CW, defending, and other quips

Back in the old days all we had was our word, deals were done on handshakes and your word once it was shot, well it was shot.

CW got thrashed about pretty good on here, and something came to mind numerous times. Why no explanation to the players from the site, the fans, and the people who without their support there would be no pool.

Maybe he is going by the old let them talk theory, since none of it's true it can't hurt me. But by for the most part his silence it does hurt and in my old mind tells me a lot about the validity of the accusations being unfurled.

So he choose to let it die out and go to the Mosconi cup, but lookie here he failed as a captain in most everyone's opinion.

I heard Darryl Hall say something on an interview the other day which makes me think of CW. He said in not so many words that he doesn't like music at all, hates it, and only does it to pay the bills. Why does he hate it, because he was brought up around it and that's all he did so because it was that way it was never pleasurable to him. Every time we hear about CW it's money, to promote some world championship he's having, maybe the guy just doesn't like the game anymore, but only views it as a business dealing.

Is he going to be able to keep remaining silent about all these issues, what appears to be double sided stances on issues for when it benefits him, the girls, the citizenship. Or is this the last ride for you the person as far as support for CW?

The players will have to support him, I think he knows this. He puts up some money and that's what players need. But you the casual player who helps fill out tournament spots for a chance at taking down a champ (or a qualifier) you the sports enthusiast who loves the game, or you the historian who just wants to keep the game going.

I was very much in favor of letting Charlie be given a chance to prove himself as US Mosconi Cup team captain. But I have to say that he achieved very little in inspiring his team .
That said, he had a hard job on his hands as the psyche of the US pool pro players is vastly different to the mind set of their opponents. Once again they were a bunch of individuals, still looking out for Number One.

It looked like the captain tried to enforce some discipline but it was largely ignored.
So where does the buck stop. There is no higher authority to back him if he needed support.

Someone needs to grasp the nettle and set out a program that would interest Matchroom. It needs commitment and building on Shane and 'Chaine. Draft some young blood in and forget about winning it next yesr. But target 2013 with a Young and Hungry squad. Tell Brandon Shuff and see how he would react to that.

MG get out of that chair and put those nettle resistant gloves on.
 
It would be proper for Charlie to apologize for his remarks, but it's entirely up to him whether to do so, and I'll respect whatever decision he makes. Of course, if he did, Europe, in their always classy manner, would say that his apology was totally unnecessary, but the game's fans and patrons would know better than to believe it.

In a year in which American amateurs, fans and promoters alike have been disenfranchised by the organizing bodies of American pro pool, they've been given yet another reason not to look up to the stars of American pool.

We can only hope that as few would-be fans of our game as possible were viewing the Mosconi Cup live or on stream when Charlie opted to make his ungracious comments in defeat. I doubt many would-be fans would say "Yeah, I wanna be like that one day, a loser whose first instinct is to compalin about my luck." Let's hope would-be fans and patrons tuned in just as Johan, Europe's coach, commented that the reason that the victory meant so much to Team Europe was the undeniable strength and pedigree of the American side. Now that's how it's done!

It doesn't get much worse than losing and then publicly showing disrespect for your opponent's accomplishment.

It was more or less the way he said it. I could sort of wrap my head around what he was trying to say, it just came out... whiny.

I guess I expected a more professional statement to come from him. Especially for someone with his credentials (versus players that have no idea how to talk to anyone in the media).
"My team didn't make many mistakes, but when they did, the Europeans were there to capitalize on them", "As much as I support my team and wanted us to win my first year as coach, I have to give tremendous respect to Team Europe for such an incredible display of gamesmanship" or something along those lines.

"You guys got all the rolls" came across (to me) like a kid pouting about getting beat in a bicycle race or a snowball fight.
 
Ok, everyone on the US team knows that Team Europe got the rolls, everyone on the european team knows that they got the rolls, everyone watching on tv or at the event knows they got the rolls. Therefore just let it go and lose with a little class. The speach should have gone like this. "They played great and we just didn't didn't play as good as we wanted to this time, congratulations but we will be back next year" Anything but blaming anything at all.

Also from watching the stream I saw that CW seemed to be in front of any camera that got close to him and if it wasn't close to him he found his way toward it. Fast forward to the final day and unless Matchroom had made him do the interviews or speaches you would have hid away from the camera its like he went MIA from publicity. May have been calling Korea to see if they needed a coach. Fairweather friend it seemed like to me. Even wore a sports jacket over his USA Team shirt most of the time. If I were him I would be wearing it proudly and not covering it up, Just me though and all this is just my opinion I am sure I am on my own with this and what I noticed.

Disclaimer: I don't know Charlie Williams, I didn't watch the Mosconi Cup (yet), and didn't see Charlie's interview after the US lost.

IMO, it was a huge disservice to Charlie to make him Captain of Team USA. You really need a living legend/Hall of Famer type for this, someone that every member of the team would respect (or even idolize) based on their record. Charlie's a good pro, but I'm not seeing an election to the HOF any time soon. Most of our players have more experience (some MUCH more) and many more titles under their belt. Age is an issue as well. I just think it's hard in any sport for seasoned veterans to give a young coach the depth of respect that's necessary for a team to be successful.

I think it's hard to argue based on the results that choosing CW as Captain was a mistake, and regardless how much he either did or didn't affect USA's play, fans are going to place much of the blame for our loss at Charlie's feet. This assignment (IMO) was a no-win situation for Charlie.

On another note, I think Dennis Hatch would have made a big impact on this contest, not just from his play on the table, but his infectious cheerleader attitude.

Here, here!!! We do need new blood for Team USA. I don't necessarily care if they're actually young in years, as long as they're fresh to this contest and will represent us well (in all aspects). Without regard to rankings or any other of the current criteria for Mosconi Cup selection, here's what I would like to see our team made of:

Captain candidates - Johnny Archer, Mike Sigel, Allen Hopkins, Buddy Hall, Kim Davenport.

Players:

M. Dechaine
SVB
Corey Deuel
Dennis Hatch

5th player is tough because we have at least a handful of candidates that would be great. My favorites:

Rodney Morris
Stevie Moore
Jeremy Sossei

And this is the problem in the US with pro players today. You can't even find 5 top picks for the cup. Ten years ago you could rattle off 20 top US players that would give any country a hard time. Will the last pro stading please turn off the light. Johnnyt
