Cue Experts I Need your Help HELP

Investment grade Dale Perry

:), I love it!....In 1996 I moved outside Jacksonville to Ponte Vedra Beach. Reading Pool and Billiards Magazine i saw several ads for Dale Perry and read several favorable articles. I drove over to his shop one day and ordered a snakewood, ivory and ebony cue, pretty loaded up for $2500. 1/1..... I recently donated the cue to help raise money for for a friend of a friend here on AZ and FB, believe it or not, I think it brought in $900. Investment grade Dale Perry cues to off set capitol gains!
-:)

What is this capital gains of which you speak?

Also you use another term which is unknown to me, "donated" ??????

Caps gains

In this case, I did not mean to imply there would never be a gain on a Perry. Should you sell assets held over a year for a gain, sell any Dale Perry for a loss to partially offset the other gain, :). As for donate, there was a charity pool event to help a friend of a friend so I gave them the cue to raffle/auction or sell. I did not want it collecting dust. Ever see an old girl friend and wonder to yourself, what was I thinking? I just could not have it around and it did help someone.

We discussed an issue I had with a cue several years ago, prior to my knowledge of AZ. You gave me excellent advice and I am grateful. My issue was resolved, with he owner, not the broker. Both knew what they were doing. Both POS. Fortunately, I kept the x rays sent via US mail.

these are nice cue.
all the best,
Phil

But isn't a cue dealer tradition? Welcoming a well-heeled new collector into the fold with a foooooocking?

Interestingly enough, that great thing I told Phil to do which got him on the track to straightening out his situation, is the same thing I did with one that left me scratching my head ( until you stepped in).

In case there is anyone that doesn't know, Joe van is a huge cue resource, especially in regard to those makers crazy enough to base themselves on the East Coast.

Kevin

I said it in another thread and I'll say it a again. The words should be nurture and promote, not Vaseline and suffocation. Of course we all have things we do not like, I have mine, and so be it. But generally if its a new collector and the possibility exists that he will take the hobby seriously, then no he shouldn't get "jumped in".

All I know is the USS Pool is sinking and it seems like all the life preservers are made of concrete.

I don't know what happened with Phil but I can name the dealer in less than three notes.. :)

JV (---- Name that Tune reference...

Ok, so are we just going to publicly whisper to each other about our secret inside information and leave others to get screwed by the bad dealer/s you whisper about? Or would it be better to name their name and at least a one word description of why you say they are a POS/to be avoided (thief, liar, incompetent, etc) since you are already publicly discussing them anyway so that others might also be able to avoid getting burned by them in the future?

And even if the situations/dealer/s you all referenced were already publicized at some past point, I still see no reason why you should not be using their name when you publicly discuss them in the future as many people may have missed hearing about it previously. I also understand that it can at times be a slippery slope for one dealer to publicly point out that another dealer is bad because in certain cases he may be concerned it will come across as having an ulterior motive, but that clearly isn't the case here. It came up naturally in normal conversation and the name/s should have been used IMO.

We are lamenting my poor purchase of a Dale Perry cue from Dale in !996. The other matter I told Kevin is resolved and I made no further mention nor will I.

Should you sell assets held over a year for a gain.

I've heard reports of this happening, but I relegated them to Science Fiction.

Everyone that knows me knows I've neither ever sold anything at a profit, nor ever held a thing for a year.

How people think I "should" act is none of my business.

Phil, you are one fine gentleman. I'm ashamed that someone in the cue business would try to screw you. On a much better note, Happy Easter to you and your family !! :)

I quoted what I was referring to and none of it had anything to do with Dale Perry cues. Three of you were discussing the same past deal (yours) and how the people involved were really, really bad. In reference to whatever scam/theft/misrepresentation etc that they tried to pull you specifically said "Both knew what they were doing. Both POS" among other comments from yourself and others.

All I'm saying is if they were that bad that you are going to be having a public discussion about them you should at least use their names so other people also know who to look out for. Otherwise it just kind of looks like you are all just flaunting how you are in the know and could care less who else might get screwed as long as it isn't you or your buddies with the inside info. And really they should be outed whether you were already publicly discussing them and the issues or not for that matter--but even more so when you were already publicly discussing it to begin with. Just IMO, maybe I'm wrong...

Inside information

Here's my advice for cue buyers.

If you are considering buying a big bucks Balabushka or Szamboti. Make sure the cue has been authenticated by Tasc, Barry or Joe Van, I don't care who the seller is ( other than one of those 3) .

OK, there it is, you know know everything I know.

Happy Easter from Skee Ball Nirvana

Kevin
