How much material or weight is lost when a cue is refinished and is there danger in loosing some of the precious woods or other materials when your cue is refinished? Can I expect to loose some of my shaft size (mm) when it is refinished? Can a straight shaft get a crook in it when refinishing it?

I just talked with my friend Steve Klapp and this guy is NOT talking about Steve. It's another guy in town.

Another note for Roger; cue makers do NOT paint the whole shaft. Clear is sprayed on only the first 6" to 8" above the joint.

This is an interesting reply to my questions. I made no mention to painting or clear spray on the shaft.
The post office weight shows that I did loose 1/2-3/4 oz.(that is if I can trust the cue makers scales). There are now places where I can see throught the ebony inlays, I did loose about 1/4 mm fron my shaft. I showed the cue maker the manufacture specs. and told them that I wanted them to restain the birdseye maple with American Cherry stain (manufacture specs.). I got it back with no stain, simply a clear coat.
I do not believe that I am out of line in questioning the refinish job.
 
There are certain cuemakers you can trust to refinish a cue the right way.$$$... Then you get new cue repair person's for the fast cash or dont use proper materials to do it right.
Thiers a local guy here benn doing 10+ years takes 1mm off your shaft when he cleans it he only uses sanpaper.

Just about everyone wants it done as cheap has possible, but only a few send it back to the manufacturer. Sometimes I recomend but have had cues come back bad from Mcdermott.

I bought a SW from a guy he just got it back from Cocker cues for a refinish. They gave the butt cap a 3/8 round over to remove the nicks instead of replaceing the butt cap with a new piece.$80 refinish with Cocker now became $400 with SW.

McDermott uses a UV finish that is quite thicker than automotive and I 've had the same experience with a refinish from McDermott . Cue was .250 smaller than when sent . I was pissed as they did not make good ... Also the Uv cracks and lifts if not sealed properly before application ... You should get your dough back and get a reliable cuemaker ... :cool:
