Dale Perry cue, bear with me....

Is it so hard to figure out that my question was addressing the fact that you said you were poor and still had owned cues worth thousands of dollars?

I understand the non-traditional student and their ages. It just made me wonder when someone says they are poor and have had all these expensive cues.

And if you were an 18 year college student then subtracting 4--let's see if you can do this (as a self-proclaimed math wiz) could that put someone in middle school? Hence my question--Duh!

I was just wondering!!

KP

Financial situations change. I never owned all at one time, I was constantly wheeling and dealing. The most custom cues I ever owned at one time was two, when I had a Capone and a Southwest. As far as the age thing.....when I was 14, I was a freshman in high school, and turned 15 during the year. Sophmore year 15, turned 16. Junior Year, 16, turned 17. Senior year, 17, turned 18. That was the case for 95% of my class. Doesn't take a math wiz, just takes addition. High school is still 4 years long as far as I know.

As a youngster I knew another lad that was one heckuva trader. He started one day out with a cheap old pocketknife and at the end of the day owned a nice milk cow.

And he didn't live too far from Springfield. :D

I've owned several Dale Perry's, many of which I just bought for someone else that wanted one. Quality seems to be a big variable but mostly okay. The one I used myself for a few months was sold to player in Springfield. I never had a single problem with the cue (aside from changing the tip) but he has suffered nightmares with it. First the butt sleeve broke off right at the ring below the wrap. That revealed some very pithy wood had been used to join that butt sleeve to the handle and that very little glue had been used. The ferrule wasn't put on centered properly and he managed to pop it off. He had those things fixed by a local maker and that maker said it was one of the poorest assembled cues he had ever seen. Most recently the owner of that cue noticed the forearm had split on both sides beneath the joint sleeve. I don't think he's going to have it fixed again.

All of that very likely isn't the fault of the cue maker, but some of it surely is.

And still, if I had no cue and little money I would strongly consider a DP based upon my own experience.

I totally believe everything you've said. I have now shot with the Perry for 3 nights straight, each night at Dennis' Place. I'm shooting lights out with it. I only hope the more fancy one is as well built and well hitting as this one is.

I have a Dale Perry also and it would be hard to find a comparable cue for the price...especially one made in the USA.

I've talked to Dale several times and I have no complaints about him. Actually, he gave me a few pointers on what I needed to do when refinishing a Titlist cue I had purchased. I wasn't getting the cue converted by him, yet he was nice enough to give me information without me having to ask him.

So far, I would agree.

If you can get a DP for $100-$150 you got a good cue. They do play well. Some hold up better than others. I have a few. The rings are falling apart on 1. The shaft nicks too easily on the next and the other one is holding up very well. I also have a higher end DP from 2000. It rocks. It is my player. Well made. Beautifully designed. Dale is not the master when it comes to customer service.

Please explain to me how you can be a poor college student and still own all these high-end cues at different times?? And 4 years ago you regret selling your Scruggs? Were you in Middle School then?

Just Wondering...KP

You can be 83 and on your death bed right now and get a student loan, it's the next great bubble to burst. Only debt you can declare bankruptcy on either...wonder why:rolleyes:.

I've seen these cues on ebay and thought they looked nice, good to hear some feedback from folks who own them.

At the 2010 ''Hopkin's SBE'' , I was somehow seated at the same table with the likes of Bill Schick, Tony S [from that ,,,oh yeah,,,''Black Boar company out somewehere in MD. , Mike Bender, Roy ,The late great Wilie Jopling and Dale Perry,,,,,How I got at that table to this day I don't know,,,,

Anyway,,,with the drinks flowing and the party starting,,,annecdotes turned toward cuemakers doing work on ''Celebritie's cues"",,,

Bill Schick related a story of his crafting a new cue each Christmas for ''Eddie Taylor'',,,and then Dale picked up on the story of him being approached to make a shaft for ''Eddie Taylor's , prized 1961 ''Rambow'',,,[ By the way,,the Eddie Taylor interview is in One Pocket.org about Eddie and his cues are mentioned },,,,Dale had us all in hysterics [ Like I said,,the ''beverages'' were plentiful, about how nervous he was to handle, let alone spin that ''sucker in the lathe,,,,after all,,,it was Eddie's all time favorite cue, his 1961 ''Rambow'',,,,,Now What if I spun it and it went ''POOF'',,,???

Man,,,,funniest line EVER from a cue maker that I heard,,,I'm trying to think of the pool room owner from the Fla, [ Tampa area I think] that owned the cue at the time,,,,,,,very Jewish last name,,,,,,,,Man,,,,,I know someone out there knows it,,,,,It'll come to me,, but what a great annecdote,, By the way,,,Willie Jopling was a story telling machine as well,,,,I miss him,,,,,but anyway,,, yeah,,Dale's a funny guy and a great craftsman,,,,,If he's good enough for ''Eddie Taylor's '' Rambow,,,,that speaks volumes on his work,,,,,,

What a funny ass night,,,,,I gotta post pictures of it,,,,,,!!

The phenomenon also exists with shoes and bicycles: get new ones and you are fast!

I've owned 2 ebay dale perry cues. They do play very well there is no getting by that. I bought them cuz I needed to see for myself. One played very very well the other didnt seem to hit the same and felt crappy to me. I decided to cut it apart. I noticed a lot of plastic and epoxy filler but thats to be expected at the price point. Under the stainless sleeve at the joint resides a cheap piece of crappy plastic. My "ebony points" were certainly not ebony but plastic....that being said they play as good and in some cases better than quite a few higher priced customs. If you dont care about materials in your cue I say buy one. Great playing cue...possibly the best player in that price range. I dont believe for a second that only he and one other guy build them as there are 10 plus on ebay at any given time but whatever. I do however feel sorry for the people who paid him huge money a while back as they took a big shot to the pooper.

Pulled up this old post for you from last DP discussion...

I agree here.... Even though most people on here knock DP....

My buddy is pretty good friends with Dale... Been trying to get me to switch over from predator for the last decade... He gave me one for my birthday with a ld dp-r shaft... Anyway, my original w2w sneaky pete predator player is now my break cue.... Before I picked up the DP, all I could play with was predator... Pretty smooth transition for me with that shaft that he makes....

Here's a vid of me playin the ghost w my new dp w/dpr shaft....

How do they compare in terms of deflection?

Wow, you dissected one>>>
That's pretty scary.
You may be the only person to ever cue apart a Dale Perry cue.
I would like to cut apart an old one and compare the construction.
Then we can take the best of both vintages and copy it...

Keep in mind....the one that got cut up was somewhere in the ballpark of $150.00 give or take....i'm sure you'll find less plastic in his older cues.

Did it make any odd screams when you cut into it?
I would of cut it up in a haunted house on Halloween night, and put the video on Youtube.

Seriously, I've played with a couple of newer Dale Perry cues, and they played pretty good after a little modification.
I owned one several years ago that played well.
It looked like a sneaky pete, but it was a short spliced cue.
1 of 1, and it came with a certificate of authenticity.

I think Dale is doing pool a needed access....supplying good cues for good money. You can not beat the quality for the price. As a matter of fact i think he gives more than your moneys worth...JMHO. Not everyone can afford a 500.00-1500.00 cue.

Got my older, more fancy Dale Perry.......

And I love it!!! Plays amazing, just as good as the one I bought on the Bay last week. Soooooo now, i'll be selling the cue I've been raving about!! The more fancy Perry cue came with one of his LD shafts, and a Predator. The Perry I bought from Dale on Ebay has his "Stage IV" shaft. Honestly I love all three shafts, and can't decide which one to sell with the butt. Here are some pics of the cue for sale now. I'm kinda leaning towards selling it with one of the LD shafts, because they play so similar. I'd be looking for around $275 Paypal Gift, due to the extra value of the LD shafts. Thanks for looking!!
