Cue size question

Hey everyone,

Okay here is the question.
My girl wants a cue for her birthday, but she is a bit on the not so tall end she's 5' 2, I believe she needs a 55" cue, I could be wrong though. But finding one that is that size with a certain design on it is not easy. So I was wondering how could I make a 57" cue shorter, could I just buy a different and shorter shaft for it?
Or how would I go about doing this? Any suggestions?

For a 55", custom is probably the only way to go. There a a few cuemakers on the board that could make a simple Duffy convertion for under $200
 
I don't think that a standard 58 inch cue should be a problem. As stated here get a light one, 17 - 18oz.

If you still want a shorter cue then go custom. Get a shorter butt and keep the shaft at 29 inches.
 
Under $200, is a bit pricey. She wants this specific cue and its only $40 bucks. It only comes in that one size, so I'm trying to think of the most least expensive route to get it 55" without ruining the cue itself. She tried a 57-58" cue and its too big for her, she can't hold it comfortably.
So is there a cheaper route?

sounds to me she needs some coaching help in the stance/grip department!!my wife is 5'0'' and uses a 17oz 58'' 13mm shaft cue

Either your wife as abnormally long arms (wingspan is usually very near body height), Or your wife is choking up on the cue...near the physical balance point (between grip and joint), Or your wife has a 20+ inch long bridge.....Or she's had a lot of practice shooting a particular way that may not be causing any problems. Delivery of the cue at moment of contact with the CB is the key to a consistent stroke. If you would, maybe you could post a video of her shooting (side-view).
Or let me know how long her bridge is, and how far her grip hand is from the back of the 58" cue.
To find the bridge length, address the cue ball, and measure from the cue's tip to her bridge hand (where the cue physically rests on her bridge hand).

Ideally, you want the grip hand in the middle of the grip, which should be 12 to 18 inches behind the physical balance point of the cue.

But I know she wants a cue stick with wolves on it. No pink color she hates pink.
So maybe someone can find something cause I can't find it in that size.

BTW: The bridge length/grip distance post was directed at HDR10 because I am curious about how his wife shoots with a 58" cue at her height. I suspect she has a super long bridge. I have seen many asian players use a super long bridge, and shoot very well.
 
You could buy this one and have a cue smith trim the end of the butt, replace the joint & trim it down, and replace the ferrule/tip trimming the shaft a little bit.

With these cues, I would replace the joint, and I would even replace the shaft. These cues usually have Ramin wood shafts and brass joints/ferrules...which I am not at all fond of.

if you want the cheapest easiest route to make it shorter, rather than buy another shaft, which i doubt you'll find a shaft that size anyway, take it to a cue repair guy and cut whatever you want off the tip end , install new ferrule & tip. if it's a $40 cue to start with.
then see if she's happy with that length before moving her up to another cue

unless she loves using a bridge a lot , get her a 60" cue

Draz,

Local cue smiths can be hard to find, but web searches and asking around at tournaments/league nights would be a good start.

Another thing to consider, is whether your girl has a long bridge. If she does, then you probably shouldn't shorten the shaft.

It shouldn't cost much for someone to remove the brass joint on the butt, shorten the butte, and install a new joint. The new shaft might cost a bit, but, in my opinion, the shaft is more important than the butt.

If you can't find a shaft cheap, then send me a PM. I've got some used shafts sittin' in the closet that I'd sell real cheap.

a 57" cue should be fine. if you want something 55" you're going to have to shell out the cash and go custom
 
do not have to go custom

I order cues for length all the time. Go to this web site and pick a style and design (http://www.schmelkecue.com/). Then call Steve or Dave and have length made for about $15. You can even choose pin, wrap, wood, etc. Great hitting cue and far less than custom. I order up to 64" for taller players and they are FAR less than $200 and play just as well for most people.
