Another cue builder buddy of mine just bought out a a old time cue builder in my area and has ask me to help find out if their is any way to tell if the linen is Cortland Irish linen by just the spool? i guess their is no label on it i haven't seen it yet but i do not know if seeing it will help me help him determine if it is or isn't Cortland Irish linen. If anyone has pictures of spools or other ideas please let me know. I will try to get pictures of it and post them soon.

Thanks
Kyle

PS: The other cue builder cant get on AZ any ideas on that? i have posted for him in the main forum about getting AZ to work on his computer but with no luck getting him back on AZ. The site wont even pull up.

Mason, I have also heard of different colors of Courtland, however, to date I kinda think it may be a Urban Legend. To my knowledge the only color produced was White / Green Speck. The only kind I have in stock is Courtland #9, however what I have is not for sale.

i had a Tad with Cortland once and it did feel good.it was Green/White also.i agree with you as far as i can tell the different colors may be a myth.

I believe there were a couple of colors of Cortland. I believe that the white and green spec was the most prevalent however. I just remember back in the fifties when bait casting rods and reels ruled, Cortland was the line that most used and I'm almost sure it also came in white with brown spec also.

We had a bunch of those old baitcasters that were spooled with It, and once belonged to my grandfather, and one of the older ones had white with either black or brown specs. The rest of them were white green specs, but seems like I've seen it in white before too, although That one could have been some other type of line, because I don't think the weave was as fine as the cortland was. All I know was It was old too, and came on the same reels from that era.

There is solid black Cortland #9, I was told this by one of the TOP Top cue makers yesterday. Penn is a bit better if you can find any of that. I wish I could say who told me, but I cant. Lets say his basic 4 pt cue is about $5,000. so forget who told me trust me on this, also the spool on all Cortland is 100% aluminum, not aluminum ends with a cardboard spool in the middle. I had a friend here who makes about 19 cues a year get robbed on some Cortland he paid a buck a foot I think, but the the rest of the post is 100% accurate.

i'm not a cue maker, i couldnt change a tip, but I do have a extensive collection of 30-40 years old cues and have been around cue making for over 20 years. nice to meet everyone in this forum.

Hi Dick,
your correct, when I was 10 years old, I was building fishing rods, the only two colors, I used, or knew of, was white/green, and white/brown.
Of course this was 1951..The linen was about .010 dia..
