I know this has been covered a million times.

I'm always in the process of looking for new/better equipment.

So what are the "hot" / best new jump cues, break cues and jump/break cues right now.

I currently own the following break cues.

1. Varney jump/break with 2 shafts (one canvas resin tip laminated shaft and another phenolic regular shaft for 9-ball). Jumping with this cue using the one piece canvas resin tip is amazing
2. Predator BK2 - This is my current break cue
3. Hammerhead/panther wood pin jump break cue with the wood pin
4. A J&J classic butterfly cue with the original phenolic tip
5. A J&J jump/break cue with wrap (probably the worst I own)
6. A classic mace jump/break cue
7. A classic sledgehammer that is pending sale
8. Xbreaker

I own the following jump cues

1. Classic porcupine "rod" jump cue that is no longer tournament legal.
2. A Meucci jump cue that is effectively useless
3. Jacoby jump cue with phenolic tip (good but not even close the g10 tip version)
4. Jacoby jump cue with g10 tip (awesome)
5. Predator air - frankly I don't care for his cue that much but I keep it around because I think one day my mind will change.
6. An old custom jump cue that looks like a converted sneaky pete with a phenolic tip. This cue is basically useless

So basically what is the new equipment that is hot.

I've had the mezz powerbreak and the steve lomax cues on my radar for a while now. I keep hearing good things about both of these cues and would like to try them out. Any other recommendations out there?

You own all of these and you want more?

One word!

WOW!

Kenny Koo's jump breaks look really nice, i should have one in a couple of months. he uses a searing shaft on it.

andy gilbert makes a damn good jump break cue

Andy's j/b cues are known much more for being great players. Many purchase his j/b and end up playing with it. Since he uses standard Triangle tips on his j/b's, they aren't going to break or especially jump quite a well as other options. They are though without doubt top shelf quality cues.

all his J/B's come with searing shafts??? i've seen kenny's playing cue and i dug it but i didn't get a chance to see his j/b.

any chance you could post a pic for us?

Woodworth

Woody Woodworth makes a fantastic jump/break cue. I really like that he gives the option of lyptus shafts. Lyptus is a much harder wood (according to the janka rating) than maple and most all other woods used for shafts that I'm aware of.

yeah man i did the same thing. i bought a gilbert j/b from bigbusiness (az'r) and it played so good i put away my other gilbert to play with it exclusively until the tip compressed too much to play with (for me that is)

Sniper J/B works really well for me. I also think that there are a number of top pros using it too.

Pete Ohman makes a great jump break cue. the forearm is longer than most. When aiming, this is key and will give you an edge. Lots of jump cues hop full balls but provide little opportunity to aim with accuracy. The Omen has an advantage here and you will see it when you need it.

As a breaker, the cue is a terror. Plenty of power and yet the ability to control the cue ball. A great product. Pete will also match materials to your playing cue for a great looking set.

Here is one Pete made to match a Richard Black cue in my collection. You really should try an Omen!

I am to a Pete Ohman J/B owner and agree with your statements 100%. Pete's quality of construction, materials and finish is bar none, highly top self and this in a J/B that is under $400.

We can't keep the Fury Jump Break Cue in stock. At $179 there are many who consider it to be the best in class.

Best Break/Jump Cue

At 55 years old I have owned a few. I am currently playing with a Varney Break/Jump and couldn't be happier. Its the best Break/Jump cue I have ever owned.

I just got a J/B from Steve Lomax and to say I'm happy with it is an understatement. I've also owned a Fury J/B, J&J J/B and a Stratford sneaky pete and I've tried a Mezz J/B. If I were to put em in order I would go with:

1. Steve Lomax
2. J&J
3. Mezz
4. Stratford
5. Fury

I've used 5 total in my life

One was actually an Action that just played great, broke ok, jumped like a turd. I'm guessing the odds of finding another that played as well as it did are slim. Wish I would have bought it, the owner wasn't good enough to really tell the difference, and often scratched his head when I went to him first when I was cueless. Factoy tip.

A Gilbert. Broke decent, played well, and jumped decent. Better than ok in all specialties, but not really great at any of them. Original tip.

A Barkley (Joplin, MO), purple heart shaft. Played well, broke great, and jumped ok. Water buffalo tip.
-Same Barkley, maple shaft. Played ok, broke well (not great, but better than ok), jumped great. Canvas tip.

A Cuetec. Broke great, played like a turd, jumped ok. Factory tip.

A Gulassey (sp), original sledgehammer. Broke well, jumped well, can't really play with it. Original tip.

I'm sure that tip selection adds/detracts to/from playability. I abhor pure phenolic tips. They make it too hard for this "player" to get any resemblance of shape after a shot.

Disclaimer: These were individual cues and may or may not reflect the actual reputation of the "brand's" lot.

I've had my Varney for more than 2 1/2 years and am still very pleased with my purchase.

Others that people speak highly of include (but of course not limited to):
  • Rick Howard - Mace
  • Jerry Powers - Stinger
  • Mike Gulyassy - Sledgehammer
  • Andy Gilbert
  • Fury
  • J&J which is undoubtedly the best bang for the buck
  • Predator BK2
  • A lot of people liked the X-Breaker as well, but you'll have to look for a used one.

The trick is to find the one that suits YOU. There are many cue makers in the business that make a nice quality cue. Not every cue will be a good fit for each person, but I don't even look at J/B cues any more, I've found the one that will stay in my case.

Good Luck,
Craig

That's a sweet looking J/B cue you have. I like the wood combination and the inlays set it off nicely.
