Cut down a new tip?

I'd say it depends on the tip diameter and hardness. I had a shaft that came with a really tall Triangle installed but it doesn't mushroom or anything so I didn't feel a need to take it down past the initial dome shaping. 20180714_204229.jpeg

Some good players think the smaller the better-More feel to your arm they say. Mike Davis use to use a tip, where the bottom of it barely, if at all, reached the outer edge of the ferrule.

Do any of you cut down a new single layer tip when its installed? If so, how much?

That is typically 2nd question I like to ask a customer after what hardness they want.

Personally, I remove (let's say) a 1/4 of the tip height initially and sometimes a little more once it gets some playing time and mushrooming in it.

On the 11.85 mm shafts, it can be even more removed; it's a visual thing while considering if it's a LD shaft and/or has a long or short ferrule.

Mine usually get cut about half way (at edge) from new. Only a fool would do anything other than .473" ;)

I am fine with da dawg duds staying their pre-installed height though.

I would use my It's George or Last 4 Ever, and being aggressive, take off leather until it looks "fresh", shaping it to a dime.

On my personal cues YES .. cut my Triangles down about 20% prior to shaping. They seem to be playing best to me when they are super packed and very short.

Have a good weekend,

I shape it but don't cut it down. It will eventually shrink through compression and chalking.

I don't cut mine down either. Why would somebody do that until they've played with the new tip for a while and see how it develops? I've had a lot more tips stay playable from the get-go than I have had tips deform/mushroom. As expensive as some layered tips are and the fact that many people have to pay someone for installation, why would they want a big chunk taken off their tip BEFORE they've even played a few racks with it?
Anyone with any knowledge of the workings of a good tip tool has the ability (or should anyway) to take a mil or two off of their tip. Why not just wait until it needs removed?

My feeling (no pun intended) is a new tip at full length is dead. So what I do is play it, shape and trim, play it, shape and trim till I get it where I want it. A full tip removes so much feeling that it seems unusable.

Never. A tip that is compressed through regular play is the best. Chopping or grinding it down immediately does not give that tip the chance to get that good.

Just shape it and play it, don't grind it down.

All the best,
