im buying a viking cue from billiardwarehouse (because of the custom order form) and had a questions about the shaft...

im 6'3 so a 58" cue is too small and on a standard sized cue i grip far back on the cue as most tall players do.

so if i get a 31" shaft making it a 60 " cue will i grip more toward the middle of the handle you think?

if so ill probaly get a wrapped cue.

Thanks.

Hey Mike, the Billiardwarehouse is a good company tro deal with. But, I do like the idea of a 31" shaft, this may help with the cues length, but it may also through off the ballance point of the cue a great deal. I also like a long shaft, (30") but a shaft that is two inches longer than the cues butt will be too flexable to my experience.

Take Care

I have played with a few Vikings they all were good cues, one in pertacular was AWESOME, I borrowed it from a guy in SLC and beat 2 guys in 2 nights with it-I was on the road with a junk B-series McDermott. I asked to buy it-he wouldnt sell:( .

Thanks, they are a great company ive delt with them many times.

so are you saying 30" shaft is plenty long?

or maybe they guys at schmelke could make me a cue with a 30" butt and 30" shaft...

Schmelke will definitely make you a 60" cue. Be sure to look at the cuemaker's blanks they have. Everything they have, such as an ebony front and BEM points with a deluxe shaft (or two) is available. I can attest that they stand behind their work too. They have an incredible variety of woods. Gaboon ebony, cocobolo, bacote, and four veneer full spliced butt blanks. They will make you a cue very reasonably from any of these woods. Understand that it will not be finished to the level of a custom cue with auto clear coat and ringwork, but they are a tremendous value. Maybe Mike Gulassy's new miracle coating would be an option after the fact, but then Schmelke may not remake it if it warps, which they normally would.

If you're 6'3" with 36" sleeves, your rear hand will probably be at the rear of a wrap or where the wrap would be. That's with the tip of the cue at the cueball...Tom

Cue length

I am 6'3 and have went to a longer cue and like it very well my opinion is to put the extra length in the butt and not the shaft. Reason for this is if you ever decide to use other shafts from any other cue maker with your pin size or decide for a pred. or ob-1 your cue will always be same length, I think you have many more options doing it that way, Mike Davis plays with a 62" cue with pred. shaft he was the one who told me I needed a longer cue and explained this to me hope this helps:eek:

The longer cue may be a good idea if you tend to grip at the very rear, but I would not suggest a 29" butt coupled with a 31" shaft. The shaft may be too flexible, the balance of the cue may not be right, it may not fit in many cue cases, and whatever resale value it might have had would be greatly affected if you ever wanted to sell it later. Get a cue with a shaft and butt of equal lengths. For production cues I would go with a McDermott if they will make a 60" cue, and for a low budget production I agree with Schmelke as being a good choice, and even their custom options are pretty inexpensive.

Unless you play bar pool, get a 30" shaft and go wrapless :thumbup2:

I think that by making a 30" butt and a 30" shaft you will have a more perfect balance than with a 31" shaft. and Schmelke would do a good job for you.

I'm buying a viking

I have been experimenting with cues for the last 12 years. It interest me how one cue performs vs another. I don't care much how a cue looks. I consider myself an above average player (unless were in the phillipines :) I have or have owned about 20 cues during this time and played with many others. I have two viking cues flat faced wood to wood. These cues imo are substandard. They have a buzz and power loss when using extreme side english, top, or draw. I have tried a viking with a piloted metal joint and it was solid and one fine cue. I have tried many different shafts and discussed this with a top cuemaker so it isn't the shaft. I believe it to be the small amount of threads on the quick release wood to wood joint causes a tuning fork response. All the other cues I have are good cues with advantages and disadvantages subject to player preferences. There will always be someone who says what I am saying is BS but this is my experience with these two cues and maybe it is just my Viking cues. I believe previous posters have given you some good advice and mine is stay away from viking wood to wood quick release joints. I have learned alot on az from others knowledge, opinions and experiences and imo is what makes azb so valuable and entertaining. Take care:)
