Cutting Square Round Todds CNC

Here is what I don't get

I guess we all have our reasons for making cues. In life or in work if I do not enjoy it, I don't do it.

One of the biggest kicks I get/got was I would split an order of wood with another Cue Maker. We would put all the wood upright, flip a coin for first pick and the entire day would be eaten up choosing each piece of wood.

To me there is a big differance in first glance and looking at end grains and hoping what each piece will be when cut down.

To not cut from square to round would take much of the fun out of it. You turn the Router and lathe off and you get your first view of what you really have. I have cut beauts down only to find I cut away what I thought would be awesome. I have cut down throw away to find hidden gold in the piece.

There almost is no truly bad wood. Your mind races to think of another piece that would highly compliment it like a jig saw puzzle.

This to me is where the fun is and why I elected to come back to making cues during retirement.

You take this thrill of the chase away it becomes work. I have just become my own Co Sponcer of the UltraSkinLayered Cue tips 9 Ball open where the winner will look through all the in progress cuts and design the Cue he/she wants. If no one ever buys another of my cues I will keep building, as long as its fun. I highly doubt anyone will pay my asking price so I may end up being able to play Pool everyday with a different cue I built.

If I owned one of the big fast cutting machines I would just go ahead and get in the wood selling biz. My problem there is I would not have the heart to sell the sweet pieces.

If you think I am crazy I have at least three Doctors and 50 people that would agree with you in writing. One shoe does not fitt all feet so I hope for whatever reason you build it makes you happy, there is no wrong reason.

Well between yesterday afternoon when I bought this baby and now I got what the ER doctor last night identified as a REALLY bad gal bladder attack.
Probably too much lasagna.
The doctors are talking about knives and other unpleasant things, so I'm going to incur a little down-time. Great.
So to prevent Randy from puking, I'm letting him have the pleasure of dragging it home. I really wanted it too, but he may as well be making chips while I'm recovering.
This latest development truly sucks but I'll get over it. Grrrrr....
These machines are still made and parts are available...looks like someone got a good buy.
Next time.....

Wow !!! What an awesome and kind gesture, I'm sure Randy appreciates it. Best of luck IF you have to have surgery and I hope the road to recovery is a quick one.

Wow, take care of yourself.

Thank you for your kindness. I will probably take it to Lobo, which is about 30 mins away from the pick up site, and see what it needs.

Regardless of how it turns out, I thank you again...

That is a nice gesture Robin.
I have a lump/cyst in my Gall bladder so its coming out one of these days too.
I also know what an attack feels like. I eat a plate of greasy onion rings and I'm in big trouble.

Randy- That was exactly my plan, too: to take it straight to Lobo and get what it needs. For that kind of dough, I figured I couldn't go too far wrong. All the big expensive chunks are there.

The way I was feeling I didn't want to get too far from home, let alone juggle a big hunk of iron, so I'm glad it worked out for you.
Plus, I know you can't run too far with it.

When you move this thing, don't forget The Lathe Incident.

This gallbladder thing really caught me by surprise. When it came on I thought it was THE BIG ONE. Pretty scary. I'm absurdly healthy but I guess I'm also getting a little creaky in my old age.

Damn! Life without lasagna. Unthinkable!

Greg- I've seen two doctors and gotten 3 plans of action. Figures. What to do? Who knows? Nothing for now, but I'd just as soon get the nasty thing out of there on my own schedule, on my own terms.

The lathe incident....yes.......

Spoke with Lobo and they didn't seem concerned with being able to get it going.

Hopefully it'll be running for less than a grand.

It is yours to use whenever you get the chance to make it to Ventura...

Cross your fingers and get well SOON.

I'm a little sick that I didn't catch this until after it sold.

Drove 1.5 hours to get it, took 5 minutes to load. Went straight to Lobo(35 miles.....2 more hours). They spent 4 hours fixing it, replacing all electricals(on/off, forward/off/reverse feed, e-stop, the contactor circuit inside).

It works fine and I bought a new set of knives while I was there. It came with the 1" cutter head, which was one that I wanted. New heads are 290.00 each....I'll probably get one a tad over 3/4 in the near future.

With gas and trailer rental(2 days because I spent so much time in City of Industry I couldn't return it before they closed) right around 1000.00 total.
