Hey guys whats going on, I have a very high value Tim Scruggs that I would like to take a moment to discuss.

The cue has what my local cuemaker is calling a buzz. This cue has been played by me maybe a total of 5 times. Recently as I have been taking it out of the case to play with it I noticed a loud click when i hit the ball.

After hearing this the cue was put away for further inspection by Mike Miller of Michael Morgan custom cues. He then bounced the cue lightly and you could easily and rather loudly in my opinion hear a rattling of some kind.

Now he checked the weight bolt, screw, and joint, everything fine. He said it could be glue that came loose in there.

Is there any way to fix this without having to take apart a 3k cue?

Please help folks im going out of my mind with this decision. This cue is the prize of my collection.

Thanks

I have a nice scruggs that got a rattle one day in the middle of a match. Weight bolt in butt just came lose and I tightened it up on my own with a Torx driver. Even if the weight bolt feels tight to you, give a little umph (not too much of course) and see if that fixes it... worked for me...

I also recommend what or1pkt said and contact Timmy, but I hear thats a little hard to do now since Mike has passed.

Hey thanks for the reply yeah we tried that tightened everything up down there just in case and its still doing it.

In regards to Tim, well Tim is done and has set foot into the shop maybe once or twice since Mike's tragic passing. That is why I am asking here.

It sucks because this cue really is the prize of my collection and I really dont want to have to do massive massive work to it.

Thanks

The source of clicks like this can be very hard to find - sometimes they sound like they're coming from the shaft end, while other times they sound like they're coming from the butt end. Did you tap the shaft and butt separately on a pool table to try and isolate the problem? It could be anything that is loose: the tip, the ferrule, the shaft collar, the butt collar, the pin, the insert, the butt cap, the weight bolt, or the bumper. You have to check them all; starting with the tip.

Roger

Yes we checked both Roger, and thank you for your reply, the problem has been isolated to be within the forearm we think or in the handle area.

The shaft is not the problem at all. The joint pin joint fixture weight bolt, bottom screw etc are all in tact and not loose.

Its a pain in the butt because I love the cue and feel that i would be devaluing it putting that much work into it.

Roger thanks again and guys keep the replies coming !!!

Sometimes there can be another weight bolt under the one that has been tightened. Take out all of the weight bolts and see if it goes away.

Ooooh, that's sounding very ugly. :sorry:

I agree completely, one of the good things about living in NY is that I have Pete Tascarella in my back yard so i might just take a ride over to his shop and drop it off there and see what he says.

Thanks guys.

We do not think its in the joint it sounds a little lower down.

In most of his cues there is a joint where the forearm meets the wrap. It's a tenon joint with a hidden screw. More than likely, something loosened up or is broken in there. In any case, the repair is major. I would definitely contact Scruggs cues for the repair.

Chris

Ps. just read the above and no question Tascarella could figure it out.

I believe the key word was 'buzz', and that usually means the 'A' joint where the handle and prong (forearm) are joined. The pin there has loosened. It's fixable, but quite a bit of work, and expensive. Scruggs should probably be called first.

If you had it checked by Mr. Morgan who is a cue maker and he could not find the problem you need to contact Tim Scruggs. He is the only person to send the cue too, if it is not a simple fix in most cases the original cue maker is the only way to go. Tim knows better than anyone on this forum how his cues are constructed, and yes where the forearm meets the wrap area or the A-Joint there is a tenon and a connection screw. In all Scruggs cue I have seen except the TS Sneaky Pete's or other Full Spliced style cues ( Mostly Conversions ).

Again contact Tim, unless some one has the cue in there hands there is no way to tell what the problem may be.

I would absolutely love to call Tim Scruggs but he is from what I understand retired. After Mike's tragic passing he is done. I have called the shop now on multiple occasions to get a handle that Mike was working on for me out of the shop shipped to me but to no avail so I highly doubt they will be doing any repair work.

Thanks anyway Manwon.

It can probably be fixed by Pete Tascarella. If you can't get a hold of Timmy, Pete would be the next best choice for you.

It really depends on how bad it is. If it is minimal, I would just live with it. If you can't stand it, just bite the bullet and do surgery on it. It is a good amount of work, but it ain't really no big deal to get it fixed. What you need to do is to properly diagnose the problem (thru Pete) and then just go for it. Problem solved.

There is another guy close to Timmy both logistically and personally who is not only is capable but also is a nice guy. Try calling Bob frey. He worked with Tim for many years and is in the same area (Baltimore). Might be something in the water cause there is quite a few well know Baltimorons that are excellant cue makers.

I bet ya Bob can hook you up!

Good luck with your cue!

Much appreciated thank you. I actually have a sweet Bob Frey "Not So" Sneaky. Absolutely love it.
