Someone asked me what type of cue would I recommend for straight pool. Seems to me someone brought this up before but can't locate thread.

I know Schuler used to have a shorter thicker shaft for 14.1.

Other than that, any suggestions or ideas?

I can't imagine it would matter for 99.999% of the population. Our local house pro shoots with a whittled down Cuetech. He feels like he can be more precise with cue ball contact with a smaller diameter shaft. So maybe even thicker shafts aren't "better" for 14.1...

I would recommend whatever cue felt good in his hand, and had a good reputation for quality.

I shoot with a custom Bill McDaniel Q8, with a Old Growth shaft with a Kamui SS tip @ 13mm which has plenty of bite to it. which seems to me a bit stiffer than a standard maple shaft. the butt sleeve is pictured in my avatar to the left.

the cue has a Stainless Steel 5/16-14 pin, i like the SS joint i feel like it has a better follow through. i am not saying this is better or worse for 14.1, i just feel it plays better for me.

+1 on the Joss. Its what I used to play straight for 20 years, and I know Mike Siegal has many many runs over 100 with the Joss he used back in the day. I prefer a piloted steel joint and a 12.5mm tip with ivory ferrule. It gives lots of feel even when shooting softly, as that is what a lot of straight pool is about. Cues that are super lively and can throw the cue ball around the table are needed for the rotation games, but to confidently move the cue ball very precisely a few inches or a few feet is whats needed in 14.1. Then again I've never been a champion or big runner so take what I say with a grain of salt.
