Correct Me If I'm Wrong Here

Theres a million different aiming systems one always beat the other out in different way. I know a guy who uses a new aiming system every day:) and it changes a lot day to day.

Correct me if I’m wrong here. I say that no matter what way you aim or system you use to pocket balls you still have to be able the hit something about the size of the ball on a ballpoint pen from 6 to 9 foot away or it isn’t going in the pocket. This is why if you take most players that miss 7 and 8 foot cut shots 50% of the time and then teach them an aiming system ONLY, they are still going to miss about 50% of the time. Forget about 1,2, and 3 foot shots, “D” players can make them a good percentage of the time. Show me how you can make long shots unedited with an aiming system close to 100% of the time and I’ll say you have something. Johnnyt

You play on a barbox. There is no such thing as a long shot on a barbox.

Yes, you have to stroke straight... thats obvious. I don't really know what the point of these threads are. If you are happy with the way you aim... cool. Keep doing it.

Maybe it's your responses that are pointless. Just sayin'. :)

Johnny,
I can't speak for everyone but I know for a fact, in one session, that I taught one shot using CTE/Pro One to one student (C+ player) that he continuously misses using "feel" aiming. Normally he would miss the shot 7 out of ten times. Now he makes it 7 out of ten times. object ball is three feet from pocket and cue ball is 3 feet from the object ball but don't know if that qualifies as a "long shot".

He's not shooting close to 100% on this one shot using CTE/Pro One but he is ecstatic about the improvement.

Some people have shots that they just can't "see". If an aiming system helps them to "see" a shot better, what's the harm?

I don't have any problem with anyone not using an aiming system. In fact, I'm thrilled that some people don't use an aiming system and they're happy with their level of play. Why is it that some people constantly find fault with those who use an aiming system? I just don't get it.

So it's OK for you to start threads on how you aim and post videos of your aiming system but I'm not too? You guys kill me. Johnnyt

And you guys kill me! You can post whatever you want but what are you trying to prove? Sure. Go ahead, post a video of how you aim. I wanna see it how much better you aim. Don't even try to pocket the ball, just aim.

I don't think we, or anyone else for that matter, are compelled to prove anything. Especially to you. If you haven't got anything constructive to say regarding this matter, don't say anything at all. Simple, really. :)

The machine makes the balls using an aiming system. If a machine built by men/women can use a system to make balls on a pool table, why wouldn't you believe that a man or woman could also use a system to pocket balls on a pool table?

Because we have flexible muscles and movable joints. If our bodies could remain as stiff and non-flexible/unmoving as the materials used in making the machine were, and somebody "wheeled" us over into the correct position and lined us up, we would rarely miss a shot. I say rarely because given enough chances, even a machine is going to misfire occasionally.

(Dang it! I opened this thread expecting one thing, and it turns out to be yet another aiming system thread -- curse you for your ambiguous thread titles, JohnnyT! :p )

Joey:

Obviously your outlook on aiming systems has changed since you've hopped aboard the CTE/Pro-1 train car, but I'm sure when you wrote the above, you were biting your tongue as you were typing it. For you *know* it's not the aiming system that got folks up in arms, but the salesmanship/marketing (read: exuberant and overblown claims) over the years that did.

It goes something like this (an impromptu timeline example):

"Stop playing as or with the bangers. CTE is what 'all' the pros use. It is the only aiming system that matters. Learn it, use it, or get beaten by someone using it." (assembled from direct statements by Hal)
"The solution to that shot is this <...explains CTE align & pivot procedure...>. Shoot. Now offer the 8 to Shane."
"Imagine what a player of your caliber, who doesn't use CTE, would be like 'with' CTE. Bustamante-speed!"

[...]
[...then as these overblown claims start getting called out and challenged, the salesmanship/marketing message starts to soften a bit...]
[...]

"I teach all my students CTE, because they can replicate it faster than trying to view a ghostball or CP-to-CP. They start making shots almost immediately, and beat their student counterparts that only know ghostball/CP-to-CP."
"Just the other day I showed my Chinese student CTE, and she was able to finally consistently make a couple shots she was traditionally having problems with. Now she consistently runs 8-and-out on me in One Pocket."

[...]
[...further softening of the overblown claims, and now challenges back from the CTE crowd start to emerge as to whether the overblown claims were "ever" made...]
[...]

[...]
[...further softening, and the challenges back about the existence of overblown claims are getting stronger...]
[...]

And now today, CTE enthusiasts/supporters/advocates/zealots sternly hold fast that "overblown" claims were never made. "I have no idea what you're talking about -- I never saw claims like that." "I never said that." "Show me where that was said." Etc. Either very short memories, or else a case of "the devil convincing everyone he didn't exist."

I never liked the bickering and mockery that seems bolted to the hip of aiming system threads, but I gotta tell ya, all parties are guilty in this. Including you, Joey. I know you remember events along the timeline I describe above, but you might be guilty of a little, umm... "see no evil, hear no evil" here. ;)

And for the record, *I* don't have a problem with aiming systems. I've always said, whatever helps further your game, that's what you need to do. I *do* have a problem with overblown / broad-swath brush sales pitches & claims, though, and that's when I'd jump-in in the past.

-Sean <-- dipping hand backwards into the soup of time, to bring forward a handful reminder to the aiming system advocates why the skepticism/resistance exists in the first place, and why it continues...
