DCC - AZB Room Monitoring

It's the Shannon Room.
That is the very room our HOF dinner was in last year. I believe I have a panaramic photo taken by Dennis Cox last year. If you know where to look, you can pick out Mark Griffin, Ronnie Allen, Efren Reyes, Mike Lebron, Bugs, Piggy Banks, Willie Jopling, Harry Platis, The Beard...

Well that gives the Shannon Room good vibes as far as I'm concerned :)

We squeezed 45 people in for dinner last year. This year's dinner is in a much bigger room at the Inn -- supposed to accomodate 100.

I'm not 100% sure... but......

When I last spoke to Greg, (2 weeks ago) he said we may also be getting the Bagpipe room as a gathering place. No extra charge was the last I heard.

Contrary to what i thought as a kid and what i see some people still think- Louisville IS NOT IN THE SOUTH! From what i can tell, it has to be north of Canada somewhere.
LMAO, I've never been to Louisville but I have heard that it's really, really cold there during Derby.

I just looked at the weather map and right now it's in the 60's.
By the end of this week it will drop to high 30's - it'll feel just like home!!

T-girl,
I remember driving home last year in a freaking blizzard; I felt like I was in the Iditarod.

Anyway, 2 pages of replies, only 2 volunteers so far - I think we need about 13 more pages of chatter to fill the slots.

It's supposed to be snowing here on Fri which is when I'm supposed to fly out. I would expect nothing less than the 30's... cold weather has always had a knack for following me.

The weather there typically sucks during DCC. 2 years ago I left about 9:00 Sun morning in a freezing rain thinking that I could get out of dodge before it got bad. I drove carefully and made it to Lexington where the ice was getting worse than I thought. Long story short, after a totaled Explorer and a long tow ride home I decided that ice storms were not to be f**ked with. Live and learn. :(

I posted at an earlier time

I will help fill in some time when I find out about my match times or do relief off and on during the week. I'm getting read to explode waiting for Thursday to get here. Sam

I could be wrong but from the mostly vague stories i have heard, i have a feeling it is mostly self muggings. It's been so friggin cold every year when you do go outside, no one is out there.

Nostroke,

You're dead on. Stories about people being mugged in their room or in an elevator are just plain bunk...didn't happen! There was an elderly gentleman robbed in the back parking lot 2 years ago, and any exposed cue without a vigilant eye on it IS a likely target, as they have been in the past. Everybody should know cue theft is always a possibility. For years we played in the Moose Lodge (an older, philanthropic, fraternal organization) International Pool Tournament, and every year someone's cue walked off. Outside of these, all robberies have been with a pool cue.

Yeah you cannot cajole, compromise or reason with Ice. Ice is your boss-no question. At least you learned that lesson without gettin hurt.

Many people were snowbound that year. I was fortunate to get out of town (by plane) monday night after one or two flight cancellations.

Last year early in the week someone threw a bucket of ice out the back door. I dont remember it ever melting. Mint Julep my ass!!

IronDon55,
Many thanks. One free brewski on me for being the first volunteer. See you at DCC.

In another vein, I would like to make sure that the monitors will go out of there way to try to make any pro's dropping in feel welcome. I'm going to try to have some refreshments there (no telling how long they'll last though), I hope monitor's will offer some to the pro's (just soda though, couldn't get around the age verification requirements to distribute alcohol).
Williebetmore,
You are welcome.
I should be in late Friday afternoon and will stop in for orientation:)

Weather? This will be my 4th year and I have yet to go outside except to and from the airport -- and oh, yeah, once or twice to help bring something in or out to someone's car in the parking lot. That's it. Why would you go outside? Maybe fresh air :)

Timberly, in an effort to be comfortable, I would advise you to bring sweaters or anything else that would keep you warm in the hallways. Warm socks is another good thing to have.

I did not go to the Derby City Classic last year, but the year before, we made the 10-1/2-hour trek to Louisville, and upon arrival, it was absolutely FREEZING.

The main lobby of the Executive West Hotel is huge and spacious, with comfortable seating. However, the main entranceway to the lobby has sliding doors which open and shut 24/7. Because of this, the FREEZING cold air is continually pumped into the main lobby area and hallways on the ground level which is where all of the festivities are located.

I remember hanging out at main action room, right next to the bar area, wearing a winter coat, and I was still FREEZING. The security guards and other staff were also wearing winter coats while traversing the hallways. I will NEVER forget how cold I was.

Even though you are inside the hotel, there are some areas which don't seem to capture the heat. So, word to the wise, bring plenty of sweaters, warm socks, capes, vests, fleece jackets, or whatever you need to keep you warm.

I know you are going to have a good time there, especially if you stay warm. Here's a cute pic taken at the 2004 DCC of a bundled-up Keith with the flu, Harry Platis from Washington State, and Jose Parica standing in the main lobby area of the hotel. BRRR, I get cold just thinking about it! :o

Jam you and Keith going to the DCC this year?

Hi, Gunn_Slinger! Nope, we're not going to the DCC, second year in a row, sad to say, for a variety of reasons.

I do like the Derby City Classic very much, and it is great pool celebration. The entry fees are affordable, and I think the buy-backs make it kind of nice for players of all caliber. There's a little something in Louisville for everybody, and I would recommend it highly for those who haven't been.

It is nice to have everything under one roof, so to speak, and for those diehard action railbirds and players, my best advice is to get plenty of SLEEP before you go because there is something going on 24/7. I remember thinking one year to myself, here it is 2:00 a.m. in the morning, and the hallways are packed full of tournament-goers.

I can't imagine the logistics that are involved in putting something of this magnitude together. Greg Sullivan, et al., should be commended because the DCC is the BIGGEST pool extravaganza in existence, and it is growing each year.

I sure do hope those of you who do make it to Louisville will be kind of enough to post updates and action reports on this forum for those of us not able to attend.

Here's a cute shot of a smiling Efren and Keith taken at the 2004 DCC.

I'll try to monitor whenever possible, but I'm just not sure what times at this point. Will Semperfi's booth be open all the time if no one else has the key?

Sami-,
I have NO IDEA what we'll do with the key yet. I should be interesting to see. If no one wants to monitor, semperfi will just keep the key; and the room will be closed until he comes back. If it's Wed to Sat he could leave it in my room, and anyone who wants it can just call, and come up and get it (believe me, I'm used to being called while I'm sleeping).

Do you suppose the Executive West would be opposed to us having a sign on the door saying who has the key in the event the door is closed?

Mike Maloney (semperfi) has his booth (#6) real close to the entrance to the AZ/OP Room. Last year he was there from about 9am til 10pm.
Very nice fellow - And if williebetmore gives him a list of paid members, I'm sure he won't mind giving out a key.
If a member has the key and wants to leave and give it to another member, there should be somewhere to record who has the key now, etc.
