Danny Harriman & World Straight Pool Championships

I believe Grady said that if he had to go qualifiy, the cost was prohibitive. If he is spared from the qualifier and extended a direct invite, he saves all the extra expenses (hotel, etc...)

I'm excited to hear aout Danny H. getting an invite. Especially on a tight table like at the DCC last year. He might even be the favorite to win.

Can spectators tape matches at the event?

The alternate list should have been made public early on so all could see that there was no favoritism.
If I had had to qualify and it took me three times, it would have cost me about $5,000 to play in the tournament, with second place being only $6,000. At this late juncture if I received an invite I wouldn't have time to to practice properly as I've been playing only 8 Ball. Of course I love 14.1 so much I might go anyway but I hate the way the UPA is doing things.
As far as the IPT goes my wife and I had a talk before I knew I was one of the 150. We decided that I'd have to try to qualify if I didn't get selected. At least there's a big payday at the end if a player is successful. Now as to the equipment, no tournament should have huge pockets, period. My 14.1 events have always had tough pockets and there has always been multiple 100 ball runs.

The World 14.1 Championships, is not a UPA (sanctioned) event...................

It is Dragon Promotions.

ME too ...

To any and all that interceded on Danny's behalf, I commend you. Danny is a good guy and a great player and ambassador for our sport. His participation will make this a more notable event.

Grady, IMO, should not be questionable for an invite, he should have one ... period. His name has ALWAYS been associated with Straight Pool as a great player, and his endless promotion of it. Not having a 'Professor' there would be shameless ...

Randy, the two players I know that Charlie called didn't ask to be on the alternate list. They were also called before Danny's invite. Doesn't that mean that Danny and I come after who didn't even apply to play?

It makes no sence in the least why Grady wouldnt just be there. Someone who has laid the road for productions like this should not be on an "alternate list". This is what I hate about pool. Situations like this are sick.

I don't know much about the big tournament circuit, and who should or shouldn't be invited. I met Danny about a year ago as he was passing through New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina. Very classy guy. He makes no bones about being good and did not try to hustle anyone. He wanted to play pool, period. There aren't many pros out there who act the same, IMO. Most will act like they never hit a ball before if you don't recognize them, and will hustle you out of whatever they can.

I think one thing that is slowly going away from the game is outright integrity. I watched a young kid play in a tournament last week, and at hill-hill he called a foul on himself and lost the tournament. His opponent didn't catch the foul. Several guys nearby laughed at him for doing it, implying that they would never call a foul on themselves when money were on the line.

This is the kind of player I want promoting the sport.

I agree - if you have to cheat to win or not be honest in the game you just suck period, at pool and as a person.
