CSI Commentary

It's funny how posters like to bash certain people but as soon as that person comes on and replies to them they start nut-hugging.

I've seen it happen with Mike Dechaine and Justin Bergman as well, and probably many other well known people in the pool industry.

That aside, I think Jay's commentary is fine, Bobby's on the other hand is atrocious.

Not sure if calling literally every shot a hanger is 1. helpful for the viewer 2. realistic (since half the time the player misses it).

Really? I thought the 7 footers were so easy nobody misses?

You guys should get together and get your stories straight.

Exactly my thoughts. I think Jay is one of the best in the business, a bit more critical than usual but that Cotton fellow is the worst - Rather hear Shuman eat a jar of peanut butter and gasp for air all match

One person in the booth is more than enough for pool. I'd rather have more cameras and music in the background. Johnnyt

There's an idea.

Rotate Billy and Jay in the booth.
Those two together, to me are the best

I find those that can't play 8 ball on a bar box always complain...
The commentary is just fine...That's a tough job for 6-8 hours without a break...

Take a shot every time Bobby says the word "hanger" and you'll be drunk very fast. Apparently, to him, everything is a hanger.

so true.

I liek commentary in matches i dont like silent matches i always have music on if no commentary BUT

cmon fellas i know jay can do much better, as I said in another thread cotton brings out the worst in whoever he commentates with

Ill be at Chinook winds open in october if fast lenny ever wants a break i dont think i could be any worse than cotton

Pretty obvious to me that most of the people commenting on this thread are not actually watching the US Bar Table, just blowing smoke out their ass. If you watch you might actually learn something! I enjoy working with Bobby. We have a good rapport and he KNOWS small table Pool. We do inject humor and I think it adds to the fun. We also make mention from time to time about past greats. The real pool fans enjoy hearing about them. Thankfully we get many compliments about our commentary, far more than the knockers on here (hello Teacherman).

Bottom line, we are doing our best to make these matches interesting.
Well said!!!! The commentators are doing a great job please stop these useless full of hate threads. Most of us myself included couldn't come close to the knowledge and humor they offer when doing a match. I appreciate the effort all them give and am very thankful to have commentators. Remember its very easy to put down someone else, but not so easy to do better than them.

I paid for the stream, I'm watching the stream and............I think you can Bobby are comedy gold!!!! How many hours could we watch Jessica, Rebecca and Susan dog balls....your commentary made it watchable. Heckling the women, discussing the need to "point" at every shot....at least it was entertaining. Keep doing what you're doing!

There's a massive difference between making matches interesting and making yourself sound like an ignorant ass like Bobby does. After watching matches from last years US Open 8&10 Ball, I will turn off the match anymore if I hear Bobby or Ken. Both of them are disrespectful to the broadcast audience.

I've almost brought myself to never participate in a CSI ran even if Ken or Bobby is going to commentate. The low level of commentary from those two gets so annoying at times I've almost raged and broken shit at home. If Bobby had half the skill his mouth did he would be the best player ever. Please Jay, don't get all uptight because you're with bad commentators. Explain to them that what they're doing is pissing off the viewing public. If they won't budge on their current style, then you should show enough respect for yourself and what you've done and not be in the booth with them. Jay you know how to talk to the masses, they don't and never will.

I must be in the minority as I live Bobby as a commentator.

How about all the complainers do a demo so we can critique them.

I have to admit that I didn't buy the stream (not BB fan) but I have heard Jay and Cotton more than enough times to know they do a great job.

Both really know the game and absolutely will tell the fans what they think. Jay's, "what was that" and "he's good" are a perfect understated method. Couple that to Cotton's stories of "did you know this guy" are perfect for this type of thing.

Now bring back the adult tables and I'm buying all of it (I couldn't help myself).

not from me you wont.......bet your life on that brother

I want you all to know I take this job very seriously. I study the best broadcasters to see how they do what they do. I love Johnny Miller with Golf and John McEnroe with Tennis. They never hesitate to call it just like they see it and they are both keen analysts of their respective games. There are actually quite a few commentators on these major sports that I consider inferior. They fail to report on what is happening right in front of them, falling back on cliches like "she needs to send a message" or "he can show up big right now".

I do appreciate the positive criticism and I am listening. I have my good days and some not so good (like a pool player) and I can usually tell the difference. I do enjoy working with my good friend Bobby LeBlanc. Yes there is more humor at times but that can help break up a long dull match. When we have two good players it's back to business. There are more liberties on a live stream than a network show and I'm well aware of the differences, and I do my best to adapt to each. Thanks again for watching. The Eight Ball should he exciting. We have a larger field, more prize money and it's the premier game on small tables.

Spoken like a pro.
It must be very difficult to commentate on a match that isn't going very well....
....must feel like trying to run out on a trap table when it's humid.
...and sometimes humor is the best way to get the job done.

I think even I could do a reasonable job on Earl's eleven racks.....
...but when getting through a rack needs five innings apiece....whaddiya gonna do?

I remember an ACCU tape from the eighties, a young Johnny Archer playing Jimmy
Fusco....they were having a bad match....hill-hill with a lot of misses...
Jimmy finally makes a good shot on the seven....the eight is about four inches from the corner..
...whitey ends up beside it....Billy I says "I think he's got a shot to the other corner."
...Danny D says "Yes, he has, but personally, I'd rather play shape for the hole it's hanging over."

I told Pat Fleming that the commentating made that match a pleasure.....
...almost anybody can do a decent job on a good match.

pt....would make a good common tater

I'm embarrassed watching the Thorpe-Klatt 9-ball match. Apparently they ordered a pizza and the delivery guy couldn't find them. So they spent as much time talking about that as the match. They didn't see - or didn't comment on - important shots because they were going on about the pizza.

And does anyone know what happened between Cotton and Bergman. I know Berg had a Facebook post calling out the commentators because people told him they were criticizing him. But Cotton referred to something else that happened, I think, maybe after the match, where Cotton got angry at Bergman. COTTON got angry?

Bring back Cornerman!

I don't understand why people don't just mute the commentary.

Can I just assume that everyone who complains about commentary isn't a sports fan? When I watch sports, I don't really listen to the commentary. Well, sure I do, but it certainly doesn't tell me anything. But, I still listen to the commentary. As an athlete and a sports fan, I get the reason for commentary. I get why Bud Collins and McEnroe are there. I get why Chris Behrman is there. I get why Marv Albert is there. I get why whoever is commentating on track and field is there. I get why the women's beach volleyball commentator is there.

Personally, I love listening to Cotton. I definitely enjoy Jay. If I don't like the commentary by whoever is talking at whatever event, I just don't listen. That's no different than any other sport. Other sports commentators certainly are t there to teach us anything.

Freddie <~~~ loves women's beach volleyball

I'd mute most of them but watching pool without the sound of the balls always seems a little strange to me.
The older Accu-stats stuff was the best of course but it's slipped some in recent times. Everything else (with a few exceptions) ranges from mediocre to downright atrocious. I often wonder what screen they're watching because their comments seldom relate well to what I'm seeing on mine.
To commentate effectively on pro level pool they need a thorough understanding of the subtleties of the game. A lot of the commentators are B level or below and just don't possess the knowledge required.

Jay is the lead commentator, Bobby is the color commentator, just like a 2 man booth in baseball. Sometimes Bobby can be a little too colorful for some. I personally enjoy his stories and his folksy demeanor. That's what made him successful in the 80's when he robbed you.
