Crazy Idea to breathe new life back into pool

Man I tell ya, I think most everyone on here knows that I love all aspects of the billiards biz and I would want nothing more that to see something like this happen. However I think that people would not want to see a cue being made everyweek. I agree that it would be interesting to some but the audience would be too small to keep it on TV. Not trying to be negative just real. keepthe ideas coming maybe one fine day we will get something cool on TV.

Now THIS is the "reality" of it all.

Update

Ok call me crazy. I actually registered with the Discovery Channel's Producer's Portal and officially filed a submission. I will paste what I sent. Hey all they can say is No right?

"I first posted this idea on the AZ Billiards forum which is the #1 Billiard resource and it has created large interest. Every year there is a Mid west and West coast Cue Show. Centered around these dates would be a build off on America's best pool cue builders. The contest would consist of judging by fellow builders and players. The pool Cue is a thing of function and art. From the most basic to the most intricate. Names such as Richard Black, South West Cues, Richard Chudy, Sugar Tree Custom Cues, Black Boar Custom Cues, and Tim Scruggs just to name a few. Southwest Cues alone has a waiting list of up to 5 years just to get a cue made. In the 80's pool was huge and very very popular with the release of the Color Of Money film with Tom Cruise and Paul Newman. Now Twenty plus years later it is time to bring it back. Custom cues are the art and signature of the sport and is huge in Japan at the moment. Some Custom Cues can bring in upwards of 10,000 to 20,000 dollars. Using such materials as very rare woods and intricate inly sources like mother of pearl etc. The Cue maker's shop is much like that of a chopper maker's shop. So I am sure the drama would be there as well to hook the new comer. I believe this idea for a show would be refreshing to the network and to America and would inspire many young people as well as older people into the sport of Billiards and the craft of Custom Cue making. These pieces of "Functional Art" when introduced to are very beautiful and desired. I see this budget being no more than a Biker build off episode maybe even less. Our great cue makers stretch nation wide so travel would be involved. This long time trade needs a new fresh interest and I fully believe your network can not only provide it but profit from it. Thank you for you consideration and if you would like to view any examples of this incredible art form then please contact me. Thank you, Duane Stockton"

How about a single 2 hour show? Possibly a 3 or 4 hour mini-series?

i think they should also feature crazy custom tables. That would be wicked to see

I would never want to rush a cuemaker. A friend of mine who is into tattoos told me if I ever get one DON'T pay per tattoo but pay the artist by the hour!!

Build a player!Find a way to discribe what he/she sees and experiences.Heavy on technology,distances,points of contact tolerences,spin rates,rebound angles.practice regimes.Personality.

Isn't the bigger problem that really good cues don't get made in the time-frame of a reality show? I mean, yes, you can technically make a cue in a few hours if you so chose, but to get the audiences interest you need to be throwing around big numbers and obviously elaborate (and preferably celebrity related) content in the cue.

I can't see a weekly show where the only thing that happens each week is that the butt sits in a PVC pipe in the cuemaker's garage stabilizing and then maybe after a few months gets turned down a few 1000th" whilst the cuemaker does the occasional tip job, watches TV, microwaves dinner and posts flames on AZBilliards as being very compelling content. ;-)

Now I agree that a proper documentary that follows both the life of the cuemaker and the challenges of building of a particularly interesting cue, ideally for an interesting client or project, over several years would be worth watching. However that kind of thing requires a good size budget and production consistency over several years, which is hard to come by.

LOL So I woke up this morning with a crazy idea. The Discovery channel. Yep that's right the discovery channel. You know all those Biker build off shows. Same thing but with cue makers. Behind the scenes in the shop with cue builders. Kinda Miami Ink/American Chopper type of thing. HAHA I can See it now..........."Tonight on American Cue. Richard Chudy is under the gun to get his Ivory Bullet cue done in time. Can He do it?" Then people would be all over pool and cues.

Here is a link , there are other cue related links in the sidebar and after video links.

How about a "reality" show that follows the life of a road player around the country.

I'd like to see a reality show like that "Repo" show, only they barge into poolrooms and destroy all the jukeboxes with hammers and see if they can get away before the cops come. :smash:
