Could Joe Tucker's Aiming Workout be counterproductive for a beginner (D player)? I know in his video he says this workout is for advanced players but I wanted to try his aiming system.

I've been working on it for the past 3 days and I've only finished up to #7 contact point and I already have 202 misses. I'm just wondering if missing over and over might be engraving bad habits and in turn outweigh the benefits of practicing his aiming system. What are your thoughts on this?

Stroke is the first thing you need...

with a good stroke your knowledge of the game is powerful and useful

but I know first hand that without a stroke everything else you know and learn about the game is nearly useless..

aiming systems are completely useless..if you cannot deliver the ball along that aim line..

lessons on good stroking technique should be your first order of business

good luck

I don't think my stroke is too bad. I haven't had private lessons but I've read several of Capelle's books and I purchased Randy G's and Scott Lee's video and I've built my stroke around that information.

I'm pretty successful with long stopshot drills and following the objectball trying to scratch (I don't always scratch but when I don't I'm off by very little) and drawing straight back. I feel my biggest problem is visualizing the front of the cue ball and where its going to contact exactly on the Object ball.

But that's just how I 'feel'... I could be totally wrong.

get some video of yourself shooting.. directly from the side focused on your stroking arm not the balls...

then some video from directly behind yourself... post it in the ask the instructor forum..

Scott, Randy and many others will be happy to diagnose your stroke..

just watching the video of yourself shooting is one of the most powerful things you can do to improve..

I'll even go as far as saying that the single most important invention for improving pool ability in the past 50 years... is the invention of the video camera..

Where are you at skill-wise? Joe seems like a reputable instructor and I've used training tools of his to good effect. If he says it's for advanced players, it probably is.

It looks like this is the workout?

If so, that's a bit tough at your level. There are shots there that even a B player may sweat. I would get whatever he offers for beginners. Both shooting straight enough to make the ball, and knowing exactly where to aim... will probably need some more practice from you.

Drills are all and nothing!
If you re doing drills you have to do them right! And of course first you need to have good fundamentals at all. That s the main reason it s great to work *first* with a good/qualified instructor. He will show you what you have to work on and important: HOW you can work on it on yourself!
Just doing drills with already *burned in* bad habits can t be the key to good pool...

I would e-mail Joe and ask him if at your level he thinks the aiming system will help you. He will be honest with you if your honest with him. His workout for the aiming system is brutal but it has helped me get to the next level in shot making. I have no fear of long straight in or long cut shots when they come up. Of course you need a straight stroke to pocket balls however you aim. You do need a pretty good smooth stroke for a lot of Joe's drills. Good luck to you. Johnnyt
