Cue Balance???

How exactly do you determine the balance of a cue? Do you put the whole cue together and measure from the balance point to the end of the bumper?

Actually, I think (not 100% sure) that the more correct manner is to find the balance point and then measure from the end of the cue, do not include the bumper.

Please let me know if I am wrong, but that's the way I was shown and have always determined BP.

Following on this thread it makes me ask the question? What, for an American cue do you guys consider to be a good balancing point?

In England, we generally consider a well balanced cue to have a balance point of 17-18in from the butt. We don't include bumpers, well, because we don't use bumpers on our cues.

Sorry if i'm hijacking the thread but i'd be interested to find out peoples opinions on balance points.

So........... remove the bumper, find the balance point and then measure? If the bumper isn't included in the measuring then it shouldn't be included in determining where the balance point is..... Right????????

I'm starting to thing maybe there is NO "correct" answer to this. Who would be the authority?

Edit: .... and thanks for asking this question. I've often wondered and never remember to ask. Lots of 'senior moments' occuring in the life of JimS.

Since the bumper is going to impact the weight slightly, and therefore the balance, I believe you're to leave it on - but don't include it in the measurement. This is the gist of the conversations I've had w/ makers.
As for Exile's question... it's all preference, of course, but "Americanized" cues tend to run in the 17 3/4 (pretty butt heavy) to 19 3/4 (well forward) avg range. I specify 19" for my own cues - but I also prefer a piloted steel joint.
It's also largely considered that a well balanced cue is more important than the absolute weight - and I agree within reason. But I also think that is too often used to try & compensate for a cue that has been made just too damned heavy.
 
Don't just rely on the balance point for how a cue will feel.

You can have 2 cues that have the same balance point and weight the same but feel different. It will depend on how the weight is distributed.

Try this. Take a 5 ft bar that weights 10 lb per foot. The total weight is 50 lbs with a balance point at 2.5 ft. Now take a 5 ft bar that weights 2 lb per foot the bar weights 10 lbs with a balance point at 2.5 ft. To this bar add a 20 lb weight at both ends. The bar will now be 50 lbs with a balance point at 2.5 ft.

Both bars have the same total weight and balance point.

Pick up each bar at the balance point. They should feel the same. Now move you hand forward or back 1 foot. One will feel heavier because of the way the weight is distributed.
