Costa Rica pool leagues

I've been there a couple times and never seen a pool table ... I would also be interested in hearing about the scene. Good luck to us, primarily you!

I've seen a pool table. In a beachfront bar in Jaco. Poor lighting, poorer cloth, and deplorable cues. I don't know what sort of pool scene is down there. Would it have to be a league? Would you be satisfied with your own table?

Costs Rica has become very very pricy, then you missed the opportunity to retire there before it was discovered.

My oldest cousin explored retiring there 7 years ago. His take was place was pricy, out of budget.

My question is why not explore places in USA that a good for retirement. Plus less chance of loosing everything if government is ousted by military .

Again, WTF???????????? Costa Rica's gov't is very stable. By FAR the most in latin america. I know a retired vet that moved there 20yrs ago and he freakin loves it. Housing is half of what it is here.

Well when you say half, compared to NY City?

Yes I know it is stable government, but it is still not USA.

Told my cousin to look at USA price friendly places, before leaving USA.

He tried Panama, and two other places in South America.

He is back in USA, after 6 years out of the best place.

My wife wants us to retire to Costa Rica. My primary interest is playing pool. Any one know of any leagues there?
Medellin Colombia is a nice place to retire. Probably not as many Americans but the people are great, cycling is great. Masters Billiards is a fantastic place for 3C billiards, the owner is great as are the players I met. I’d love to retire there.

My Cousin tried that two years, it was the last place he tried.

Healthcare is not as good as in USA, except maybe Brazil & Argentina.

To get away from the left wing nut jobs?
That may be a reason but this is a big country. If you can't find a good fit here you won't find it by running away. There are so many different places to live here and just a reasonable drive to anything you want from anywhere. I thought I wanted to live somewhere else. When I retired the first time I was around 45. Young and healthy enough (Not an old man on my last legs), to do anything I wanted.

We lived in Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, France,(hate that place, got arrested for gambling on pool), and visited many places for months at a time. Learned that there is no place like home. My brother-in-law lived in Mexico as well as the US. He was worth millions and he became sick and died due to the bad health care.

If you do go to one of those places you better get used to what they have there because it cost a fortune to get anything American. In Scotland we used to shop in a market the carried American items. I jar of peanut butter would be around $12.00 American dollars. In fact shopping in general is terrible. Most supermarkets have no variety at all.

Want soup, there may be like 4 kinds. Want a bag of chips, most places have two kinds and one brand. Regular and Barb-Que, that for some reason is very popular in Europe. I live in an area much of the time that is a foreign tourist destination. I see it every time in the super market. Foreign tourists running around pointing at everything like they are in Disney World. They can't believe all the different food, shelves full of it.

The OP talking about his wife, unless they has a ton of money and can pick and choose how to live, they will hate it in no time especially the wife.
TV may or may not work. It is common for the electric to fail. Not drinking the water is not a joke. you may spend more on bottled water there then you spend here on gas for your car. You better like where you are because it can be difficult as well as hazardous to travel. If she wants to retire and sit in a cheap home or rental and wait out the rest of her life more power to her. Retirement is supposed to be enjoyable, doing all the things you never had the time for. Living in a half backwards foreign country because you think it cheap is the wrong reason. Figure out how to enjoy your life right here in the good old USA.

The interesting thing about this country is its size. I live in Florida. Your first impression of Florida would be what you see on TV. It is mostly wrong. I can drive for hours and see vast spaces and dozens of towns you have never heard of. not everyone lives on the coast or South Beach. Look up Mount Dora for example. We have great weather, no state income tax and there are more then a few pool rooms around Florida and tournaments..

Road systems can be crazy in other countries. You look at a map and to get from one place to another can be like a maze. We are used to driving where ever we want directly. Not 50 miles out of the way to make a connection to get where you want to go.

"How are the roads in Costa Rica"?

The roads in Costa Rica are much different than in most parts of the United States, Canada and European countries. The standards are much lower with few road signs, guardrails, shoulders and no street lights (only in populated areas). Bridges are often only one lane and can come up without warning. The majority of roads are two lanes and in many cases, wind through the mountains. The mountains can become foggy at night, so between the lack of street lights, no guard rails and fog, it is not advised to drive at night.

Trucks are a constant nuisance that clog the roads of Costa Rica. Many would not pass safety inspections in North America. Between the poor road conditions and trucks that in many cases are only capable of going up to 40 km per hour, the main roads can become congested.
There is usually a single paved road that leads to most destinations (with the exceptions of Monteverde, Tortuguero and the Osa Peninsula). Rural roads are often unpaved. You will not be able to drive to Tortuguero or Drake Bay as they can only be accessed by boat or plane.
If you do choose a rental car, we recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle equipped with both a GPS system and a good map. GPS will lead the way, but landslides and road construction are common. In which case, you can use your map to find another way.
We recommend going with private or shared transfers or a combination of both for your first vacation to Costa Rica. You can then see the road conditions and make an informed decision for your next trip.

My final comment, you are no longer in the US and not protected by US law. You could find yourself in a prison over a traffic accident.

Yes a lot of America has been nurfed and made ‘safe’ and comfortable for all. Our homeless folks have it better than a lot of people in the world. It’s a shock when you first get out into the other real world.

It’s a beautiful and dangerous place by and large. You have to decide between comfort and freedom or whatever else it is you’re looking for. Or decide between easy access to pool tables or making the old lady smile

Costa Rics has more pool than billiards. They have many pool halls there and billiard tables in only 2 or 3 places. Most leagues are in the san jose area so if you live of town there are few teams. The rules for 8 ball are much different than here. They play very good and the tables are terrible.

I was in CR a couple years ago for vacation and found a pool hall. Here is a thread I made at the time about my experience there:
