Darren Appleton vs Earl Strickland on 4 pocket Diamond table

SVB beat Earl almost always. He lost one long race playing on a gaffy 10 foot table, yes, but I don't think the table was why he lost. So why did Shane lose?

a) Earl played like God. Can't take that away from him.

b) Earl had a long cue and could reach everything comfortably. SVB was often stretching and it clearly caused him difficulty.

c) Earl set some kind of a new record for *****ing, moaning and sharking that match. It was really something else, even by Earl standards.

As for the 4-pocket table, Daz should excel. His cue ball control is absurd. I would say the only way Earl wins is if the race is long and Daz loses focus.

Shane's statement after the match was that he couldn't beat Earl on that table.

Shane's statement after the match was that he couldn't beat Earl on that table.

Yup, classy statement by Shane as usual. But since then, Shane has switched to a longer cue and played more regularly on ten foot tables (and played well). If they rematched, even on that same table, my money would be on Shane.

Yeah, pretty sad that the only way Earl wins any more challenge matches is if its a gaff.

In 10 years, i see Earl as the white version of Deathball/Troy...

Eric

I don't want to sound condescending to any AZBers, but in 10 years I see most people on here in the forums still trying to become an APA 4 or 5.

People who bash Earl are usually people who are jealous of his abilities or knowledge. Everyone gets older and their bodies and minds deteriorate to some degree. However, there are some people who never had or never will have the minds or knowledge to have once experienced GREATNESS.

Very well said!!

I'm not bashing Earl. I just know when a game is one sided, even with the gimmicked table.

Personally, I don't see this as a gimmick like the way the table played in Earl vs SVB. This is a quality Diamond table and they are trying something new/interesting. Why so much negativity? I think it shows a lot of ignorance to spew so much hate towards something that has never been done. If this match turns out to be entertaining, what will you say then? At worst you get to watch a player in his prime (Darren). The glass isn't always half empty, folks!

Certainly no offense taken. I guess I should be happy that we get to see anybody holding a cue playing anything these days. I just can't figure what the point of these gaff games are though. They've even come up with a two pocketed table for onepocket. I guess its all good in theory, but the reality is that players 'round the nation have damn few tables to play on and what remain seem to be moving to bar boxes. At least those have 6 pockets, lol.

I suppose that some here would like to have a dedicated table for each game, all with their own specs. Its just that its utterly impractical and cost prohibitive to implement. Hell, we live in a world where each table in each pool hall is libel to play differently.

I guess beggars can't be choosers. End of rant.

first of all.....they didn't come up with a 2 pocket table for one pocket. There are less than a dozen of them in the US, and not sure about europe.....all are in Joplin, Misourri and I forget what place in Colorado....I'm not even sure if the place in Misourri is even still there after the tornadoes destroyed the town handful of years ago.

Anyways. Those tables with only the two end corner pockets at the foot....they are called CORNERS tables, and that game PREDATES ONEPOCKET by a good many years.

And i'm slightly positive that I have seen very old pictures of tables preturn of century 1800's....that only had the 4 corner pockets i could be dreaming that.....but i dont think I am.

Remember the game originally didn't even have pockets, it was all billiard style, then pocket billiards was invented. So its HIGHLY likely that some of the original designs were just corner pocketed, and then possibly some were built again in late 1800's....i know I've never seen one in person like the Corners tables, but like I said, nearly certain they existed very very long ago.

And with all those 7fts out there.....maybe it would force all those APA players to get some lessons, pay attention to what they are doing more on the table when playing/practicing than they do to their alcohol, and calling fouls when someone doesn't mark a pocket lol.

Like I believe 9 ball especially on the BB is a very piss poor game......without the side pockets it would be better game, you would have to move and think more instead of just drilling in by number...use some objective reasoning for a change lol

So it's different, so what!!

It's pool, being played by two excellent players.
No side pockets should make it a different kind of challenge for the players.
Should change the way the spectators analyze the shots.
Looks to me like there just playing the game on a different style table.

Doesn't make sense to me to that anyone would be unhappy that a challenge has been made and accepted & now we have a match.

Best thing is, i can be there to watch it.
Under a two hour drive from where i live.

Even an APA 1 can see clearly that Strickland is a flaming a-hole. Now get off his nuts.

Said the guy who's probably never met Earl, much less competed against him or know him for that matter.

Thats just a wild guess....but everyone I know that knows him including myself thats spent more time with him than one would a one night stand....agrees that Earl sure is a firey competitor, misunderstood genius....and one hell of a nice guy.

The game has been watered down since Earl was a kid with leagues and even equipment changes, and most of the stuff he talks about or *****es about isn't by any means a bad idea.

Jump cues, fast as hell cloth, 7ft tables, leagues dumbing down the players as its only an MLM...its not about pool lol ,shot clocks being shorter.....LARGER tables in the pro game.

10ft was standard championship size when greenleaf was playing....

If anything Earl is to pool what John Mcenroe is/was to tennis.......outspoken, heart on his sleeve champion of the old school, whos not afraid to voice his opinion.....much less when some shit birds in the crowds at the mosconi cups start in and they are allowed to do it.

You ever hear about Earl being a liar, theif or cheat? You know how many past and present top players fit those 3 words perfectly? Earl doesn't. Earls a champion who cares about the sanctity of the game for the past and future generations....thats him boiled down in a nutshell.

He's a little out there, but that doesn't make him an asshole, no more than I'm an asshole for trying to help out a bunch of local 4 speeds that think i'm fuking nuts.

Your wild guess would be wrong. Have met in person and seen him play numerous times in person. He is flaming a-hole. If you want to be an apologist for the guy go right ahead but don't try to act like it is anything other than that. He isn't misunderstood, he is clearly understood and recognized my most to just be an a-hole and embarrassment to the game nowadays. And I couldn't care less if he warms up to you after to getting to know him for awhile, not after he is an ass from the get go.

Regards.

IMHO, Earl still has a "better" stroke than Darren. Playing without side pockets requires a lot more up and down movement of the cue ball than a table with 6 pockets. I'm not saying Earl will win, but I'm not counting him out just yet.

I'm really excited to see how this goes and how the lack of side pockets changes the difficulty factor.

In a standard game I'd give Daz the advantage, no doubt, but this is something Earl's been thinking about and wanting for a while and I won't count him out of this one. I think he'll be more mentally prepared to play on this table because the idea of it has been dancing around in his head for so long now.

I also don't find this table gimmicky. I find the idea interesting as a way to add difficulty without fundamentally changing the game. To me, corner pockets just make sense....side pockets seem less naturally obvious.

Nah been around him for long time here and there at venues/tourneys. Always was a nice fella when I was around, matter of fact I distinctly remember once someone doing lots of shit talking so he could hear it from the rail....dude never flinched or said anything back and I was shocked to say the least.

I tell you whats really embarassing, top pool players not having much besides their game....the johnnys, shanes and earls taking care of their cash is pretty amazingly rare.....thats embarassing. Why you think sponsors shy away so much from the game? Golfers gamble their asses off......but they aint one trick ponies often times either and can balance a check book like they can run out.

So lets everyone keep fussing about earl while we have past world champions stealing from people.....and other awesome stuff like that no one ever really yaks about. Just ride Earl till he's dead then maybe we can start talking about all the other shit everyones always muff about.

Like someone said not very long ago to me in conversation...."many of the pros dont even deserve to have a tour, they may be professional calibur players but their day to day actions and lifestyles would get them thrown out of many other professional sports"

i agreed totally

at the end of the day though you and some others just dont know "why" earl is like he is sometimes.....and its not worth my time to even try and explain it....because your responce will be "thats bullshit"

hell with it I can't ever not help "trying" and i hate being misunderstood too

I'm going to give you an example of my life, not everywhere....mainly just here in this area I live in....its where i grew up. Though i was never exposed to pool outside my uncles and friends house untill i went to Louisiana School for Math Science and the Arts where they also had a table, and a few 9 fts on the college campus we all lived on. Then college at same place and bars and such.

The town and area i went to school in had tournaments every night of the week...besides laying asphalt as a college student that kept strong money in my pocket, I was pretty good even back then and basically won everything under the sun and beat everyone....i would not go to the same event the next week, but that was ok because some nights there was two tournaments in diff places in the 50 mile radius.....generally 8 ball races to one, with the old normal bar rules.

Some things went down, I didn't get in any kind of trouble....just had something pretty painful happen to me and I didn't want to be there anymore nor run for the college distance team any longer.

I moved to Tulsa, Ok. I had met Richard Pierce, Shane McMinn and Gabe Owens (few months b/f gabe snapped off US open) whom were all down from T-town for the event in Memphis.....along with Lisa Marr whos as nice a person as she is a player (little rock local, former wpba touring member)....i learned to play golf there on the 10ft snooker table from some kid, he comes back 30 min later to see me spear in a spot shot at warp and I ask "hey you wanna play that game this is cool" uhhh nah i'm good man (jesus i was dense back then lol).....then get in action with Bobby Pickle, Nick Vita and Ronnie Allen.....Earl is watching with his shooting glasses, finger extensions and ass weights. I had just turned 18 a couple months before. My best friend at the time who was a tall bean pole around mid 30's came along with, his name was Mark....we both had long hair and rocked the facial hair.

Some how we got nicknames in our local haunts....he was "Jesus" i was "john the baptist" lmfao......everyone in that town supported me and LOVED watching me kick ass...especially when the shreveport and alexandria fellas strolled in and I'd get a call on my cell ( i had just gotten it when i graduated, felt like a pimp lmfao...like 14 years ago)

any who.....i drew b/f ronnie.....we played with the hickie ball and calling hooked didn't exist. and 50 and 5 game/hickie pay.

I won the first game just over 250, and had ronnie.....ronnie f*kn allen paying his ass off in hickies. Again DENSE unassuming kid....i got piss....they draw. I come back....I'm after Ronnie now.....so what do I do?

I beat their butts again, and shot this one bank that had everyone including Earl saying "holy chit" and then my CB touched the hickie ball lol BUT STILL that was my favorite bank i ever made to this day it was basically a reverse cut twist back that had to shift only a couple inches....i hit it like I'm Cole Dickson or something and I didn't even know who the hell that was at the time.

Less than a year later I moved to Tulsa. Could have busted me the day I walked in. Richard Pierce brought me up to the Tulsa Billiards Palace and told me to just go practice in the back no one would screw with me.

I would practice the spot shot on the snooker table or shoot straight ins cata corner full length and scratch b/h the ball......for unhuman lengths of time ( i always had lots of stanima coming from running 100 miles a week for some years.

I'd play in their 7 and under tournaments back then and started snapping them off pretty much from day one....didn't take long till i was a Tulsa 8....they go to 10 there and the 10's were Shane McMinn, Brian Jones, Greg Hogue, Tyler Strawn, David Strawn, Jim McDermott, Mike Betts, Joel Weinstock, Gabe Owens, Andy Freedhoffman.....a ton of top level players....and lets not forget all my friends from OKC....James Walden, Chip Compton, Joey Gray......plus all the 9 speeds and champions that would pass through town.

Few months maybe just weeks ( cant really remember) but i was waiting on a whale to finish his one pocket match, so i could ask him to play....he said no and I had waited all friggin day for him to get done. Undeterred I asked his opponent if he wanted to play some 300$ one hole even up....I had a barrel and some change.

I won either the first 9 or 11 games in a row....i just know it was more than 7 and less than 13 and it was an odd number. The palace never closed. I played that guy for about 3 days.....he was full on chemical warfare against a kid with worn out running shoes with a back log of tens of thousands of miles......yup no matter his help, we were playing pretty even after about 2 days lmfao. Eating salads and drinking a bud here and there but mostly Peach Snapple tea lol.

At one point it physically and mentally was torturing me, didnt know if i wanted to lay down and cry like a lil girl or if I wanted to just quit....but i knew i couldn't quit winner being thousands of dollars ahead ( no one knew i only had 300 lmfao) so i finally ask the guy...."man I cant barely stand no more, i cant barely see no more....i'm not about to just give you all your money back, I just worked so hard for....but i know I cant just quit ya....if you give the cash to the house man, I'll sleep under this table right here for about 5 hours and we can get back after it....I know what your doing, its no secret, I really dont care to be truthful.....

Of all the phrases and outcomes he could have said, I never would have thought of the one he chose.

"kid, I aint never seen no one just do what you been doing (looks at his watch) for 3 days now.....you earned this cash....tell you what lets play 3 more games and we can just quit.

I nearly kissed that bastard. Lost the next 2, won the last and paid out lttle over 600 in table time....walked out with a stack of hundreds so thick I thought I was cornbread red back in Detroit or some shit. Had never held that much money, or worked so hard in my life.....that half marathon PR i got of 1:15:47 was a flat out joke compared to that match.

I ended up apprenticing for many years in a custom cue shop, everyone I knew treated me like family, not some stranger with a weird accent who grew up close to the bayou and still got rocks b/t my toes from my childhood lol.

They saw me work my ass off, respected it....it paid off many many times, and I became part of the family not tjust in Tulsa but OKC too....even after I had moved home and startted the oil field many years later, I was just a helper for a while and Brent "the sniper" snyder....james old road buddy got me a bus ticket because work was slow....i showed up broke and James and he put me in a tournment in OKC and i won a couple hundred.....they didn't even want the steak back, and Brent put me to work for afew weeks with his painting business......

lots of the locals in the state just called me Louisiana...the ones that knew me called me Keeb, or Johnny because it pissed me off when people butchered my name, played quite a few tournaments as "johnny"....most didn't think my name was my real name anyways lol.

From the weakest players all the way up to Gabe and David Matlock when he would come to town, we all played together, pushed one another, taught one another new tricks and such....while trying to dig each others heart out with a cue. It was totally EPIC......and how I dreamed it would be and how it always SHOULD be.....

The Palace closed down with the new no smoking laws, the IPT failed.....and I just thought man....i love this game but I think its best to go get a good paying job so i can have a picket fence one day...work hard enough at the job and find a way to keep working my game and you never know kiddo....

so I did.

Moved back to South Louisiana. No one knew me, as I had left 4 days after i graduated, never went out b/f i graduated b/c i was too young and too busy making grades and running.

I show up with a tool bag full of knowledge, within a year I had met my best student I ever had....complete beginner and I swear we pegged each other first sight at one another...."you look like someone who wants to learn to play well BAD BAD" "you look and talk like someone that knows what they are talking about".......and hell I did, i was already a good player then went to sharp shooting school in Tulsa and got many many a private lesson too i'm not afraid to say and worked my skinny ass off.

Well he gobbled everything up. I would go offshore and he had mastered a set of drills....wanted more....and so that continued for 1.5 years. He then joins league....off the dump, two year points champ and league MVP...then had a kid and did the right thing and kind of left that behind....well he didn't leave anything, its in his blood and bones and the boy could lose his eyesight and still be a solid player.

People around here just thought i was weird....then I'm not sure if its my confidence or lack of putting up with peoples bullshit or their rudness and fixation on ignorance and talking about learning but never doing anything of the sort.

I go around and I'm always giving out helpful hints to the few friends i Have here, and the strangers too.....donthave to know you to offer you a helpful hint.....thats how people did me, and it helped me shine....humm couldnt hurt.

Last saturday night a fellow offshore worker got interested in playin league (oh and by and by I've never played league in my life...thats probably why Dusty learned to play so well i taught him big track pool and only to be a head hunter and that it....no slouch or lemon ever...becuase the killers and world beaters are just hours away)

guy comes two hours for me to work with him because he remembered me talking offshore showing guys some alignment techniques.....got video equipment set up and we were doing our thing....visiting one another and getting some learn on.

about an hour and a half in some random woman i dont know askes to play with us....i politely refused.....then came all the bullshit....i'm an asshole, I couldn't beat her anyways....bartender chimes in because apparantly the unknown to me woman was her friend (whole time my buddy thinks i do know them and i'm playing a joke on him).....

then a termite I once had pity on and showed how to move a cue in a straight line....but never stopped hitting the balls at warp speed, or learned anyting much else so he's still a Tulsa 5++ not one ball better than he was 5 years agolol.....i rate everything in Tulsa terms, as its what i know best in this game....and everywhere we went in a long ways we always got bumped up notches higher out of town in rated events lol.....but for good reason.

told yall i could talk, type whatever lol....bear with it it will make sense at end

Well ding dong starts in about playing....says some pretty lame 5speed leage crap, i told him he should buy a clue if he had any money....i turned to walk back to the table and he gets up says "no one talks to me like that".....he swung and BARELY caught the side of my mouth from behind.....like grazed me and I bit my dam lip....

instead of breaking my cue over his head....for whatever reason....i just busted out laughing in his face....because any non idiot of a man would have snapped my jaw with a easy hook and floored my little ass from behind me like that......and clueless couldn't get it done with basically a free shot.

Now the whole punch thing doesn't really happen in the pool halls here for most part.....it definately does at the bars which is why i stay out of there and always refuse when friends wnat to "go hustle"

but that mindset.....im the asshole.....for giving private lessons and not wanting to shoot with you nor let you shoot on our table....its just my problem and they are perfect like they are.....

it drives me completely up the wall....i've been *****ed at for bringing my own CB....was told my a former Fast Eddies manager i was not allowed to bring my CB much less my set of balls even if theirs do come from walmart more than likely....CB is smaller than their balls for christ sake.....he got fired so i can now lol....

wether i'm quiet and minding my own got dam business.....their attitude in general NEVER ceases to amaze, depress and make me come off like an asshole sometimes.....because I'm always in defensive mode around here.

When I first moved back from Oregon couple years ago I did have a breath of fresh air.....

black guy meets me....comes straight at me.

"hey your the greyghost right?" We never met but we got a mutual friend....i didn't know who you were at the time, and watched your videos few years ago....they were really good and I told my best friend Dusty how good they were an asked if he had seen them.

He said of course he saw them, because Dusty was my best friend and little brother I helped to learn to gallop in a year and a half.

Shit, he gained confidence he never had, learned what working hard was too to attain a goal....which he will tell you helped him to be a really good machinist and father as well.

Earl gets similar shit as well....and its super hard for me to handle and have even a decent attitude around it.... i mean at one time I was a pretty respected member on this forum and helped the living shit out of some people before more traveling and a ton of work on the water....and i sure didn't do it then and dont do it now for my health....i enjoy it, i love it...if you want to better yourself, others helped me to get there....i feel like its kind of my job.

being around that kind of ignorance and bullshit....especially when your one of the two greatest players in the world in the past 30+ years, much less legendary all time, gave heart and soul....won many world championships.....

I'm not condoning his bad actions and antics.....understand them at times, yes. But I've seen the man without the cloud over his head many many many times and its always been a pleasure....just like Dusty and Alex see me.

i can see a man like that getting a little cynical and angry, even when he shouldn't be....shit i'm just a keeb doing what a keeb can and it gets to me too and quite often at that....he'll even i had to "incorporate things into my training routine that got me back in touch with the game" lmfao....inside joke, yall should get it.

if you can find the meaning in the discipline what it takes to play this game at a high level, you may find meaning and discipline in another silly past time....

Life,
-Greyghost

ps.....i hate telling crap like this....i'd rather just plug only the good stuff....its just the truth and it applies, and maybe a bunch of you will say "make no nevermind grey....follow the path".....just dont like negativity of any kind mostly.....i work offshore but I dont watch COPS lol....so please always be open to learning new things, and always be honest with at least yourself on your abilities, this transfers over to the rest of your life by force of habit. The other way....well I see why lots of the folks that dont do these things struggle in life like they do.:sorry:
