It's probably what ya like, but I've always liked the feel of a meaty butt, no jokes.
I don't have a clue about the taper of the butt, diameter, or how much that matters, I've just started reading about it. My friend has a cue that has a smaller cue butt size than what i think is normal, but he likes it, and he has big hands? Karl

get a caliper and measure the butt of the cue you like
this way you will know in the future if a cue is too skinny for you
if you cant get a chance to play with it

I played with a terrific Balabushka cue. It was a great playing cue but the butt to me, felt oversized. I didn't like it.

I played with a Tad cue for a couple years and it was smaller diameter than most cues and as you mentioned I think it was because I have smaller hands.

As the above post noted find out what you like, and most if not all cuemakers will make a cue to your specifications.

I personally like the butt a bit less beefy. I believe that, at least for me, it helps prevent gripping tightly. The fatter the butt the more skin touches it. (for me anyway)

Totally personal preference.

I like them thinner too.

Cue Butt Size

Cue butts were bigger back in the 50's and 60's. Then in the 70's a cue maker came out with the "Western Grip" that was smaller. At 59 I prefer a slightly large butt than the current "Western Grip" that is being used today.

Realize that with a bigger butt comes more weight and you may not be able to get a lighter cue with a bigger butt.
