cutting ferrule? direction?

Hi guys,

When cutting ferrules down to shaft size, what is your preferred direction of cut? From Right to left? Or Left to Right?

Also, is an automatic feed necessary for nice smooth cuts?

That's how I do it and I use a large radiused tool and take a couple of passes on the final size.

I cut from the back of the ferrule to the front, as other posters have said at a nice slow speed. This way you can see exactly how much material to remove without finding out you have removed to much.:)

On ferrules I go left to right until I get so close to size, that I don't want to risk what manwon mentioned. From there I cut right to left. It allows me to bump in as close to the shaft as possible without gouging the wood. I do have to get the shaft running as true as possible beforehand for it to work well though. The truer the shaft runs out of My chuck, the less hand work I need to do to finish It. That is sometimes easier said then done depending on the shaft.;) :)

Thanks for the info guys! For those of you who prefer cutting left to right, do you use a radius tool or a left hand cutter? Are you able to blend the ferrule to the shaft this way?

I have installed them from right to left, however I have a difficult time blending the ferrule. It makes sense to go the other way, but I've never seen it done before and wanted to get others opinions.

When I cut from the back of the ferrule to the front, I use my normal cutting blade and I just back cut. It is also better sometimes to take the ferrule down a few thousands in size, this will make it easier to blend the ferrule and the wood.
