Cue value

An older friend of my mentioned that he thought it was about time to sell his cue.
Since He isn’t internet knowledgeable so I told him I would be glad to put it up on AZ when he’s ready. The cue is a 1951 Brunswick Wille Hoppe model. He has apparently been told its worth about a grand. I don’t have a clue as to its value myself so before I would proceed to put up for sale I would like to give him a realistic idea of it’s worth. Condition is good as far as I can tell, he still plays regularly with the cue. Thanks in advance for your input.

Should have mentioned that if he goes ahead with the sale I'll get pictures, at this time I'm more concerned with a possible range of values. If its to difficult without pic's I'll see what I can do.

A grand would be on the high side. I am no expert but I will try to sound like one:wink:. I have seen Hoppe cues go for a grand but that was a few years ago when money was flying. Generally for Titlist cues to bring this much they needed to be near 100% condition in the plastic sleeve and the original shipping tube. Even the shipping tube needed to be in good shape.

The other way they would be worth more is if they had documentation on a famous previous owner. A more realistic price for the average Hoppe would be in the $300 to $500 dollar range.

There is usually a few on Ebay and you can get a idea of the going rate.

If it's from 1951, it should have the ivory ring around the butt. In decent condition, all original, I would say about $500 in decent shape and $600 in excellent condition, give or take some from there. Most of them are rosewood prongs or something similar. If the points are ebony, then it will be worth around $1000.

The cue should have an original leather wrap, an original shaft (12mm tip), 57" long , and be structurally sound. The ivory butt ring will likely show some stress cracks, but will be intact. The decal should be mostly intact. The cue should be reasonably straight.

Here's a page from the 1952 catalog showing the Willie Hoppe Pro (click on it to get a larger picture):
