I have some cash and have decide to take a Barnhart or a Josey. Right now i play with my Olney and it hit so good, But i also have a BCM and i like the balance feel of my BCM. So acctualy i looking for a BCM Balance feel and an Olney hit feel. I read many thread about how good a Banrhart or a Josey cue. By the way, I'm Looking for a Plainjane with wrap. I know the Barnhart will cost me around 575$-625$ for 1 shaft, but i don't know how Keith will cost me a PJ cue. Can anyone give me some advise? can someone tell me how Keith gonna cost me a PJ Josey with wrap. Thanks anyway. i will appreciate all advise.
\PS : I live in Indonesia, so my english is not good. sorry. i hope there is no misunderstanding.

i hear josey's are a little thicker in the handle area so you have to be ready to adjust to that. sounds small but it's pretty major imo. from what i hear you can't go wrong with either builder.

i just ordered another BCM so i'm probably not the right guy to ask. since you're looking to get another cue anyway you could always throw in 1 or both of your cues in with the deal to get a josey or barnhart. i've seen some pretty sick barnharts on here. one guy had one that was like 20 points!!!!! sickest cue ever!

Josey's hit great, if you want it a certain way Kieth will make it that way.
Andy Gilbert's Jump play is as good as it gets, IMO

You can't go wrong with either one. They both make great cues and are great guys to deal with.

thanks all for the comment,

I know Josey hit is stiff hit, maybe like an olney, because i see a thread about josey. but what about barnhart? how barnhart play or hit can anyone tell me?

and what do you all suggest me, buy a sneaky josey to find out what i like or just order to PJ one?. thanks

The Barnharts I've hit with were quite stiff. I think if you like this kind of hit, you'll be satisfied. I've been impressed with the ones I've hit with.

I have small hands and don't feel any significant diameter difference with my Josey's... Maybe it's just me, or the fact that they are wrapless.

Keith is probably also in the same price range for a basic cue with 1 shaft, but it all depends on wood choice, ring work, type of wrap, etc. Wrapless are usually more expensive. Ask him to be sure though. He might even have some finished cues available.

I have not played with a Barnhart, but I would describe my Josey player (ebony with amboyna burl handle and inlays) as:

- amazing balance, the cue wants to remain in playing position as soon as you grab it (no weight bolt).
- nice hit, stiff when playing medium/hard but lots of touch and control when playing soft. Pleasant resonance and timbre.
- comfortable taper, easy to control spin and deflection is low for a solid maple shaft (not a LD shaft per se) despite he uses a stronger taper than many other cues.

To be fair, Barnhart cues that I have seen here are all pretty good looking ;)

to answer your questions:

bcm balance: find out the balance pt on your bcm and state the balance pt when you make your cue, then it will be to your liking ;)

olney hit: what is the forearm wood of your olney, and decribe the hit to either maker? forearm wood (ebony vs bem vs purpleheart vs bocote vs coco, assuming uncored),joint type, joint pin (ivory vs ss vs phenolic, 5/16-14 vs 3/8-11 vs 3/8-10) all play a role in the hit characteristic, weight and balance pt (and other factors).

ordering from Keith: I have worked with Keith before, and he is a real nice guy, i will highly recommend a cue from him. Just email him with what you want and he will get you a quote. cant speak for Cory but i heard he is also a fine gentleman.

barnhart hit: very generally speaking, stiffest of the 4 cues you mentioned (barnart, josey, olney, bcm). again, very generally speaking, you are right, closest hit to Olney is Josey, among the 4 cues you have mentioned.

buy 2nd hand josey sneaky or order new pj: depends on your budget.. if you have enough budget why not order a new one? it will be more likely to suit your needs if you are sure of what you want and specify your needs to the cuemaker clearly.

Josey butt diameter: I also do not think standard Joseys have thicker butts?

one more thing to note: do try and find out what shaft taper you want.

just my 5 cents worth, and i think your english is fine :)

Hi all thanks for the information and advise. i appreciate all of you.

i want to ask what is the meaning of shaft taper and what is the important about it. Sorry, i'm a beegginer in pool world LOL.
About a balance point, i really think my olney and my BCM have a similar balance point. But i feel my BCM is more balance, when i hot a cueball near the rail, i hit with my BCM more confidence than my Olney. But from the hit, i really like my Olney hit, i can make spin, draw, follow with less effort, it's seem to me that this cue have alot of power and unfortuneatly i can not make it with my BCM. For the information ihave two Olney, 1 BEM PJ and 1 Curly Maple PJ. My BCM is Goncalo ALves PJ.

Oh, by the way. Can anyone tell me what is keith Josy favoirite wood or Cory Barnhart favourite wood. thanks a lot.

Barnhart/josey eather is a good choice...................

I've owned both and I liked the Barnhart better. The taper on the shafts of the Barnhart I have are quite a bit thicker on it than the Josey. But you'll be very pleased with either choice you make because both make a fine cue.

can anyone tell me what is taper mean? i don't understand what is taper...

Thanks

Taper just means how the shaft of the cue goes from a small diameter (at the tip) to a larger diameter (at the joint).

The "Faster" it grows, the stiffer the cue plays. The more gradual (Slower) the shaft grows, the softer it hits.

Typically you get more accuracy with a stiff shaft, and more action on the cue ball with a less stiff shaft.

I have love my Josey...it does everything I ask of it. Balance point is perfect for me, and the cue just plain feel terrific in my hands. I do not know what he uses for a finish, but suffice to say, it's very protective...I have accidently whacked it several times on the metal corners of a Valley barbox, and nary a ding. His cues play pretty stiff, and if you need stiffer, just upgrade the shaft to one of his Timeless Timber lake submerged shafts...now you're talking stiff! His fit and finish is excellent...he is meticulous. Whenever possible, Keith tries to make the cue without a weight bolt, preferring to let the wood naturally weight and balance the cue. His shafts have what is called a conical taper, which is why they play as stiff as they do.

While Keith is more well known for his floating points and inlays...he can also do a very nice traditionally pointed cue as well. He does very nice PJs and makes some of the prettiest petes out there. He puts as much care into his low end cues as he does his high end.

Not sure what his personal favorite woods are, but he uses and gets some amazing pieces of both bocote and cocobolo...and makes a lot of cues from these. But he also uses rosewood, ebony, and more recently...tulipwood.

Both Keith and Sherri are super people to work with, and are very forthright. Their main goal is to have the customer be as happy as possible with their cue...period. I have been absolutely delighted with mine.

I would suggest you email them with your questions, and as previously stated, quite often Keith has something already ready to go in his shop. I do know that shipping internationally is no problem with them, as long as there is no ivory involved...but seeing as many of his inlays are of natural exotics and maples, that should not be a problem for you.

I cannot speak as to Corey's cues, but he has quite a following.

Here is my Josey:

Thank you Lisa, your cue and your information about josey cue is a reason why i so admire josey cue. Your cue is so elegan .....that green ring and flower ring is just amazing.
And Joe (Bamacues) pix for a barnhart is the reason why i admire a barnhart cue.

Thanks all for the knowledge, i hope many member gonna give me some other advise and another point of view about josey or barnhart..

Bumpp....

Just another Josey fan weighing in...mine has 4 traditional points...

Never have played with barnhart, so cannot give an opinion. Lisa's Josey description serves me well...:)

Sounds like you just want a new cue. If you want one that is a cross between the bcm and onley, then I'd have one of those two work with you to get that cue instead of changing makers.

Between the two you have picked, either makes good cues.

Really being comfortable with a cue is just a matter of playing with it, not switching back and forth. Learning how to use the instrument you have will probably improve your game more than searching for a magic wand.

Well said! It's not good for the cue makers, but find a good cue and stick with it is really the key.
None are a magic wand on their own, but can become one in the hands of a skilled and practiced player...
