CTE/Pro One BANKING

This is a thread for people (and EEzBank) who have used CTE/Pro One and who have utilized it for banking. I'll share with some of the posters my experiences with CTE/Pro One and may even summarize the things that I have perceived.

The goal is to avoid arguing and so I am just discussing what the intent is in this thread.

Before I get started, I should mention that CTE/Pro One won't make you a great player by itself. You would need to take Stan's Foundation Course which the professional players take. :D I'm just kidding about the Foundation Course but I'm not kidding about the professional players taking Stan's Foundation Course.

When I took my CTE/Pro One lesson with Stan Shuffett we barely spent a few minutes on banking. The vast majority of our time was spent setting up different shots all over the table and grooving the aiming system.

Banking was an unexpected bonus or lagniappe as we like to call it down here in Louisiana. I like one pocket a lot and banking is a big part of that so I started practicing certain shots that come up in one pocket that I normally have trouble banking.

What I found out is that CTE/Pro One's pivoting allowed me to see the shot slightly differently. Sure, someone could continue to fidget and move around until the cows come home and find the same place/aiming perspective but for whatever reason, CTE/Pro One has allowed me to pivot to zero in on the exact perspective that I needed to bank the object balls into the pocket. Now don't get me wrong, I miss banks just like anyone else does even using CTE/ProOne. But it is a fact that I am making more banks and coming closer to the pocket especially with difficult bank shots than ever before.

It appears that after I utilize the CTE/Pro One aiming system and have pivoted, if I look at the shot and it seems like it is dead on I simply shoot it but if it doesn't look correct and looks quite odd, I will simply pivot from a different direction and then the shot looks better and I shoot it. Sometimes the shot looks a bit odd (unfamiliar) but I guess this is where some of the euphoria comes from when using CTE/Pro One; and I shoot the shot even though it doesn't look familiar, yet the ball somehow falls into the pocket. I'm going to try and give an example of one of the shots that look peculiar or unfamiliar but yet when I shoot it I seem to be coming closer to making the shot. Maybe my problem for some of these shots is just a restriction that I have programmed into my visual perception or maybe it's something else.

When I use CTE/Pro One, it seems that I am able to pivot to the correct banking aim line or at least much closer to the correct banking line. Sure table and ball conditions play a large part in being able to make these bank shots but I seem to always bank this short when using contact point to contact point but when I use CTE/Pro One, the OB usually gets MUCH closer to the hole and sometimes I even make it. lol

If I know I'm going to come up short using contact point to contact point, I try moving the contact point and will often bank it three rails but to the bottom rail as the third rail, sometimes leaving a shot for my opponent.

I'm not saying CTE/Pro One is the Holy Grail but if it gives a player another visual perspective that allows them to see the correct aiming line then it has to be a good thing.

I use Ron V's 90/90 system to bank and it works pretty well for me. In his system, there are really 3 shots I use...

Edge to edge - pivot to center of cb (thick hits)
Edge to center - pivot to center of cb (medium hits)
Edge to opposite edge - pivot to center of cb (thin hits)

All three of these finds me a pocket to cut a ball in.

I also have found that if I have a medium hit, I can setup for a "thin hit" and instead of pivoting to center, I pass center and use 2-3 tips of outside english to throw the ball in. (I was never taught this by Ron or anyone else, just figured it out for myself.)

This shot:

I know I can pocket this ball a few different ways.
1. right cb edge to right ob center - pivot to cb center
2. right cb edge to right ob edge - pivot to 2 tips of outside english
3. right cb edge to right ob edge - pivot to center (to bank cross corner)

At the same time, I can bank this ball:
left cb edge to left ob edge, pivot to center. Certain angles require a sense of feel (to me) and you sometimes have to add a tip of english or follow for the shot to work. After experimenting, you pick up on which shots need it and which shots wont. You also pick up on the speed required to use this system. More often than not, its at a softer speed.

I know its slightly different than cte/pro 1, but its fairly similar and works great.

I'm disappointed in you JoeyA....I'm a people too!! :D

Thanks for starting a new thread. I hope the tone of this thread will stay positive and also on topic.

I hope Stan spent a little time on CTE banking in his DVD. http://justcueit.com/

Nice post Joey.

I agree 100%, banking is easier with CTE. That's for me and for teaching.

When we teach a student SAME AIM (CTE) we always include a session on:
1. Ball pocketing.
2. Banking.
3. Combos.
4. Caroms.
5. Simple Kicks.

I always refer to SAME AIM as an Operating System more than an Aiming System.

I also hope this post stays positive.....randyg

It was a great class Randy!! I have been experiencing a lot of success using Same Aim and have had some positive feedback from the few students I have taught it to.

Cleary,
I hope to find more time to get involved with RonV's aiming system. It sounds interesting and promising from all what I have heard.
Thanks for posting. I will try and find time another day to use your information.

Eezbank,
I was so tired from the one on one lesson, by the time I started watching the video, I can't recall how much or if any portion was devoted to banking. Stan is in very good shape. I wish he would start competing. The man can play and he uses CTE/Pro One on EVERY SHOT.

Thanks Randy.

I don't know anything about SAME AIM (CTE).

But I do know about CTE/Pro One and it is an effective tool for aiming and that it has helped me in more ways than just aiming.

In Stan's one on one lesson, he covered all of the things you mentioned, but I wanted to ace the visual perception of CTE/Pro One and put most of my effort into that and so far I am extremely satisfied with it.

The banking improvement has been the most unexpected bonus.

I actually demonstrated the CTE/Pro One bank shot shooting to some of my peers at Buffalo Billiards and they were impressed with my new banking abilities.

The proof of how much I've improved will be at Derby City Classic and if I can win a match or two at banks I'll be quite happy as banks has never been my specialty.

Joey-

At the urging of another helpful forum member, I recently had a phone conversation with RonV. I am really glad that I made the call. I called from my regular poolroom, and he instructed over the phone. It went well.

RonV is an enthusiastic, helpful, sharing guy. He speaks highly of Hal, Spidey, and Stan.

My many thanks to RonV.

Sure, banking is covered on the DVD. The visuals for banking are exactly the same as those for direct pocketing, Pivoting techniques for banking occur in the same manner. Stevie, Landon and myself demonstrate various banks on the video. Diagramming and text information support the video aspect of my banking instruction.

Dr9ball, please see DVD thread for that info. Preorders, obviously, will get top priority shipping once I have DVDs in hand.

Thanks to Cleary for posting his 90/90 info on banking. I use both systems for banking and they both do what I need. I use all the same principles of banking that I use with any other system, such as speed control, spin to maintain natural angles, etc.

I'd like to see what Randy is teaching. Sounds interesting. Maybe this spring...

Best,
Mike

No problem. I was pretty surprised to find out what I could do with 90/90 when I started playing around.

I envy you being able to learn it firsthand from Ron. I'm stuck with the telephone and internet for coaching. :(

Pivot systems are like a mirror image for banking. I've occasionally used them for two and three rail banks, too.

Best,
Mike

Thanks Stan. I can't wait to get my copy!
