cross threaded shaft?

I have a tiger shaft with the phenolic insert. I believe it may be cross threaded. I've shot with this shaft for a while. It will not screw on the butt now. I'm super frustrated. I've shot with these shafts, it's probably my 7th tiger shaft over the years. I'm assuming it's cross threaded because I have no other explanation. Any ideas?

My question is: If the shaft is cross threaded,can it be re tapped with another insert or is the shaft now trash?

Hard to tell from the pics, can you post a pic of the pin from the side?

To prevent that.... put the but and shaft together and turn them backwards until it clicks and then screw it together..... this aligns the threads.

But that doesn't help now.... running a tap in the shaft will most likely straighten it out. Don't over do it or it will get loose.

Hi,

I would guess that it is not cross threaded. I would think it is more likely that the shaft was cranked on to the wrong pin and was female threads were damaged.

You can easily have it repair with a new insert and retap.

In his post he says that he has used this shaft on this butt for a while so I doubt it is the wrong pin or this would have happened the first time he used the cue. You should be able to just run a tap back through it and clean up the threads unless they broke. You may have one of the first couple of threads laying down in which the tap will fix it. good luck

That's what I'm hoping.There is a cue repair guy in this area. I'm dropping it off to him tomorrow night. I've never had this happen and with me using the cue for a good bit,it just seems odd that it would do it so easily. I have a spare Tiger shaft that fits perfect,just like every other I've used.

I have watched people at the pool hall that have 2 cues in their bag with different threads. Sometimes they accidentally try to start the wrong shaft on the wrong butt and sometimes it messes up the threads in the shaft.

I could see it happening if I had more than one. It would then make sense as to how this happened so easily, but I only have one butt for all my shafts.

Modified 3/8 10 joint pin and regular tap are not a hot combo imo.
I'm assuming that phenolic insert was tapped with a regular 3/8 10 tap.

Have the insert replaced.
I suggest sending to Ryan at Muellers.

I do phenolic inserts in all my shafts and I tap them regular or modified 3/8-10. I don't feel that there is any problem....

I met a guy a couple of years ago that had a Dieckman butt and no shaft and wanted to try it out so I took one of mine and threaded it down. It got real tight just before seating which sometimes happens with a wood pin. Dumb me I grabbed another and did the same thing. Then I looked at the threads and both were broke in the middle. BUMMER. Dennis changed his pitch over the years by just 1/2 tpi. That's why it felt fine till almost down. To top it off I knew he made the change and I'm supposedly an expert in threaded products.:rotflmao1:

This is more common than some people realize, You could put your cue together a thousand times and never have a problem, but one time it can easily not sit in the thread and cross. Any wood, phenolic and even that plastic insert of Huebler, it's always best to go backwards first like Kim suggested and you'll never have this problem again. You have good people right there close to you who can repair this, no need to ship it anywhere else.
