cuemakers which tip personal cue

tips

Wide range of responses so far. Hope players on this forum are picking up new thoughts, ideas. One thing for cm,s, you put on a tip & dont like the hit, you cut it off and install another. As a player if we dont like the hit we pay a second time & keep our fingers crossed. Thanks to all who have taken the time to respond so far. You other cuemakers, lets chime in. What say ye ?

Kamui Black soft , Sniper, & Emerald. White Diamond for breaking

My tips are as custom as the cues. For me, boxes of tips are like wood or phenolic, simply a raw material. My personal cue gets the tip tuned just as intently as I tune the weight & balance or tone match the woods. That said, I play with a proprietary tip most often that is very hard. But I use all the basic brand tips & modify them accordingly. Rarely do I use layered tips because there is so little that can be done to "adjust" them.

I also like the types of tips I can modify. Soaking and pressing and treating tips are a science just as much as making the cues sometimes. Layered tips are what they are, no adjustments, not saying that is bad thing either.

Pressed LePro, use to use Moori med, Sniper, Everest, Triangle, and more, but I always go back to the LePro that I press as my bread and butter tip.

I shot with Moori Hard for 8-10 years, switched to Kamui SS, and emeralds. Samsara for breaking.

I fell in love with the Sniper the first time I put one on. I occasionally try something different, but I always end up putting a Sniper back on.

Like the title says. Which tip do you prefer on your personal playing pool cue ? I started with Moori mediums many (12) years ago. Presently use Wizard mediums. Understand milk duds are good. Would like to see the cuemakers preference. This could be an interesting thread if enough cuemakers respond. What say ye ? ? ?

What makes you so sure that cuemakers can afford a cue of their own?

Same thing as Bill mentioned for me. I have used a ton of different tips over the years both layered & non layered, and have different shafts with different tips on them, but since I first tried sniper, I keep going back to them on My main player shaft, because I get the most cue ball confidence & control out of them. Soaked and pressed triangles aren't too bad either, but I also make those from lepro and elkmasters as well. Many of My regulars like them. Premium layered tip customers are liking the Kamui since I started with those, and I'll probably try one of those for Myself, but I need to figure out which hardness is closest to a sniper.

On My break stick I have a purple heart shaft, phenolic ferrule, and I just use a super pro hard on that one.

i currently use a sniper and have for years......but i am contemplating throwing on an onyx....heard nothing but good things about them, maybe i will just wait till after vegas in 2 weeks to try it out

I'd also like to try one of those Oinks.
Are they made of pig skin?

I use every tip I install. Playing with an Emerald now and like it considerably.
No matter what, I seem to keep returning to one of my Duds on certain cues.

Talisman and Wizards are at the top of my list always as are Everest and Sniper.

Everest and Sniper. I believe these 2 will always remain to be main stays
in a repair mans tool box or a players cue.

El cheapo California 5 layer tips are a decent tip. For the money, you can't beat one of these. Pretty much maintenance free will last an average player quite some time. Supposed to be a medium but I'd put them much closer to a MH or H.

I use a Triangle on my McDermott. Took a little getting used to but also
is a great tip. Never be without a few in my box now.

I use Le Pros on a couple of old Brunswicks. Can't beat em if you get
a couple of good ones. Don't know too many that will ask for one as I can install a California in place of a Le Pro.
Same, I keep half a box around just in case.

I am going to change out the Emerald for a Super Pro and see what thats like for a playing tip.

Moori. Good tip but I can take em or leave em. I keep them around for the die hard Moori fans. I have others that last much longer with less maintenance. I can usually get a die hard to try either a Talisman or Wizard to replace a Moori.

Not impressed with Kamui browns. From what I have experienced, I can install several different brands of tips that play even or considerably better than the browns for much cheaper.

Kamui black. I will eventually get around to trying one but I won't beat anyones door down to get one.
What will most likely happen is that I use a black Sharpie on another tip and pretend I have a Kamui black.

I would happily pay Joe Barringer $13 per Onyx tip than pay the asking price for a Kamui black.

Ok Sherm let me rephrase that question. If you could afford to purchase a cue of your own, you being a cuemaker, which tip would you prefer on your personal playing cue ? Money is no object so buy the tip of your choice.

That's what I used back in the late 80's early 90's. They weren't easy to find around here back then, and everything was mail order, had no internet to find them, but I had a buddy that somehow always seemed to have a few on hand. It felt sorta like striking gold at the time.
