Cue Lathe from Cowboy Billiards

American Cowboy Billiards Link to products and feedback

This is only a few recent feedbacks. Sure you can find a couple bad ones in the thousands we received.. Over 11000 positive now. We do try to make sure every customer is happy but you can't please some and we certainly are not going to issue a full refund to a customer after using our lathe for 6 months of use and his trying to rewire itwith a dimmer switch then resolder the foot control and return it with a burned up motor armature.

People can believe what they want without any more of your lies Bob. I have e-mails and receipts that will prove that I sent you back your trash after about 2 weeks, not 6 months. You must have me confused with another one your unhappy customers.

Anyone who doesn't believe me is more than welcome to throw away $200 and buy your so-called 'lathe'. All I ask is that they take pictures (something I should have done) and a post a full review.

Customer reviews of our lathe speak for themselves.

Another feedback from a customer this morning. Also some of Josh's email threats below. I think that about says it all. What type of dummy would try to wire a motor using an electrical light dimmer switch??? He tried to claim he had a licensed electrician do the work so it had to be good. What ever!! Next is the feedback from this morning from a real customer. Then Josh's actual emails and threats after returning his modified lathe motor ect. Read the trueth for yourself!! The one Josh Curry says is a lier and only sells junk. Now you can see for yourself who the real lier is.
Thanks Everyone. Bob Moss

Regardless, I will continue to dispute the charge. It’s nothing more than a 5 minute phone call for me. How long does the money get removed from your account during that time. 6 weeks or so? Is it really worth it?

I guess we’ll find out how many times you can dispute the same charge.

Bob, by now you probably have realized that I have disputed the charge again with my credit card company.

I just wanted to let you know that I will continue to dispute the charge until you give me my money back or AMEX finds in my favor.

Hello American Cowboy Billiards, We are pleased to inform you that we have successfully disputed chargebackcase #PP-691-868-513. The buyer's card issuer has decided in your favorand within seven days you will receive reimbursement for $199.99 USD. It is PayPal's standard practice to dispute wrongful chargebacks. One ofthe benefits of using PayPal is that our team of chargeback specialistswill gather the necessary information from you and work with the creditcard company until the chargeback is resolved. We appreciate your prompt response to our request for information aboutthis transaction. -----------------------------------Transaction Details----------------------------------- Buyer's name: Josh CurryBuyer's email: josh@joshcurry.com

Hi Josh; You wanted us to issue a refund for modified used lathe. The payment did not clear and the funds are still not in our account. Paypal says the dispute has not been cancelled. Had you kept the lathe and stopped the payment we would have had no choice but to file fraud charges. This is what both ebay and paypal recommended we do prior to your agreeing to return the lathe. The lathe was only returned by you after we filed a fraud report with ebay. I'll believe the dispute was closed when we see it. We can then deal with the unpaid item strikes and refund.
Thanks Bob Moss

Bob, I talked to both AMEX and PayPal today. Basically, once AMEX closes out the dispute it can take anywhere from 30-60 days until the funds are released back. So, I guess you should have been more willing to work with me before I had to file the dispute, don’t you think?

Anyway, I will wait to hear from you on when that money finally makes its way back to you. I will also call PayPal every week to find out if it has yet. Once you have the funds I expect that you will send me back the $199.99 for the lathe that I have already returned to you.
Also, thanks a ton for the non-payment strikes that I got today from eBay. You already have the lathe back and you’re going to get the money back for the tips. Was that really necessary?
- Josh

The lathe didn't impress me from the pictures, BUT, I may order one of his steady rest/tailstocks just to steady the butts when I re-tip one-piece house cues.

just more hot air!

Sherm

The Rollers are junk i have the steady rest and unless you make collets your self, you are asking for problems, the collet they send you is just a rubber tube. That wore out in the mater of two shaft cleanings. I also can never get the darn thing to stay on center please save yourself the money and time and get a better one. I must give credit though, it is a good (not great) attempt to provide a simi cheap alt.

At least I know how to spell 'liar' you 'loser'. Oh, and FYI, the R key is right next to the E key. My last name is CURRY, not CUEEY. Get it right if you are going to talk trash about me.

My threat was only to tell people about my experience with you. Welcome to the information age. When you rip someone off they are going to tell everyone about it! Speaking of threats, where is all the 'legal action' you promised to take against me? Let's see, you could give me my money back, or pay a lawyer per hour what you owe me. That doesn't work out too well, does it?

You won the dispute because you are a LIAR. I didn't break anything. It sucked to begin with.

You posting my e-mails doesn't prove anything. And yes, a licenced electrician did do the dimmer switch for me, and guess what, it didn't help because not only is that foot switch you used a piece or junk, the motor is a piece of junk as well!

I have moved past this personally. $200 is pocket change to me and I fought you on this out of principle more than anything else. I only post here to help educate others so they don't waste their money as well.

I find it very funny that all of a sudden you are interested in defending yourself. Maybe you should go back a few pages and see just how many people think your equipment is crap. All your doing by posting here is bringing the thread back to the top ensuring more people will read it which doesn't benefit you or your reputation at all. GET OVER IT! I have.

I just bought the "PORTABLE DRILL LATHE FOR POOL CUE REPAIR TIP SHAFT TOOL" for $60. I'm gonna do a full review and post pics as well. I have done a few tips in the past, I'm hoping this will make it a little easier. Now I know this isn't a lathe setup, but I just wanted something to be able to replace tips and do shaft cleaning and slicking.

So far I took it out of the box, and this is what I found out:

1. The steady rest seems to be a descent setup, don't like the idea of hard rubber wheels though.
2. The drill rest is just a hose clamp and is shakey at best, so I tossed it aside and am using a benchtop vise to hold the drill.
3. I bought a router speed control box for $16 from harbor frieght to adjust the drills speed accordingly
4. I'm not a big fan of the "universal arbors" but I tried it anyway. It actually worked OK and spun the shaft pretty straight. But I'll be buying the correct threaded bolts and cutting the heads off to chuck to the drill, that way I know it's centered.
5. The "collet" is just a piece of plastic tubing, didn't fit my test shaft. So I cut it down the side and wrapped a piece of duct tape around the "collet" to hold it tight. Worked good enough.
6. I wanted to see what it would do if I just used the steady rest with no collet or tape, and sure enough, it wore an indention ring in the shaft. I'll post a pic of that when I get the time to do it lol

I'll be doing a test run of it when my tips and other stuff come in. I'll post pics of the process too, start to finish, using this setup.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the indention that wore into my shaft? Also, what RPM should a shaft be turning to trim the tip to the diameter of the ferrule?

The price is down to $60 now? HAHAHA! That seems more appropriate considering the quality. At that price you can afford to upgrade a few of the components and you might have something useable. Before you do all of that though. PLEASE post pics of the 'original' equipment so people can see what it comes with. The so-called 'arbors' are definitely something to see.

Also, for reference, the one you bought is not the same one I had. The one I bought actually came with the motor and foot controller for speed control. But, I'm sure the other components are the same. Watch out for those rubber wheels. They will permanently damage your shaft if you don't wrap the shaft with SOMETHING. That plastic tubing wont fit most shafts either.

Good luck. Don't say you weren't warned. ;)

The $60 was from the ebay best offer. Plus it wasn't the setup you bought, those are like $189 or $199, don't recall. I bought my stuff before I even knew of this site :( but we'll see how it goes.

I was not able to find anything about those so-called lathes before I bought one either. After what I went through I felt it necessary to create this thread to inform people about him and his products so they would not have to go through what I did. I REALLY hope you don't have to call him about any problems that you have with it. He's all friendly until you have a problem, then he's a real a$$hole. Customer service isn't one of his strengths.

I'm starting to worry now. I got one of his Sharpshooter shafts and it arrived bent! It's still being "processed" between Pos Malaysia and USPS but some of noises Bob is making is not encouraging at all. Wish I got a Pred instead. Save me all the trouble. :(

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, you should go with a known brand like OB, Predator, McDermott, etc... I prefer the OB equipment.

I've been using Bob's roller rest for 2 years, and have not had any problems! It works very well for cleaning and sealing shafts. I also put tips on with the roller rest. I've installed over 100 tips without any problems. To stop the rubber wheels from leaving anything on the shafts. Try using a piece of clear rubber hose. Cheap and effective. Bob has brought many affordable, and useful pieces of equipment to the general public. If you don't like it, then you should of looked for something else to complain about.

Um, no, I don't think so. Bob's equipment is crap and people need to know that.

Never tried to post pics on a message board, so I hope this works.
1st pic is of the "universal arbor and the collet" - basically it's a cane tip or chair leg rubber with a screw "clamp" through the base. The "collet" is just rubber tubing that didn't fit the shaft I used to test. Not the best quality stuff, but it worked OK enough.
picture.php

This pic is of the drill mount setup - All it is was a hose clamp, "L" bracket and the base, I felt it was very shakey
picture.php

This pic is of the roller rest setup - Like the design, but the use of the hard rubber wheels was a bad choice IMO. You can also see the indention ring left from the wheels on the shaft if you don't use a collet or the tubing it comes with. Plus, I decided to buy a tool rest and mounted it close to the roller rest for obvious reasons lol
picture.php

Another pic of the rest and shaft indention.
picture.php

Another pic of the shaft indention. Kinda hard to make out, but if you look straight up from the wheels, you can see the indention in the shaft.
picture.php

My MUCH more stable solution for the drill rest lol w/universal arbor, spun OK and straight
picture.php

This is a pic of the top wheel. It's supposed to be a sealed bearing setup, but I've not seen sealed bearings leak in such a seriously short amount of time. This was after 1 use. Just to the inside of the wheel, you can see a greenish color ring...thats the grease coming out of the bearing.
picture.php

I like the design of this tool setup, but the parts used were overall VERY cheap and probably not the best decision to use them.

Functionallity: Works ok and does what it intended to do. Personally, I would (and have) changed a few items and ideas to make this better. But what do you expect for $60.

Anyone have any ideas on what to replace the hard rubber wheels with on the roller rest?

Wow

Holy crap that's one heck of a indentation from those wheels. Much worse than I figured it would be. I have seen people use blue tape instead of the hose but I don't even think that would keep your shaft safe. thanks for the pics. Money saved on not buying that steady rest. :)
I think your best bet would be to talk to some of the guys on here that sell lathes. They could hook you up with a steady rest with a 3 jaw chuck in it and end all the worries. It's a good chunk of money but less then a replacement shaft :) I'm glad I decided not to go cheap and save up for a good quality product. Just sucks having to wait till after my wedding. So for now I'll just keep using my friends Midsize Cuesmith when I have repairs. Good Day.

Well, in all fairness, it does work OK when you slice the tubing down one side then put it on your shaft where the wheels are going to touch, then get a strip of duct tape and go around the tubing to keep it from spinning on the shaft. that way there is no tape residue left on the shaft. I just wanted to show what would happen if people didn't read the instructions and just jump right in. The instructions DO say to use the tubing, but it didn't fit my shaft....so I improvised lol

Just sucks having to wait till after my wedding.

Whatcha mean wait. Why should your future wife get all the kitchen goodies like stainless cookware, blenders, knives cookware etc.

Put yourself on the gift list and tell her you need a cue processor as bad as she needs a food processor.

Where theres a will, theres a way.

But you are correct. If you were to use the idea of a drill in a vise, with a nice tool rest that someone posted a pic of and a 4 jaw chuck steady rest, you'd be far ahead of the game than investing in something that you have to heavily modify in order to keep it from destroying your cues. The 4 jaw rests are under $100. Scrounge around and you could build the rest for another $100 or under.
