Cue wrap preference

I've dinged the Irish linen on a cue that I have, and am just curious about alternatives.
I don't mind Irish linen, I assume there's not a huge variety in type or brand beyond colours?
As for real leather/faux leather/or anything else - is there any preference regarding what works well, and why? (different hides or materials)
As for making it wrap-less, seems a lot of time, effort and money to do this to a cue?
There's quite a lot of nonsense tech in pool cues that I am pretty unfamiliar with, having played all cuesports with a one piece snooker cue for most of my life.
Any suggestions or images of what you use/prefer would be helpful.
Thanks!

There are no rules. What you play best with is the best. I like the feel of leather
So you go purely on how it feels?
I've only ever had a pool cue with Irish linen. Works fine. Maybe I will just stick with that.
Wasn't sure if even the Irish linen had different type or spec beyond colour.
Don't have any opportunity to touch/feel materials here, but can get all manner of interesting or exotic materials from Taobao.

There's so much consumerist branding/marketing in pool, kind of hard to remember the game can be played with a nicely crafted piece of wood lol I wasn't sure to what extent each material might offer a difference in playing. I am not a particularly sweaty individual, quite lazy and won't be looking to change it for some time. So dark linen might be the way.

A lot of people like cork.
interesting, will have a search and see how it looks. I can see why that would be an effective material for grip. As it seems somewhere in between preventing moisture, but allowing some slack needed for cueball control.

If you have a ding in the linen, and love the look of it, hate to lose it, and are okay with a wrapless feel, then perhaps having the linen covered over is an option. This is what the Meucci cues have. You get a wrapless feel and a wrapped look. I for one, like that look. If you wanted to pursue this, I would recommend the wizards at Proficient Billiards, this is a standard conversion offering for them.

interesting. I live in Shanghai, so maybe I can find somewhere locally that can offer this service. Wrapless feel would be nice, as bigger butts and material is something that took a little adjustment coming from a snooker background. (never thought I'd be complaining about 'big butts' but here I am haha

I always preferred linen or stacked leather, until I used a friend's wrap-less sneaky for a night. It felt really good, and made me reexamine other preferences I hadn't fully considered. I've since started using a couple of wrap-less P3's full time. I feel like I subconsciously grip the cue in a comfortable spot, rather than where the wrap suggests.

I also started experimenting with using various extensions full time. After I got used to the extra weight (and adjusted the cues to account for the difference), I found myself gripping the cue on the extension on different kinds of shots than I expected.

Through chance/circumstance, I've ended up with a couple of Mezz CP21 butts, and a couple of wavy shafts. Maybe I will eventually spring for an exceed, but really, I'm not the type to change equipment often, and I've got too much of this set-up to dip for something else. So unless I can amend these butts for the 'wrap less' feel, I probably won't. Someone mentioned coating the Irish linen, which is something I might look into if I can find it here in Shanghai.
I do feel that wrap less would feel more familiar/comfortable to me (even with the increased girth of a pool cue butt vs a snooker cue)

Extension on the end permanently bolted on seems bizarre to me, but I did see a few pros waltzing around with the XL vibe (interestingly, none of the ones I noticed are still doing that. Not sure if it's just a way to promote new things, or styles in a marketing sense, or whether it is about their game)

550 Paracord. That way , when the Pocky Lips comes , you will have a survival kit in your pool case.

I've never used a lacquered linen cue before, but coincidentally my first Meucci is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I've always thought it a curious practice, but I think it looks pretty cool!

There are wraps that are objectively lousy because they are slippery. You have to clamp your grip down to get any power. That's bad. In my experience rayon is the worst for this but twine and leather can be slippery depending on how they're maintained.

I prefer no wrap. The finish of the cue is sticky to my hand. I used to sweat but somewhere along the line that stopped.

With no wrap I can grip lightly and the cue doesn't slip.

The ultimate in reducing slip is the thin rubber sleeve that nearly every top carom player uses.

I agree with Bob about slippery wraps. I prefer either wrapless or leather. Both allow me to grip the cue lightly.

I have an old joss with a Cortland linen wrap, which is not too bad. But I have newer cue that came with an Irish linen wrap that was way too slippery. I ended up having it rewrapped with leather.

What do you mean by "dinged"? Is there a cut in the linen that is causing it to unravel? I am wondering if there is a way to repair it. A picture would be helpful

There is a notch that has become frayed, I can feel this in my hand when gripping the cue. Wouldn't be a problem for some, but fusspot that I am...

I think in the future I will spring for a wrap less cue. But now, given what I have, perhaps some form of leather would be the best option.
