cue id needed: billard encyclopedy checkup

Hi all, im looking to indentify this cue. i need it pritty fast (aka before tomorow)

there are cue's from the same era on page 141 and 264 of 'The Billiard Encyclopedia' by Stein and Rubino. its not the same design etc, but at least you'll have a good place to start.

unfortunatly i dont have the book, so could anyone who has it, check on the cue? (maker? year? price?)

the cue is from around the 1800's. only info i can give more is that every white is ivory and the design represents a male and a female (the black and white) points on the butt. the shaft is 15mm thick, wich is also an indication of the age. i guess early 1800 maybe late 1700's. its a big investment, so i want to be sure what i'm buying.

big rep points for everyone who can tell me something about the cue.

i know the site :) its probably my most visited website. its from there that i got the info about pictures of cues of the same design/era that might be in the 'The Billiard Encyclopedia' by Stein and Rubino at page 141 and 264. i really hope someone has a copy of the book and could tell me more...

i really love this cue, but... well the price is high. so any price indication would be really nice even if it will be hard to price such an old item.

No idea what the identity of the cue is but it is a beautiful cue. This might be one of those cases where you gotta get it just cuz you love it and don't worry so much about the resale value. Sure would be prize in a collection.

mystery cue

Looks French to me - probably turn of the century. Don't have my Billiard Encyclopedia handy (I'm at work). Pricewise I don't have a clue. If it's in decent overall shape it's worth having. Sorry I can't be of more help.
 
is that a piece of leather covering up 1/2 of the very back end of the cue?? if so it could be one aspect that could possibly date the cue to the late 1700's to early 1800's. i'm pretty sure at that time some cues were made that way so you could use the back end of the cue to shoot with. nice find if everything pans out.

to bad the bluebook doesnt have them. they only have the portugees sampaio's.

well i love it, so guess i'll have to folow my guts. usually my own collection is worth around 50$ each item (i dont keep cues long normally, i prefere old accesoires), i'll probably will have to sell some cue's soon to get some cash. so i might have a Vanlaere, a hiolle and a st michel for sale soon.

omg, i think ive become like one of those cuefreaks from the wanted forum :) i think i'm an addict now :D

Good Luck....... I Regret Passing On A Number Items I've Run Across

I think I remember reading about this type of cue and some values for them. I have been searching since my previous post, with no success. It may have been info from Deno Andrews (or someone else), but I just can't find it.

AZB Deleted all posts prior to March 2003 and it may have been there. There are many knowledgeable AZB members in the FS/WTB Forum that seldom venture into this Main Forum, why don't you post/ask there ?

Solartje. There a good chance the cues in 'The Billiard Encyclopedia' by Stein and Rubino, were Photography from either Norman Clare collection or Thruston collection.

3rd edition, page 460-461 of the Bue Book, have very little information to add. Except [ are rare and command many thousands and even ten of thousands dollars. Depending on intricacy, quality, originality, and condition.]

Bottom line! Its what you feel comfort with.

Pg 141 shows 2 butts quite similar to yours. The illustration doesn't go high enough to display the splice. The illustration defines the work as marquetry and dates the cues as 17 and 1800s.

Pg 264 shows 2 very similar cues, again described as marquetry and dated early 1800s. The wedge on these 2 cues appears to be ivory or MOP whereas on the page 141 cues the wedge looks like a wood inlay.

i supose prices etc arent much discused in it. k's-10k's worth like billiardshot says looks like alot. might be worth to spend some money on letting a pro having it dated if its worth that much.

I would say French marquetry....c.1800-1850. If it were my cue I was selling, if everything is structurally intact and no major problems, no way would I ask less than $8-10k US. Would obviously like to buy it better than that though. IMHO if you are buying these for $1-2k, it's stealing....
 
real money depending on condition is about 3-5000 one just sold on ebay about 6 months ago for 3860.50 and it was incredible
 
1 Euro = 1.50 USD [round off to an even number].

I would estimate 2000 to 3250 in Europe.

USA would be 3500 to 5500. Right buyer 7500 to 12,000USD. A 150.00+ Depend on insurance to ship/mail to the United States.

All depend. Was the ferrule and tip replace and if dented or numerous of other marks.

I would estimate cue sell between 1200 to 1900 USD. Will check later to see.

The bk sayes this beveled and split bottom marquentry cue has both leather and ivory at the base. this optioncould be used by players with great skill. In europe, it was a carry over from the mace play, when a player could use eighter end of the cue.This beveled section allowed a player to slide the butt portion along the table. The second reason was that this section could be decorated in a fashion that made each cue unique and the use of the polished ivory woulf facilite a smooth stroke. 1700-1800 Not older than 1820-1830 ? French, Spanish,Italian,Portuguese and dutch.
