counterfake antique vintage items help

Solartje

the Brunswick BUG bit me
Silver Member
Hi all,

i was wondering this myself, but i'm sure the info could be very usefull for several other persons. I'm collecting vintage antique billiard related accesoires. Some are cheap , some are expensive.

i was wondering, what are the known counterfake items that are for sale on ebay, forums etc, and how to recognice them?

some that i know off that are copied:

- Brunswick weight thing to hold chalk (cast iron thing with 2 strings)
- Brunswuck table nameplates.
- ...

are there cueball racks, cue's, triangles, etc... that are fake and that i need to be aware off before buying?

any link to a page with info on this?

I agree the Brunswick chalk weights have been reproduced, and the Brunswick name plates, you might also add to your list some paper items--
The Brunswick Billiard Master Large Wall Graphics, and some of the old photos of pool halls. The respectiable sellers will indicate they are copies, you can also look under their rating score to see if they have sold something as original and if is a fake they will leave negative feedback if the dealer did not take it back--
or you can spend a lot of time comparing items of the past with current auctions--

How Kansas City, Lazy Eagle Eye?
So the collection bug bite you Solartje LOL!!!
Solartje, Lazy Eagle Eye is very knowledge, and can be trust.

Bob you can't imagine!!! DAMN FORUMS!!!... it bite me when i bought my first ivory ball pack. i was shocked by the price of them when someone mentioned them on the forum, so i did some googling and i had found a local sell that had one for sale WAY less then the usual price. I thought i could make a BIG profit, but never sold it. it was just TOO nice. since then i think ive spend over 5k in 6 months on antiques. usually i buy to sell it with a profit, and the profit is used to pay for my own collection.

right now i have:

a one of a kind hand carved wooden box with ivory balls (rarest piece and never ever seen a box like this)
chalk retracters, triangles, chalkholders etc..
a 1900's manual tenon cutter (probably my favorit piece)
some of the first brunswick Trade tokens (with the revers monarch. first i wanted to collect them all, but after i bought a book on tokens, they seem be over 1000+ known with prices from 50 -500$. so i'm narowing it down to the oldest (J.W. BBC pre 1884 and i'll try to find one of each design type )
victorian cueracks (just love them. trying to find one of each amount (3 cues, 4cues, etc..)
tiptools from pre 1900
a french marquetry cue from 1790-1800's. (ill probably sell but i just want to keep it to admire it for the moment :D)

i searched for every piece the patent or published information online and had it printed and framed. can't wait to build my new house so i can give then a nice place. my own little museum :D

Lazy eagle eye:
any website or list with items you have for sale? maybe something interesting for me or maybe we could even trade :D i still have some items on my list that maybe you have for sale.

How about those carved iron? corners that looks like a hand. i see LOADS of them selling. are they fake too? any antique cue's that haven counterfaked?

Solartje, you mention collecting different chalk holders, does this mean you also correct different type of old chalks?

I just started collecting some months ago. i'm really new to this. It was one of the idea's, but i havent started it yet. can't collect EVERYTHING. I'm not sure if i ever will start collecting them, but its an option as they are affordable and dont take up much space (wich is a requirement my wife gave me :D). right now i'm focusing on my accesoire collection (triangles, chalkholders, brushes, kelly bottles, cue maintenance items etc...) and my token collection.

maybe later :D

You probably have the cue that was stolen from raytown rec not that long ago with the metal tag from kling's. you should bring it there and see if it is the stolen one and if so you should return it to Don B. I will let him know you probably have his cue.

The fakest billiard item that comes to mind is the plastic/celluloid ivory colored coin bank that has brunswick balke on it- all the collectors i know think it is a fake item. The guy selling them periodically is always selling items with brunswick on them but I cannot tell his name. If you see the bbc/brunswick name on a wierd item then you will know who the seller is. you are right, i think the guy on ebay is selling fake bbc chalk weights and putting them on new tweeten pulleys/strings/holders. I don't believe the nickel plated ones are real either- i think those were made by people who read that description in the catalogs and went out and plated their cast iron shields. my nickel plated one is ancient with sharp edges on the lettering and is obviously original, so i know what the fakes look like- they look like you took the fake iron one and nickel plated it.

say what? what cue? me? stolen?

no solartje, i was not referring to you about a cue........

my reply was to the person who put on this thread that he had found a metal-tagged cue from Kling and Allen pool room. An identical one was recently stolen from the owner. Cues from this pool hall are already rare but I have seen only one with the metal tag. it was sold on ebay. it might have been the stolen one. I am not accusing anyone. Anything I have in my collection could have been stolen in the past. I am just saying that the stolen cue probably surfaced and was resold to this guy lazy. I think he should take it to Raytown Recreation and show it to the owner to see if it belongs to him. The owner is honest and would not lie about it being his if it really was not. sorry about the misunderstanding solartje. good luck collecting buddy.

Hey Solly I read the story you wrote on one of my threads on your table. It was very interesting to read about. It is funny that you post this thread I wanted to start a similar thread about pool and billiard collectibles. I have been waiting for my pool table to be completed and that is still 2 weeks away. I thought it would be cool to have people post pics of pool related collectibles. I wanted place things that I have acquired on the table for the pictures.

Another knowledgeable member here is 9ballrob. Also heavy into collecting and brokering antique billiard items.
