Could Earl ever win a "mum" match?

How about this?

Earl and whomever, play on whatever table Earl wants, by whatever rules Earl wants wherever he wants and first person to speak loses the match.

3/4 of Earl's game is talking and sharking, trying to get his opponent out of their game so he can win. I have seen it in almost every one of Earl's matches since the beginning of time....

What ever happened to winning by skill alone? (and of course, rolls thrown in here and there)

When I play, I sit there if I am not shooting and I don't talk smack when I am shooting or if things are not going my way... is it that hard?
 
That is just silly conjecture, Mon.

How did you determine 3/4?

You know if he talks he loses means he can't win.

I am exaggerating a little trying to make a point...... hmmmmm..

But you get the idea.

The rules would be simple: if either player speaks before the match is over, they lose. It applies to both parties.
 
Do we really need another thread about Earl's rather unorthodox behavior?

I don't like him, on both professional and personal levels. However, I've played and gambled enough in my life to come across characters of this sort in just about any pool hall I've ever walked into. If you cannot get around playing people who talk trash while you shoot, then don't play them. If you cannot get around watching people who acts rude while you shoot, then don't watch them play. I admit he certainly has an odd behavior, but he also has the talent to back out those actions (most of the times IMO). There are people who like to use excuses to lose games. Oh blah blah blah, I didn't lose this and that game because I played bad kind of excuse.

Let him be. He's not going to change.

If everyone else was not allowed to peep a word (especially those watching) I think his game would be even stronger. I saw Earl sit quitely like a gentleman at the Pro events I worked at in the 80's and early 90's. And no one today would want to play the Earl from then. He was beating everyone. When they started that Mosconi Cup and people were yelling at him from the stands and such, he started yelling back and the rest is history.

I actually agree with that statement. Earl will never learn to come back playing his best after he'd convinced himself the whole world is against him.

Give SVB and the other pro's a little respect. I can't believe Earl's antics from Friday bothered svb one bit, but only svb can answer that for sure. These guys are not only pros, but world class hustlers, that I can't believe they can still be sharked for heavens sake.

Heck, there were no antics on Sat or Sun, and svb could not do anything to stop Earl. I'm sure it might mess with someobody's game, but doubt it is gonna mess with svb or archers at all. They are both just too strong and gotta think this ain't nothing to them......

How about each player has a soundproof booth they must be in while not shooting, neither can exit their booth until the other has entered?

No live audience either, only a ref present.

Lol...Instead of a swear jar maybe have a shark jar that you fill with $100 bills every time you say something instead of losing the match. I want to see one of the pros scheduled to play him show up with arm/leg/ass weights and earmuffs and look at Earl and say something clever...

Not only could he but he would win them convincingly. I have had people try to impose this on me in the past and it has completely backfired on them as having to stay mum increases my focus on the game.

Earl runs out racks while complaining on every ball. Imagine what he could do if he was only focused on the game.

John Schmidt said he has never seen anything like a guy who has a ten game lead and playing great who looks like you just ran over his cat after every rack.

A quiet Earl would be twice as deadly. IMO

I agree with you totally. I play a friend who has a tendency to mumble things about the table, the cloth, the rails etc, etc and it distracts you. He bought his wife along a few weeks back and he was quiet and I burned him up. There is something to mouth running that gets in an opponents game, it draws the attention even if it doesnt make one mad. Very nice case by the way!!! My case would like to be your case when it grows up!

But that's the question, JB. Could Earl be focused only on the game or would part of his brain be occupied with making sure nothing comes out of his mouth, ultimately reducing his focus at the table? Don't know the answer to that.
