Here is a Davis blank starting it's jouney through the clearcoat process. It is for a fellow AZer and will get a black leather wrap,has a 3/8-10 steel pin, and 2 shafts. Few more coats to go!
The colors in the veneers are nice I think.

Is that the cue your building for Howardthedick? I saw some of your work in Vegas and saw nothing but quality.
I know how scary it can be makng the transaction from hobby to full time builder. Keep up the good work.
 
Davis blank conversions seem to all play great-imo.
This looks like a very nice one, especially the veneer colors.
 
Thanx guys. Glad to see others are seeing my work out and about. Yes, This is Mr. Howards cue and is coming along nicely I think. The veneers are bright, and the wood is a good flow. Appreciate all the kind words and will post more pics upom completion.

That is one of my favorite veneer combinations and that orange really pops out at you.
Lovely looking cue and cannot wait to see the finished product.

I know, but I don't think he would cut off a full splice would he? I mean the cue in the pic looks like a full splice that was cut, I have never seen a traditional shortie that had the veneers together at the base. That is why I am asking.

I'd sleeve a handle ( .875 hole ) if it had a warp.
 
Yes, the handle was removed and replaced. In order to add the matching ring above the handle and get the desired look, it had to be done in this way to achieve it. It is as all my customs are and attatched below the forerm into the handle. Makes for a very nice solid hit as well.
 
For a quick moment...I thought those were maple points into an ebony forearm. Unique look. Although not the case...I still love it. Love the veneer combination.

Just to make myself clear, I was asking because one of the attractions to Davis blanks is the full splice "hit". Knowing hit is subjective and I am sure your joint is solid, so I am just asking.

Joe, The "shorties" I was referring to are the full splice variety. Envision the blank before he splices the front to the Maple handle with the modified butterfly joint. The point wood extends about 4 - 5 inches below where the veneers meet. I have seen 3 of these type Davis full splice "shorties" , very different from the v grooved type. I was wrong in assuming that the blank shown here was one of them. I will try and get a pic of the blank I am describing for you to see.

actually Jim this isn't quite true......i was told a story that George Balabushka once got a request to add one of his rings at the base of the splice while still retaining the full splice integrity. he did it and did it FLAWLESSLY! he machined the ring in two parts and assembled them around the spice. it came out so nice that the "seem" was close to undetectable..........allot of work for a ring!........
