I'm really at a loss whether copying Falcon's butt taper makes the cue a custom cue or a copy.

And also alot of these cuemakers spend a great deal of time gearing and tweaking their machines to that "perfect" setting and the last thing they want to do is move it around for one job and then have to go back and recalibrate it all over again and this is simply NOT worth thier time !
Then you have a few TRUE custom cuemakers in every sense of the word who will build your cue exactly the way you want it, including butt diameters, length of cue, joint pin, playability, hit, tapers, feedback, etc....
I have zero problem replicating the exact physical dimensions of that cue all the way down to the playability of it !
It's not a problem for me at all becasue I set my machines up differently for every job so it's no big deal... I think my advantage is that since I currently have NO set dimensions or standardizations with my cuemaking due to custom tailoring processes, I do NOT have to worry about consistancy due to the fact that every cue is built differently and uniquely balanced to the customer's required physical attributes !
I have noticed in this market that we ALL have a place and there is plenty of room for ALL of us without stepping on toes, becasue each cuemaker has something appealing to offer that attracts certain players and creates a following and some cuemakers have something to offer that appeals to alot of players as well ! but we stay as busy as we want to and since this is the 21st century and with all the technological advances that have been introduced into the cuemaking world, I believe traditional thinking and approaches to this cuemaking industry is becoming antiquated as far as the "PLAYING CUE" market is concerned and the players have physically evolved and have outgrown the traditional cue "standards" and are requiring more than what the majority of the market is willing to provide, both custom and production...

Thank you, Tom & Eddie. You have stated your positions well. There clearly are two ends of the spectrum in terms of customability, but seemingly most of us fit somewhere into the "grey" area, neither here nor there. I can relate to both examples of a wheelchair & tall/short players. When I began building cues I was just that kind of builder, and built various style & dimensioned cues for various situations. Over time I locked down & tuned in to what seemed to be the "magic".
I'm sure we all have built cues that seemed "magical" in a sense, just something special. In my early days this was unpredictable & rare, but very cool when it happened. I realized that if I could harness this elusive magic & instill it into every cue, then i'd find sure success. So I began noting dimensions, materials, construction techniques, adhesives, etc. in these rare, seemingly magical cues. I found this magic once in an old Scruggs & old Mali, too, not just my own. Over a few years of notes & experimentation, I was able to begin honing in on the fine details that instilled the magic into the cues. As such, my cues nearly suddenly & dramatically became, unimaginably to me, superior to anything I had ever built before. Better yet, it was consistent, happening every time. But not only was it just one aspect that was giving "magic", I had learned all of the tricks in every area of the cue to collectively give "magic" to the entire cue. I found it was not magic at all, & was no longer a mystery. It was only knowledge & experience & an open mind for continuous learning.
In essence, I lost my desire to conform to the players' needs. If I deviate from my recipe then I lose my "magic". Any accomplished cuemaker can build a cue as structurally sound & accurate & clean as me, probably even better. But the "magic" I honed in on is what gives my cues their personality & sets them apart from the rest. So changing the recipe would be robbing my cues of their identity.
We all have our own magic. We use it in different ways, and sadly many don't know how to access it. My magic is my formula for a particular cue, no matter what color or design it may have. Some guys' magic is the ability & desire to offer infinite diversity, conforming fluidly to an individual player's desires. And some are just lost, searching for their identity, darting here & there like a fish swimming for cover. So neither good, nor bad, no best are any of us. We are the best to the players who love us most.
