cue lathe problems

Does anyone have any experience with Bassel's Beast cue lathe? I purchased one a few years ago and still can't get it to perform properly. When I received it the lead screw was bent. He replaced it with another. After using it a couple of times, the brass gear was destroyed. I contacted Bassel and he said the thread pitch was off a little on the lead screw and I would have to purchase the correct one along with a new brass gear. This made me extremely angry that I had to purchase something that he messed up. The next problem was the tailstock was off. If I centered it at the headstock, it was off over one tenth of an inch at the other end. How can you possibly turn anything straight with this much of a variation? Now the auto feed quit working. I rarely use this feature but now can't use it at all. The indexing feature of the headstock doesn't line up with the hole he made for the lock screw. I foolishly invested hard earned money in this lathe. Does anyone have any helpful hints on how to repair the problems?

Brass ,really? Wow ,well 1st always go through lathe or tune to specs, especially new ,i mean it gets banged up during shipping... but keep calling Bassel im sure he will help

There's no specs to tune to. It came with zero literature or set up information. Open the shipping box and figure it out on your own.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I baught my first lathe from Bassel, a few month later I had some questions about a rear chuck and maybe getting a bigger lathe from him.
All of a sudden he stoped to reply to emails. If you look at his Azb profile it`s quite some time since he has been active.
His website is still open, but I suspect he doesnt do much work with cue lathes anymore?

In your situation, I would call Chris Hightower and ask if he would be willing to fix the problems
with this lathe.

He might not want to touch it with a 10 foot pole, but IF he will accept such a project,
you can rest assured you will get a properly functioning tool.

Option 2. A very close second.
Sell the lathe to some handy and clever person and buy a cue lathe from one of the two
AZBers(Chris or Todd) who stand behind their products and are easily accsseable
thru this site.

Unique and Porper are also options.

Good point Dale. The parts used are very similar and knowing how good Chris is at customer service, he might take this on.
It`s a shame that Bassel abandones his customer like that after selling him a $4000+ lathe, and when going through Bassel`s old post he seems to be getting a fair amount of criticism for changing his designs all the time, making it hard for customers to get service on their existing products.
Looking at his website I think it`s fairly probable that he hasn`t sold many of those cuemonster lathes, atleast judging from the lack of pictures and spesifications.

I am thinking that it just needs to be correctly levelled and then have the headstock correctly aligned to the correctly levelled assembly. It can take quite some time to properly level a machine and then to align the headstock etc etc. After going through the alignment of my own machine, I leave the headstock in the fixed position on the lathe and have a pulley on the back of the bearing mounted steady rest. If need be I can mount a motor and belt and then drive the steady rest like a spindle with the main headstock in free wheel.
I have not heard from Bassel in quite some time, but have not had any real issues with anything I have brought off him either. In saying that, all the people I have dealt with that sell the Taig based parts, I have had no issues with.

Selling is a great option. How well do you think the sale will go now that I posted about the problems I'm having? For what I have invested, I need to work with this first.

It shouldnt be an issue but u may or may not have to take a loss ,if it was me id sell it fr wat i could get asap and move on with my life....

Not very good .

Years ago he came out with a lathe with a weak motor.
He claimed it would be powerful enough to do some coring.
We questioned it. We pretty much asked him to show a video of the lathe in action.
He never showed a video.

That's because the motor couldn't core a balsa rod. If you put any pressure on the motor the internal breaker trips. I added an AC motor like Chris suggested and it works great. I'm completely convinced everything Bassel promised about his products doesn't pan out. I wish my foresight was better than my hindsite.

When was the last time you heard from Bassel and. What was his explanation?
I think selling the lathe as it is now iskveld a stupid idea, either you will take a huge loss or you will pass on problems andog create a headache for yourself.
I think that this can be fixed, Bassel might not be the guy to do it? But I'm sure Todd or Chris can help you out with parts and get your lathe up and running.

This is all good advice and I thank you all. Unfortunately the best course would have been to never buy anything from Bassel. Hopefully others will learn from my mistake and leave his stuff alone.

It is still all taig equipment, no? Much of it stock pieces? If you are not comfortable selling it to someone as a cue lathe, you could sell off all of the parts on ebay. Some of the parts you might sell easily here.

This seems to be pretty common theses days. He was outed for using customers as guinea pigs instead of research and development. Disappear a while back unto Facebook probably but don't be surprised if he shows up again'.

As more and more find out is not easy to make a living or make money making cues they become the sharks of opportunity. I'm sure with some help you can get that lathe to work but the value as you know is on a diminishing scale. If there's anything I can do feel free to contact me.
