Custom LD shafts?

I am going to save up some money for a new custom cue. I'd like a custom cue from a maker who offers there own LD shaft. What custom cuemakers offer a LD shaft? I'd probably be in the $1000 price range, is that enough to get a descent player? Also, what are the benefits of a steel, ivory....etc joints? Thanks

Lambros. I use his LD shaft and I'm in love with it.
 
most LD shafts come in a blank form so that cue builders can adapt them to there cues. so if you have an LD shaft you are more apt to use this would be the way to run. Last i looked on the ask a cue builder section on here
there were some builders working on no ferrule and LD shafts. you could ask there.

just off my head I know Cash cues offers a ferruleless LD shaft of their design, Joel Weinstock and I also offer them upon request (my daily player has my LD shaft design)

I can't speak for Cash cues but an LD option shaft on a entry level custom from either of us would start at 500 buckaroos.

Joel does his solid maple or can also use laminated blanks if the buyer perferred as such, I on the other hand choose to not build shafts out of laminated material unless its for a breaker or jump break combo cue.

The reason I don't like lamination is that over time the wood shrinks and the glue lines between layers can be felt......I just had to do refinish a meucci black dot shaft that was only 2 or 3 years old not but a month ago b/c of that problem.

That and theres not a place in the world to get a laminated blank made from high quality maple.........its all lower quality wood reinforced with glue........thats why alot of the aftermarket LD shafts have that somewhat hollow feeling and tone its not just hitting wood its hitting wood and a bunch of adhesive. Not that I think that the aftermarket LD shafts are bad products.......its just a means for the manufacturer to cut cost on material waste and effectively have a more consistent mass produced product.

imo that s not the holy gral of creating a LD-Shaft. Sure every cuemaker can do what you wrote. But there are several ways you can have a nice result without bore just a hole. I ve seen and tested meanwhile many shafts here- and there are still big differences between them. And i ve had also *non-laminated* shafts in my hand having a very low-deflection.
In my opinion some LD Shafts have really advantages-but the most players (non-pros or better saying no-high-lvl players) are cheering about their laminated shafts because of the action they re able to get with it-even without a good technique.
Furthermore in my opinion it s more difficult to creat a LD-Shaft/Laminated shaft which gives you a reproducable result. I ve had here 3 Shaft from a wellknown Brand coming up with a weight of 95 gramm, 110 and 118 gramms. And this is what is teasing me really- noone can tell me if he played a shaft with 118 gramm, then buys *the same shaft* again-and this then is *just* 95 gramm.....that he gets the same results. There are so many Laminated and LD shafts........but really quality is hard to find in this section- there are just 3-4 shafts where i could see a reproducable craftmenship which gives you also a reproducable and good product.

I for myself have not really a problem with low-deflection-this is just a problem of a bit experience and practice before you re feeling ok with your equipment. The LD-Shaft from Cash is excellent-- non-laminated LD shaft with excellent wood-quality. I have a shaft, built by a wellknown german cuemaker, with a special taper 12 mm diamater- with *half-cut*ivory ferrule. usualy ivory isn t really positive referring to low-deflection. But the results from my experience were superb.
In the next weeks i ll get 2 more ld-shafts (one is laminated) and then i ll test with some guys (before that solo myself) again.
Then i ll have my own expirience with about 8-9 LD + laminated shafts. it will take a while, but then i ll write my expiriences here down.


LD is not just about putting a hole into a shaft :)
