Crazy Efren Shot

I recently viewed a shot Efren made in competition and I have never seen it before nor do I have any idea how he managed to do it. Does anyone know? Does he use the point of the side pocket? or is this a trick with English?

He uses the point of the pocket. Ever seen someone try and bank a ball to the side pocket and it hits the point and runs down the rail to the corner? Same principle.

There's a "trick" to everything.....or is there?

It's magic of course.....that's why they call him "The Magician" ;)

Side spin is not required. Follow is needed since the cue ball needs to curve around the other corner of the side pocket if you want to go right down the rail. I first saw this played in a tournament about 1977 by Cole Dickson -- he went into the point from about a 45 degree angle and went straight along the rail to get his hit at nine ball.

One pocket players are familiar with the opposite direction, where you try to play a long bank near your side rail back to your pocket and the ball hits the side pocket and goes towards your opponent's pocket.

bob
i always thought you needed some speed to allow the ball to "bend" the point to allow it to go down the rail
a onepocket palyer i dont think would hit the bank that hard
im not an instructor
can it go at slow speed??

I may have been unclear. The shot I was talking about is: a ball is just below the side pockets on your side. The cue ball is close to your pocket. You bank that ball off the far end cushion in a "straight-back long bank" where the object ball is travelling up and down the table nearly parallel to the side rail. You use a little too much angle. The object ball hits the side rail at the side pocket and comes off the side pocket point nearer your pocket. It takes a 45-degree path off the point.

I think it's fun and worthwhile to experiment for a few minutes with hitting the points with either the cue ball (the original shot above) or an object ball (my shot).
