Custom 30” shaft

I had my fun with the LD shafts. I have come full circle and once again playing with standard shaft. I just love the feel.

I am looking to upgrade from my current Schon shaft into something else.
I am looking for some recommendations of cue makers or in this case, shaft makers that could be recommended.

I am one sees the value in getting very good wood with high ring counts. I don’t want a whippy shaft or a stiff iron bar  I am looking for that happy medium between performance and feel.

I would be okay with a shaft that was between 13.25 mm down close to 12.75mm.

So in the end I am looking for a maker who has great finishing skills. Has shafts that are quality/high ring count and one that does or will build piloted 5/16 x 14 jointed shafts.

Steve Dunkel

Check out Steve Dunkel of 'Dunkel Custom Cues'. He is an AtoZ member. He can also be found on Facebook.

He takes a different approach to length. His standard size cue has both a 30 inch butt and a 30 inch shaft instead of just a longer shaft. This has great balance and avoids the whipish problems of just longer shafts. I have been using my Dunkel about 4 times a week since I've got it and I absolutely love it. He is a great guy and does quality work. I damaged my cue back in October and he had me send it back to him, right before Hurricane Sandy hit. He got it back to me very quickly in more than perfect condition. I cracked the finish. He ended up taking the wrap and all the finish off to fix a minor imperfection/damage somewhere else (that I didn't know about and probably never noticed), put a nice finish on with a new wrap and sent it back. It was also a nice surprise the way he protected it with a new custom cloth wrap.

EDIT: I just re-read your post that you are just looking for a shaft and not a whole cue. I am not sure if Steve does only shaft work, but I would personally recommend him for a whole cue if you are trying to avoid any whip problems. I was using a Schon also and I prefer using my Dunkel than just using a longer shaft.

Have you contacted Dave Jacoby yet?

Yes, I am aware of Jacoby but was looking for some other recommendations.
I hoping for some other recommendations.
Thanks.

I have had good success from Jim Buss and Mike Bender cues and shafts. Richard Black isn't a bad choice either.

Try Gulyassy. I shoot with a 30 inch (12.75mm) SPTX; it's got a 20 inch pro taper, but with the shaft freeze it isn't whippy at all--but has awesome action/feel. It's got good LD characteristics, but not hollow or laminated...it's solid maple through and through. He makes a ton of great shafts/specs, nobody knows more about performance and feel than Mike.

Just contact him and I'm sure he can square you away with what you're after.

I play with a John Bender Sunken Wood 31" shaft....

Think he still has some left...

absolutely love it..

I have a brand new taper that I named the SPX. It is slightly stiffer than the SPTX but still has my unique 18 inch no taper style. My finish will come out any number you would like for a good fit. The Schon is usually .836 but any number I will produce. I have some really good shafts ready to finish. Call me at 864-430-7797.

Diveney shaft

Pat Diveney is just finishing up my 3rd 30" Lakesalvage shaft. Very old sunken wood. He would probably make it in any reasonable diameter and shaft taper. He stays in touch and is easy to do business with. His work is very good and you will receive your product in this life time!

Tell Pat you know of some killer b-b-q and you might get a better deal. lol Great guy, super cues
