Danny D

Finally, Youtube is allowing me to upload longer videos.

I have a bunch of Danny Diliberto lessons through the years. I feel like a pest continually announcing them, but Danny is a gem and his lessons are pretty good.

You feel like a pest?

Bug me, I don't mind. Really.

Thank you very much for sharing them.

Thanks very much for the additional videos. I enjoyed the first immensely, and when I heard Danny say you were going to come back after lunch for 3 more hours of lesson -- I thought, where the hell is that!

Already learned a few key ideas from the first one, looking forward to these.

When he would come to Chicago, I would try to book back to back to back lessons for him. Some guys would take an hour some two. One guy took 4 hours when his buddy cancelled and there was an opening.

Danny would usually do 7 or 8 hours of lessons in a day. Illinois Billiard Club and Red Shoes mainly in the Chicago area.

Dennis I have to assume, for the record, that DD has no problem with these lessons being made public? I think it is good advertising myself, but I don't think everybody agrees with that.

Just wondering...

please never feel like a pest! we all FULLY enjoy these!

(I'm still getting through the first one, its no good without sound and I cant use "sound" while watching video at work :D Also, not trying to be demanding and not sure if you already do this or not, but I would benefit if you somehow put the year that each was made. That way I could watch them in the same order that you took them --- as well as see the progression of your game, which is also interesting)

Dan:

This is an old question. I think Steve Lipsky brought it up some years ago.

I suppose I should expect to have to repeat myself to every new group of players but I am really starting to get tired of all this nonsense...

I may do what Blackjack did. Exit stage left.

Dennis:

I mean no offense by this, and I'm only offering what I'm about to say as more of a reminder of why certain people are continually bringing this question up.

I think the issue is more a question of courtesy, than it is a legal one. I know, those students who agreed to have their lessons filmed with Danny DiLiberto didn't sign a legally-binding non-disclosure agreement, and therefore, legally, the content is free to do with as the filmer pleases. However, I think those folks offering you this question are more in tune with the courtesy and ethics side of the question, rather than the legal one. (You obviously "have the nuts" when it comes to the legal question. Also, having Danny's permission, although good, is less of an issue than permission from the student. Danny's a public figure afterall, and would have less of a reason to be concerned about being exposed to the public/Internet at large than the student.)

Humbly (if you don't my saying so), I think the best thing to do going forward, when you post these student/lesson videos, is to put a small blurb in the thread that you have the permission of the student being filmed to post it. Folks would surely be less likely to hit you with these "annoying" questions then.

Thoughts?

P.S.: you should know that your video contributions are always appreciated, even if there's a question about the way in which they're posted.

On further consideration, maybe it is best not to overreact.

My thought is unless you are in the video you should keep quiet. He wasn't secretly filming it, if those being filmed had a problem they would have asked him not to film it.

Interesting.

I had a YouTube vid go viral on me last year. I got several offers from Google to join their Google AdSense and get paid for viewings I receive. The only thing they were concerned about is whether or not I owned the rights to the video (I don't), and not whether the persons in the video gave permission to be filmed. If I lied about it and got caught, Google would cancel my contract with AdSense. I have no idea how much dough I am losing, the video in question has had almost 700,000 hits so far.

Of course, that didn't stop Colbert or Tosh from just grabbing a segment of the video (freestyle canoeing) to spoof on their shows. I was contacted by several other small-time reality shows for permission, but the heavy hitters just take what they want and use it without permission at all. Pays to have a staff of lawyers on retainer.

FWIW I think I owe DD at least $50 for viewing these lessons. I learned a lot already. Keep 'em coming, Dennis. ;)

As the person who brought all this up in the first place, I just wanted to respond with my original thinking.

I watched a couple of the videos but wondered during that time whether I am stealing from a guy's lesson or not. Intellectually, I knew you are an attorney and spend a great deal of time doing videos and hobnobing with guys like DD, so I KNEW you must have had an OK to show the video. Emotionally, though, I know of plenty of instances where it is not OK to post videos. I was going to PM you just to settle the issue in my mind 100%, but then realized that if I had the question, then others surely did. That prompted me to publicly post the innocuous (I thought) question about showing the videos. I expected either no reply, or a simple, "Yeah, Danny's OK with it."

Apparently, there is some bad blood on this subject I was unaware of, so feel like I stepped in a pile of manure. I'm glad you decided to keep posting these videos, but I won't be surprised if this issue comes up again in the future. (But definitely not from me!)

Now I'm off to go clean my shoes.

You and I both! (Cleaning our shoes, that is.)

As mentioned in another thread, in my normal "trying to be helpful" manner, I tried to offer Dennis an explanation for why he's continually seeing these questions pop up, and I myself wasn't cognizant of how sensitive this topic is. I ended up stepping in the same pile of poo that you did.

Anyway, I'm glad that Dennis is uploading more!

Apologies for my involvement in this,
-Sean
