CSI Questionable use of the "US Open" name?

"Own".

How?

And what do these chaps have to say on the matter?

http://www.usopen.org/

CSI owns a trademark on "us open 10 ball", "us open 8 ball" and "us open one pocket" along with the various "us bar table championships" etc.

I personally think that's silly as none of these names really mean sh!t. The best tournament, in pool, is the one that pays out the most. The name has proven to not even matter. If I added 500k and free entry to a tournament I wanted to call "the big ass 9ball championship of Southern New Jersey" and had it the same weekend as the US Open 9ball Championship, where do you think the players would go?

Hey Mark, It's your event, your added money and you're doing the work, call it what ever you damned well please. Enjoy

"Stewardship” is a nice ancient sounding word.

Generally speaking, "good stewardship" or "being a good steward" means the responsible oversight and protection of an asset worth taking care of and preserving. It’s about looking beyond your own self-interest. It's about taking a look at the larger picture and being aware that the decisions being made by those that “own” something impacts their wider community.

True, it's their money and their work. But regardless, the name "U.S. Open" belongs to all American pool players -- CSI is just the steward. Whether they are a good or bad steward remains to be seen.

This whole thing is getting out of hand. I'm the first guy to admit I hate the whole barbox thing. Can't stand them and wouldn't play on one for free (and I mean it) but questioning CSI and Mark on their stewardship is pushing the envelope of good taste and reasoning.

Where were half of you when KT and the IPT came to town? More "World Championship" events than wrestling and boxing. Stomping over other events, promoters and established dates. Now we have a true benevolent ambassador in Mark G and he gets questioned on the use of a title name that he effectively owns. Maybe we should make Barry B rename the US Open to the 9 Ball IOU Championship (sorry that was too easy).

I don't care for BB and thus haven't bought PPV's that I would normally support. Question Mark...not a chance.

Well I think the lack of participation is speaking loudly here .. Yes to some morons the name means zero ,,to others there's a certain reverence that comes with the words US Open Champion , and it should be a Tournoment that anyone would be proud to win as thier name will be forever etched among past legends of the game
I tip my hat to Thorstan for understanding that and calling it what it is

I believe there was no US Open 10-ball championship in 2014.....
....is it better to have no tournament?
....or have it on a barbox?

I don't like 7-footers......and don't like alternate break....and I don't like call 10-ball...
...but I salute Mark Griffin and CSI for DOING something.

Well I guess that would depend on who you ask , obviously given the lack of a full field plenty have said not at all

I consider Mark a friend and deeply appreciate what he's done for the sport. I also understand why he's doing what he's doing. And I don't believe he should incur monetary loses for no good reason. But I doubt naming the events in question more appropriately would have changed much.

I think switching the U.S. Open events to bar boxes is ill-advised. And it goes beyond just not liking bar box pool. I view it in terms of the history and future of pool in this country.

It's a valid concern that apparently the majority of folks on this site share in one form or another. Nothing wrong with questioning what's happening. A good friend will do that.

I thought that was pretty remarkable, what Thorsten said in the interview. And was a perfect counter-point to how CSI has been spinning it here.
