Cue order fell through...

Due to some problems, my order for the Predator Wood to Wood Sneaky Pete fell through. So, I've been thinking...

If you had your choice, would you choose the Predator SP or would you choose a Joss 16 cue, shown here:

Even though I'm a beginner, I'd like to get a pool cue that I can grow with. I know it sounds kinda weird, but I think there should be a bond between a player and his cue. I figure I could always get a Predator shaft to go with this cue in the future.

So, tell me... Which would you choose?

This is just me personally but if I were in your shoes I'd get an entry level Schon and not worry about an LD shaft right now.

I really like the Schon STL9 cue, but I'm afraid that my pool playing ability just doesn't warrant a $700 cue. It really is a beaut, though. I'm big on four points and those points sure are pretty with the maple veneers. Max price I could swing for a cue would be $400. Does anyone here own a Joss cue in this price range that can tell how they like it? Thanks in advance.

I am not the person selling it. Just saying nice cue for the price.
 
If there is debate between the Joss and Schon - I would recommend the Schon.

What concerns me is that you are looking at spending more money to get the performance of a predator shaft.
As a beginning player and l/d shaft can really help.
I would suggest if you really want the performance of a l/d shaft, just buy a cue that already has it. Otherwise it will be a waste of $$.

Neither. I would take $300 (that is about 6 to 8 lessons worth) and find a good pool instructor in the area so your game can take off, and you don't start building bad habits now that are going to be so hard to break later. Then I would take the other $100 and buy me a nice plain bacote or cocobolo, Schmelke cue, built in the USA. It is good to have your own cue and get comfotable with it, and the tip is going to matter a lot more to you than an LD shaft. Heck,if you are a beginner, then squirt, swerve, throw, and understanding the effects of English probably don't have that much meaning to you and never will until you learn the proper mechanics, aiming, tangent lines, use of English, etc. Then when you start playing your game better, and you are earning some more dough then time to reward yourself with a Schon, Joss, or whatever else you might need. JMHO. Good Luck.
 
Wood to wood, flat faced, big pin, LD shaft....

I do agree with putting a few bucks back for lessons tho.... Preferably someone who does video analysis and can show you your progression over the course of a few lessons...

I just think the LD shaft reduces one of the variables and any equation is easier to master when you limit variables.....
 
If you want to get better get lessons, if you want a cue in your price range go with a schon so at least it'll be easier to sell than a joss down the road when you want to upgrade!
 
I would love to take lessons, but that won't happen for some time. You see, I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska and I have not been successful at locating an instructor here. Only person I found in Alaska was Sabrina Peterson in Anchorage, but I've been unable to get in contact with her. I've spoken to Randyg and he suggested I come see him in August, which is what I plan to do. Until then, I plan to do a lot of reading and studying from the books I just ordered.

With that said, I am enrolled in a billiards class that will be taught at my University next semester. I'm not looking to spend money to get the performance of an LD shaft, I'm just looking to buy a nice cue that I can grow into. I have a set budget that I'm allotting myself (consider it a late birthday/early Christmas present). I'm not looking for a cheap cue or an expensive cue, just a good solid cue. I do appreciate the replies and all the advice given so far. =)
 
I'll pitch a few pennies in here. The Joss listed at the BW would be a good first step. Solid construction and a good player. You'll even save a few bucks. If money is the object buy the Joss. I will however point out that the Schon deal offered is a killer. I believe the Schon to be a better cue. The resale value of the Schon will never go down. So it is a steal. Whichever you go with you will not be sorry. Good luck in you're class.

Oh yea just thinking here. The cheaper Joss allows you money for a case and the basic necessity's you'll need. Scuffer, shaper and so on. With this thinking I believe you would be better served with the Joss.

To answer your question: I would definitely choose any Joss over any predator cue. As I've mentioned before, Joss butt + pred shaft is the way to go if you choose to go with a predator shaft. Every uniLoc predator I've played with played dead and dull. Joss vs. Schon? In my experience a toss-up. If you like piloted steel joints (I do), imo you can't go wrong with either.

Considering your budget, I would not worry too much about resale value. If you come to enjoy this game as much as many of us do on this forum, you'll soon be looking for a new cue...and if you spend as much time on these forums, you'll probably be looking at the glut of custom cues available right here in the FS section, or placing an order with a cuemaker. At that point, your Joss/pred combo would serve as the perfect backup cue to bring to bars/leave at work/school etc. When I travel to asia my Joss/pred combo comes with me, not my custom cues that are literally irreplaceable.

$400-$500 puts you within range of many, many full-splice customs, and a few plain jane models from solid makers. Waldo's Schon is a steal at that price in terms of resale value, but how much was the cue brand new?

I sold a close friend who works at my homeroom a ST11 Schon just like the one Jimmy (waldo's) has for sale to her for her son's 21st bday for $650 two years ago and they are great cues, 2 months ago she had me find him a 314-2 shaft for it. Also Jimmy is great people, I have bought cues and cuemaking products from him many times and my Itrader will show this.--Leonard
 
Yeppers, that was a nice Schon for sale but it's been sold already.

I've decided to buy a used Joss from a member here since he gave me a really good price. I do still plan to buy that Schon STL09 in the near future though because I'm totally in love with it. lol Thanks everyone for all the help, now I just need to get a few lessons.
 
The only Schon I have for sale now is a like new ST 8 (refinished by proficient billiards) there clearcote looks better than and new Schon I have seen with new black leather wrap that is for sale for $450 with 1 shaft.--Leonard
