Cue stick question

I just bought my first personal cue stick and decided on a PureX HXT15 based in part on some great information from this forum. I like a lighter cue so I ordered an 18oz. When It arrived it immediately felt heavy to me so I weighed it and it came in just a little under 20oz. Upon further investigation, I realized it had a 2 oz weight bolt. Removal of the bolt yielded a cue just under 18oz, as you might expect.

So my newbie question is: can I/should I use the cue without the weight bolt? Does that yield a proper 18 oz cue? Or, am I messing up its balance or something and am I better off returning it for what I ordered?

Sorry if this is silly question, but advice appreciated.

You didn't screw anything up.

The dealer would likely just remove the bolt to make it an 18 oz anyway.

You decide if you like the balance.

Without the bolt it will be more forward balanced.

In some older cues with a delrin butt cap the bolts holds the butt cap on. Many modern cues are designed to change the weight bolt up to and including not using one.

Play it, if you like it, then it works.

If you keep the cue, keep the weight bolt. If you sell the cue down the line the buyer might want it.

Yeah, if it feels good without the wight bolt, then go with it. You can probably also get a smaller weight Bol to get to an inbetween weight if you want it just a little above 18oz.

Do what the good Doctor ordered, Jstfun. If it doesn't work call him in the morning.

By-the-way, welcome to the forum. We'd have brought refreshments, but it's getting late and a lot of the guys have already gone home and have to get up early.

Removing that weight bolt may put you right where you want to be on weight. Don't fret a half ounce one way, or the other. After you use it awhile you won't notice the difference. :)

In other words it was Tramp Steamer's turn to buy.

Welcome to the forum! Sorry I missed that it was your first post. It smells a little funny in here at first, but you'll get used to it.

Enjoy the new cue.

Please do let us know how it plays.

If you like---We like it. Just give it time to learn how to fully use it. Also, Dont get upset when you nick the butt up. Its bound to happen on your first cue. Hell, im on my 15th cue and ive nicked up every one of the first 14 within the first month.

The Balance PT SHOULD Be predetermined.màrk.

Yes, well....he bought a Players cue, not a custom.

Ideally, I am with you on that point.

But specifying the balance point...using just wood and no weight bolt...on a $127 import cue is kind of a pipe dream.

Adding or removing 2 oz from the back of the cue is going to change the balance point regardless of the price of the cue. I play with a19.75 oz cue, the shaft weighs 4.8 oz. I have a second shaft the weighs 4.1 oz. Just switching those shafts changes the balance point of the cue, and also significantly changes the hit of the cue. I experimented with putting the weight back on the butt end of the cue, this changed the balance point even further back.

4.8 oz shaft? That's a helluva dense shaft wood!

thanks everyone for the warm welcome and good advice. Happy to be here.

I get that changing the weight at the end might affect the balance. I guess I was just trying to understand if I'd be a the same point by removing the bolt as I would if they just filled the order correctly. In other words, when I had my choice of weight When ordering is the norm that they'd start with a 18oz stick for those that ordered an 18oz; add a 1 oz weight for those ordering a 19 oz; add a 2 oz for those ordering a 20 oz, etc.

As someone suggested earlier, I'm probably over thinking this, but on the other hand I might learn something.

You're correct in your thinking. If your order had been filled correctly, that same cue may have been sent but the bolt would've been removed at the vendor shop.

Just look at it like this: you bought the cue and got a 2 oz weight bolt for free!

What is the length and diameter of that 4.8 oz shaft? Is is maple? Is there a brass insert? How old is it? Who made it?

Sorry so many questions. But 4.8 oz? Wow!

4.8 oz shaft

Hi
I am not good with words when I have to question someone on what they wrote.

But I have to question the 4.8 oz solid maple shaft.

My experience is I have sold pickup load of custom cues.
I make shafts.
I repair cues .
I also am starting to make cues .
And I own about 60k in cues.

I am not a expert, and I don't want to start off with me and you having issue with each other.

The average weight for the shafts I make and sale is between 3.6 to 3.8

I have seen 3.4 and some times a 4.0 .
The shafts on my Bobby Hunter Ivory ferrules is 4.0 and its a 60 in cue.

How long is your cue ?

Because I am having a very tough time believing that you have a 29 in shaft that weighs 4.8 OZ.
You happen to have a picture of the shaft on a scale .

Are you sure your scales are calibrated ?

When you weighed the shaft you didn't have the joint protectors on it.
And why on earth would you have two shaft for one butt with such a wide difference in weight ?

I have at least a dozen shafts that will fit on my main player, and I have 4 shafts that match my main player, none of them have over third of a ounce different in weight .....

So if you were me wouldn't question someone that said they had a 4.8 shaft ?

How much does yours weigh straight outta the bathtub?

I don't think I have seen anything close to 4.8 except for maybe a Dymondwood break shaft or weighted Masse shaft with a metal ferrule.

Standard maple shaft at 4.8 oz?

Yup...it begs for explanation.
