Cutting and shaping slate

I have a 3-piece set of 1" slates from a POS cheap table I bought on craigslist before I had a clue about pool tables. All that is left is the slate.

My wife wants table tops made out of it. Soooo...how hard is it to cut slate? What tools to use for straight and curved cuts? Can you grind/sand/shape edges? Can you cut it with a 1 hp bandsaw? Water cooling? Or what kind of local company might do this as part of their line of work?

Just call your local tile guy. Mine uses my old slate for shower seats in the corner I help him and he helps me

Heres what I did since you want to know, I got a call not knowing who the guy was. He wanted me to cover his GC with cloth he already had. I told him $250 and he is 1 hr away. He mentioned that he recommended me to others and I said thank you very much and told him I would take of 10% $25 for doing that. The usual conversation but then he asked me if I was going to glue it. bla bla but thats when I started to think the guy might be from AZ but he didn't offer that up to me until I asked in another email. It was all fine until he mentioned about him doing a few tables. Thats great but I start to think- he is AZ he lives in CT, he wants to be there. I ask him who set up his table and I determine 100% sure its not level so now Im thinking shit I have to fix that too before I recover and I dont want to share my method there. SO I think and then decline after we talk more but told him let me see what happens and I will get back to him in a couple of days for sure. I didnt refuse him, I even gave him a discount!


MY rule is to NEVER work in a home alone period, so that answers that

I have been watched start to finish 100's of time with no problem. I have never had a problem with a single customer on anything.

I show up on time or I give them a discount, its on my web page.

If they are not happy they dont have to pay.

I dont need to make a living from customers on AZ like some guys.

I have have more work than I want but I dont refuse. If I dont like the job I take the time to explain why.

My reputation is of no concern to me as I have nothing to worry about. I do what I say and say what I do.

Unlike the people who always "PICK ON ME"

Im sorry but I care and many of the people in this section know it. Do what you must. I will be good as long as Im not attacked. Your talking to the wrong guy again.. I dont make personal attacks as a norm but when I am attacked its a big joke.

Whats really funny to me is that the only people I have ever had a problem with are in this forum, why is that I wonder

John, I don't think you were personally attacked. I think a joke was made by one of your peers, and I honestly think in this instance you over-reacted. I could be wrong, but I took it as just a joke. If I had been in your shoes and he said the same thing, "Ouch, you got me on that one, HAHA!" I'm not saying there's not stuff on here lately that shouldn't just be laughed off, but I think this is an instance where you should just take a joke and not read so much personal into it. Not taking sides either way. If you had said the same thing about him, it would have been just as funny to me. Hell, you should have heard some of the stuff Don and I have said about him!!! LOL

Im sure I could find a good moderator for this fourm my buddies wife is a licensed daycare operator lol. I thought alot of this stuff was a bunch of joking and kidding but its not. to most of us it looks like John over reacted but these two dont get along and even small jokes feel like picking. why dont you guys stop all the shit and leave each other alone if you dont get along no more jokes and trash talking and no one cares who said something first from what I have seen everyone takes shots. You guys both do great work put your energy your wasting fighting into your work and turn out some great tables.
 
Because there's gonna be a new reality show coming that's why. I've been working on it and it will debut different mechs etc.

Not to get off topic, but yes you can cut and shape slate relatively easily. Most of it is pretty soft and can be carved or shaped or drilled without a problem. A friend of mine, Jim Leybold, owns The Cue Ball in Salem, OR and has mural on the wall of his pool room that is a completely carved one piece slate from a table. I'll post a pic sometime. You can buy diamond impregnated bits for Dremels and air grinders that cut it easily as well. We now rejoin our regularly scheduled pecker measuring contest already in progress.

John, I didn't attack you buddy...I cracked a joke to you. If you're really that upset at being made a little fun of....I'm sorry, didn't mean to hurt your feelings...OK, all better now? I don't dislike you John, in fact I'd even work some jobs with you if you needed my help...and more than likely wouldn't even charge you....if you'd be interested in learning a few things. We've met before, and got along great...so nothings changed on my part. And for what it's worth....I don't need any help to gang up on you, I'm big enough to do that all by myself....all I need is for you to print something funny...and I'll take it from there:grin:
