Cost of Tip Replacement

In my area most makers charge 15bux for a Triangle/LePro/Elk . Premium layered tips are generally the tip price plus the labor so say around 40-45ish.
They always come back after the hookers and blow run out.
(Yes, that's how I celebrate his return)

Remember this conversation the next time a 'why can't pool get sponsors?' thread is posted. Pool players treat nickels like manhole covers.
Yeah, anymore it’s hard to get to anyone with professional skills to do anything for less than $20 or more, even if it takes them 5 minutes or less.

Obviously, if I bring a load of house cues in for my tip man to re-tip, he’s going to give me a far better labor price per cue to install Le Pro tips than the labor price he’s going to charge someone bringing in a high $ shaft to retip with an expensive tip.

You’ve got to remember he’s assuming some level of risk if he does (for some unexpected reason) damage the shaft or the tip during the process.

I just had two tips installed last wednesday on the nicest portable lathe setup I've ever seen, including shaft / ferrule clean and light sand for $60. One was a Samsara break tip and the other was a G2 soft done with a slight inward taper as I don't like any tip overhang on the ferrule sight line even if the tip mushrooms a bit. If I bought the tips separately before shipping it would have been $38. $22 for what was done is very reasonable to me. Done by Dave Lauer in the Seattle, WA area.

Yes, the Kamui tip is way more expensive than Triangle or Lepro.
He was just questioning why the labor is more, and so was I, he just beat me to the punch. I still say that is BS. It cuts the same on the lathe and requires no special tools so labor should be the same.

If he stocks Kamui tips and does not put a mark-up on them, how is he going to make money off them ?

Oh yes, I agree with you, the labor should be the same regardless of the tip. I thought he was asking about the whole procedure including tip. Kamui for example is about $22 to $25 apiece, whereas Le Pro and Triangle are about one dollar or slightly more.

All the best,
WW

Ever had back-to-back cancer diagnosis followed by surgery and chemo????? You'd wish you were a hooker ON blow. Don't know how to take your response but i really don't give a airborne copulation either way.
I thought I was celebrating your return.

Glad you checked in and can do so, damn!

Cost of the tip should be factored into the whole replacement if it comes from the repair guy. Don't expect a Kamui installed for $25.00. That's the cost of the tip in the first place. I would expect something like $40 or so. I don't care, as I do my own tips, but the cue repair guy has to make some profit to survive, otherwise no cue repair.

All the best,
WW

I don't mind paying as long as the guy has the lathe and when done have the shaft cleaned and can clean/seal the linen wrap
We had a couple traveling cue guys that come to the events with their equipment and for the convenience it was well worth it.

This one is easy, if the service is not worth it to you, don’t buy it!

If a customer brings me his own tip I charge $25 with the understanding that if anything tip related goes wrong(my fault or not), I’ll put on his choice of ultraskin as a replacement. If that’s not agreeable I refuse the job. I haven’t lost a customers tip yet but I’m not losing $$ on it either.

Sounds like a reasonable way to protect yourself.

I don’t think you understood me. I have no problem with the markup, and extra cost in materials, but if an install process is the same between a layered and a Triangle tip then I would think the labor charges should be the same. Is a layered tip more challenging to install? Does it take more time? Does it require a different type of glue?
