Danny Harriman is a threat in any event he enters, and it was no different when he showed up at the Maryland State 14.1 Championships the weekend of June 19-20. Hosted by Big Daddy Billiards in Glen Burnie, MD, the tournament brought out some of the toughest straight pool players in the world, but Harriman was the one in the winner’s circle at the end of it all.
The tournament format was a round robin with seven groups of five players each vying for the title. Two players from each group with the best records and two wild cards that were decided by Ball Differential were then moved into the second day. Day one action saw some incredible play—and some incredible upsets. It seemed as though each match was a tough one because of the caliber of the field, which included top pros such as defending champion Harriman, Thorsten Hohmann, Bobby Hunter, Shaun Wilkie, Steve Lipsky, and Danny Barouty.
When it came down to the final four, though, it was Harriman versus Hohmann and Wilkie versus Mike Dechaine. Harriman appeared to come alive, snapping off the win and the tournament high run with a methodical 119 early on in the match. Hohmann could do nothing but watch as his chances slowly but surely slipped away. Wilkie faced a tough opponent in Dechaine as well but played fearlessly. His play bordered on reckless endangerment, firing balls out of the stack at 90 miles an hour from 8 feet uptable. Dechaine played very well; however, it was not enough to take down Wilkie as the finals were set.

The finals saw Harriman take on Wilkie in an epic match. Wilkie took a commanding lead early on, making the score a staggering 96-1. But Harriman was not intimidated, and he went on a massive run to take the lead and then the match. Both players showed a lot of heart, as the tournament was a grueling two days of some of the fiercest straight pool competition around.
