They did the same thing in 2006, when Max and Thorsten played. Once the shot clock was in effect, both players made stupid errors the rest of the match.
However, I heard from many straight pool fans that they felt the match (pre-shot clock) was moving at an excruciatingly slow pace. Myself, I didn't mind. But even some die hard 14.1 fans can't stand to watch a snail's pace of a match, even between champions.
I know the finals were supposed to be played at 6pm. Maybe they're trying to finish this match so they still have time to finish up tonight. When this match is over, I'm sure there will be a break before the finals.
If the finals move just as slowly as the Feijen/VDB match, it'll go on until past midnight. Then they still have to do the closing ceremonies, etc. etc. etc.
I just can't believe they started play at noon and still aren't finished.
