i want to say up front, out of the gate, that i am privlidged,honored,humble and thankfull, that i, was choosen to be one of the 150 IPT players, i really am gratfull, and know how lucky i am to be in this position, when greater players than myself, such as jeanette lee spent $8000 in 4 qualifyers, and lost, and here i am, not as good and i'm in, so i really am grateful to be experiencing this ultimate pool journey,first hand and up very close,i want to thank kevin personly this pool blessing. now with that said, i'd like to say one big thing~~~~

the IPT is spending mllions on lighting, cameras,help staff, etc, etc, the result is when seen on OLN it looks great, well filmed, and well done, but why, why oh why oh why, isn't thorston hoemann on david letterman???? i know in the past, the greatest surfer was on david letterman, and the greatest race car driver, and the so and so and the who's E- what, and what have you blah blah blah, can't the IPT take some of their weight and call letterman's producer's or whomever, and say, "look, we want this man on your show, as the last guest, we know he's not a name with the public, however, we want him on to talk about making history in the pool world, and possible shot demonstration. i know the letterman staff in a second would say "YES" so i ask this board, my fellow pool friends, why? why ? why? NOT?????? i just don't know. the goal of the ipt is to bring pool to the general public, and not the "pool nuts" (us) why preach to the chior, when you can show the rest of the world the beauty that is 8-ball? i don't get it, i really don't, i don't deserve to be on letterman, i did squat so far, it just seems to me, if the IPT falls on it's face, the real reason will be lack of universal exposure. i am pulling for mass marketing for the ipt, i know i won't make it for 2007,and that's alright, i enjoyed the trip so far,but i want the IPT to succeed,i'll find other avenues to travel down upon, but for the better health of the IPT organization, may they appear on mainstream television real soon, and may hoemann,manalo, and reyes become household words, such as tiger woods,babe ruth,and other sports heros,here is hoping the future is bright for the IPT,Bernie Friend,north carolina.
 
what is the pool player's appeal

I could be mistaken being a straight male but Thorston seems short on sex appeal. I haven't seen any sign of him being uproariously funny either. He may be, but how would Letterman know? I doubt people are contacting Letterman in great numbers asking about the IPT or it's players since few of the general public realizes it exists and fewer care. I haven't seen the IPT advertised on the network, much less in Letterman's timeslot.

What is in it for Letterman or his network?

Well, if Hohmann's on Letterman or Leno, let's hope they spell his name correctly. Just kidding, Bernie, for I agree with you 100%.

Another point worth considering is that oin KT's speech to the members of the IPT roster in Orlando, he stressed that his that IPT players will command high appearance fees somewhere down the road. If so, big time TV exposure must surely be part of the equation in making that happen.
 
Seems that KT and the IPT are doing a pretty good job at getting some people, mostly it's members, to buy into his marketing hype that he is going to make IPT players into international stars. Look, don't let anyone burst your dreams, but truly, the only things that KT is promoting is KT, the Qualifiers, Natural Cures, the IPT equiptment sales and, initially, Mike Siegal. Hopefully many different players will get a piece of the large purses, but if you're waiting for Hollywood to call, you're setting yourself up for a huge dissappointment.
 
nah, i'm not waiting for hollywood to call! and hoemann,he ain't got no big persoanlity either,but, and here is the but, letterman's people are always looking for great acheviments, weather it be this or that, my god, it could be for freakin domino records or anything, you know? that's the show that has stupid pet tricks,so why in god's name isn't the north american open champion on for only 3 mins. as a last guest type thing, like i say, i'm glad to be on this tour,but geez, it would be nice for the public at large to even know we are breathing! for god's sakes, i would guess 80% of POOL PLAYERS,yes pool players!!! don't even know the IPT exists! now that's just WRONG!!!!!

for what it is worth, I agree with you. It is imperative for the IPT to get some exposure nationally, at least. Has Thorsten been asked for an appearance or interview, even locally in Florida? Other than in a Pool room?

I never did get an answer to my other question in a previous thread, What is the William Morris agency (an advertising and management company) doing for the IPT? (since they were hired by Kevin).

I'd like to see Thomas Engert on TV saying, I ran 491 balls in Straight Pool, how many can you run?..:D ..lol)
 
The one Letterman would want on his show would be Austin Murphy, set up a table out on the street and have Biff or Rupert play him. Austin would destroy them, Dave would laugh at Biff and it would be funny, and great exposure for the IPT, Dave could then interview him.

A 14 year old playing and doing well against people twice his age in a pro sport is more interesting then a top world class pool player, heck even Earl would make a way better guest, Earl could stick his foot in his mouth and people would really want to check it out just to see what Earl does.

At this point the general population could care less about the best pool player, there has to be a story behind them or they have to be bigger then life, pool by itself will never draw an audiences like Football, Baseball, or Basketball. Tennis made a huge jump with the likes of Connors and McEnroe and there bigger then life and in your face attitudes and has slid in the last few years with the lack of any bigger then life draw.

Honestly I don't see a player right now on tour who has the personality or star power to take pool to higher level, Pool players in general lack the fire you see in other sports, or at least you don't often see it, I hope one shows up soon. The bad thing is, it's looked down on when a player celebrates after a win, or gets mad.

It's up to the IPT to create a buzz, to talk to the PR firms about getting on TV shows....I hope they are, and it will still be a an uphill battle. I have a bad feeling nobody at the IPT sent any press releases out, I hope they do for the next one. Letterman is a long shot, but a lot more can be done.

I agree Austin or maybe Jasmine might have more of a hook to get on the show, but what the IPT needs to do is hire a very good publicist. That is how you get that kind of exposure on TV and in magazines. Find a few good IPT players with a hook, either youth, character (Mc Cready) or pure talent and personality, Alex P maybe?
Then get them booked on shows etc...
Personally I think Jasmine is the best candidate, being the 1st woman to qualify, being young, being attractive she could be a publicity gold mine!
 
The IPT is too new to be established as a standard for the professional game of pool. The NBA, NFL, NHL and the WSOP are established playing platforms for their prespective game/sport. In a few years from now, if the IPT becomes the regular standard by which all pool players are deemed to be the best of the best, then maybe you will see a pool player on Letterman, with Letterman showing highlights of his winning runout and NOT having him demonstrate dog tricks/ trick shots for the audience. Professional pool needs to establish a standard in its industry. It has had attempts in the past, but all have failed. Hopefully the IPT will be around for at least a decade....

That could work. If Letterman took a liking to him or more importantly the audience did, there could be many repeat visits for no special reason.

Think how much more fun the recent king of the hill would have been had Keith been the reigning king!

I also agree with Bernie; I would think that Letterman (or any other talk show host) could ask him a few questions about how long he's been playing, how many hours a day he practices, ask him about his personal achievements (straight pool high run, world 9-ball championship, etc.), and then have him break and run out a rack of 8-ball right there on live TV. I think it'd be entertaining for viewers, and it would certainly gain some viewership among people who find pool interesting but may not have known about the IPT.

It is not nescessary for pool players to do dog tricks on the letterman show or any show for that matter. Just show actual highlights from the actual tournament and do an interview of their life in pool. The audience could care less for a demonstration. Its like having a basketball star demonstrating a free throw....
