DCC - AZB room - ??Next Year?? - ??Special Event??

Count me in. I'm sure $50 is no problem. I just have to not eat for 2 days. Just kidding. I wouldn't miss this unless a full blown emergency keeps me from coming down there. Looking forward to next year. Sam

I also would suggest setting up some types of fund raisers for this if having a room and promoting pool is going to be a yearly event for the
group. Maybe Tshirts or an auction.

I have great idea for an auction. I know WBM, Timberly and I was talking about taking the banner that the "celebs" signed and put it up for auction. What do you guys think about having the auction and the proceeds going toward next years "AZ DCC room"? I also like the Tshirt idea Frank! The "t's" could have the banner from this years DCC but we could put 07' on it. Just a thought;)

Somebody else mentioned bringing a cooler for drinks. Do you guys think it would be possible to have a full service bar? If we could get the ok from the manager at the venue, we could have a bar and comp "celebs" drinks and charge a minimal price for others. We could take the "profits" and put towards the 08'DCC or split it with the players that play in our exibitions. I think it would definitely show a touch of class that was not at this years DCC.(the bar, I know their was plenty of class there as you guys are a classy bunch)

I think this was brought up

I think the hotel had a problem with us serving alcohol in the room. Now if each of us brought a 6-pack cooler and just offered visiting pro's a beer or soda from personal stock, that may work. Sam

Although I don't post here all that much, You can count me in as well. I was a little disapointed I had to cancel this this year. Would have been my first trip to the DCC.
Alot of good ideas listed here so far but I kind of like the idea of donating the money raised to a childrens charity of some sort. What better way to show the non-pool playing folk what kind of people really play this game we all love so much.
Just my 2 cents - FWIW

I had mentioned about getting a keg and the hotel said no. I carried my cooler in there a couple of times and shared beer with people. No harm, no foul in that. We could get a couple of cheap styrofoam coolers and set them up in there along with soda's for the non-drinkers.

Count me, and OnePocket.org in general in as well. I thought the cross-pollination that took place between AZ & 1Porg was pretty good for the room, the guests and the attendees as well, and I look forward to doing this again.

I notice you mention 'winner stays on the table' challenges, and I am in agreement that would work perfectly fine. We could have the incoming player and the player holding the table flip to determine the choice of game, or even let the incoming player choose the game outright if we want to make it harder for one player to dominate the table for long stretches. Hell if someone is good enough to hold the table in that kind of all-around format, they deserve to hold it.

Can you elaborate a little on your JS comment? Who thinks there would not be enough money and how much did he think?

I would love to see the 14.1 event and think Alex and John would be great.
I think it would be nice to try and set up something ...
Are the above matchups the "mini tournaments" you mentioned?

I also would suggest setting up some types of fund raisers... Maybe Tshirts or an auction.

I also would like to see the auction for the doubles return. In advance if we could lineup Efren and another top player... Partcipants could be announced before the derby.

There was talk of sponsorship and I would vote to keep it AZ groupies if possible. .

Frank,
Thanks for your support. We raised about $1900 this year, I thought $2500 next year would be no problem. One thousand for the table, maybe $1500 (split $1000/$500 for the pro's) would be easily done (realistically we could probably raise a lot more). John S. thought it would take at least $2,000/$1000 to convince Alex P. to play - I think that's a little much (though possible - it would leave us short in other areas). I got the impression that Efren would play for free pizza if Jeanette asks him the right way (somewhat kidding, I did mention the $1500 prize and he was agreeable).

As for "other" matchups, they would have to be specifically approved by Pat Fleming. He has approved only the Efren rotation match and the Schmidt-Pagulayan 14.1 match (which seems very unlikely to come off). He would DEFINITELY want something extra-special to warrant a very late night for his already overworked staff. I think he is NOT anxious to do it unless it is special in some way.

The mini-tournaments I mentioned are the nighttime, bar table tournaments for amateurs. Greg and Mark want the DCC to have LOTS of activities for the amateurs.

I DEFINITELY would like to do the doubles again; but realize it is a big favor from the pro's; and most have trouble committing more than a day in advance - its a BUSY DANG WEEK for them. I think it would be hard to line up 2 top players in advance - but if you can do it let me know. It will be pretty hard to top Efren and Jeanette (remember most of the show was Jeanette's performance as "master sharker"), but if you have ideas, let me know. I think it would be difficult to announce winners before the event - how would anyone know it wouldn't be rigged? Especially since I'll buy a lot of tickets again.

The auction of the banner will start soon, proceeds will go towards next years room.

You have a lot of good ideas, stay in touch.

I'm in. I was only there few a few days but enjoyed being able to stop at the room for an hour or so thru out the day to sit, play, meet some new people ,learn a bit on the table and relax.

DCC in 07

I wasn't able to make it this year, but fully plan on being there after reading everybodies stories. Count me in for $50.

I personally enjoyed the AZB room at the DCC enough that I would like to do it again next year (though there will need to be some minor changes/improvements). If there isn't enough interest here, I will do it myself and invite all my friends (and there are a bunch of new ones from the AZB room this year:) ).

I am hoping we can get 2 tables in the same room. One for play as we did this year; one for drop-ins, pro challenges, tournament warm-up, and "winner stays" low stakes challenge table. There will have to be someone in charge that can deal with the tournament and hotel management; and must be responsible for dispute resolution in the room (I think Timberly would be great - I'll do it if no one else is foolish enough to volunteer). The room WILL be non-smoking (at hotel's insistence).

In speaking with Greg Sullivan and Mark Griffin they would VERY much like us to sponsor a mini-tournament or "special event." It is possible that they may be more liberal in allowing us sponsorship, so financially it may be feasible. We have spoken of sponsoring a Schmidt-Pagulayan 14.1 re-match or a rotation match of Efren vs. a top player (Pat has NO rotation matches in his catalog). I have spoken to Pat Fleming and he is willing to tape the match; Efren is willing to compete for whatever prize money we raise (if we choose the rotation match) - he just likes to play pool. John Schmidt thinks it might take more money than we can raise to get a Schmidt-Pagulayan re-match.

In any case, by doing this; we would be promoting the sport, helping Greg and Mark make the DCC even more of a spectacular event, and in part repaying them for allowing us to be part of the "scene". We could definitely set aside an "all-AZB section" at the television table and all be part of the history of the game, recorded on DVD for posterity. We could have a little post-match mixer with the pro's in the AZB room. We could even help pick Efren's opponent (who can beat him at rotation???).

It MIGHT not cost us much if any extra (we may get a better deal on the tables and the room as a result), and we can raffle off the AZB banner to help defray our costs. I think if we got minimum 70 and maximum 100 members to donate $25 - $50 we could do it. Do we want to promote or just sit back and leech????

Do we want to limit players to 100? We had about 70 players this year for one table.

Do we want to help Greg & Mark by promoting an event?

If I get 50 people to commit now, we will proceed. I will need to know in the next month or two to make sure we get commitments from all the interested parties.

I will give Corey at least $500 to help out the raised money for a Efren vs. Corey rotation match.

Al,
Very sorry I didn't get to meet you at DCC, hope you had a great time.

When I asked Efren about potential opponents who could give him a run at rotation; Corey was one of several names that he mentioned. As Pat F. definitely wants a top player, Corey would certainly qualify.

Our plan was to start a thread soon about who the forum would like to see play Efren in rotation (since we are providing the prize, we have some definite say-so in picking the opponent). I personally think Corey would be a GREAT choice if you think he might be interested (and of course your offer is MOST generous). I'll start a thread this weekend, as I feel certain that we can make this happen; it will be interesting to see what other names are mentioned.

Count me in, maybe next year I could associate all of the screen names with their real names. Wouldn't it be great if we could compile a directory of real names of those attending.

DCC this year was the best ever for me, that was because of the AZ/One Pocket room.

Thanks for all the work that you did to make it a reality, also! thanks for including the members of onepocket.org.

Now that I am a member of the AZ forum I will keep in touch more often,

Regards,

John

I had a good time at the DCC. I brought Corey down to the AZ room a couple of times. It was a very nice set up.

I have already talked with Corey and he said he would play, but my $500 dollar offer would only be good if Corey is the one playing.

Just a thought.

Would sending money in way ahead of time be beneficial?
Set up an account and let it earn a little interest over the course of the year. It probably wouldn't make a lot but even a 6 month CD might work well.

WBM, as we PM'd, count me in. I hope to make DCC '07 my first experience....with DCC, that is. :o :p

Al,
I understand. I would think that Corey kind of has the inside track on this. I will be having some discussions with the involved parties this week, we'll run the rotation thread, and it is even conceivable we could decide something in the next few weeks or months. It is attractive to think we could have it set well ahead of time, then spend some time generating interest (the possibility of us charging $5-/$10 for admission to the television table area, has been raised; allowing us some money to defray the cost of things).

I would also LOVE to hear if Corey had any ideas of ways we could make the room more attractive to the top pro's as a place to hang out. Thanks.

I also would like to inform people that I am forming a committee to help with the room this next year. I do NOT want to be in the position of dictator/moderator/controlfreakdude. I think myself, Steve Lomako, and Timberly (if she'll do it....and I mean participate in the committe - get your mind out of the gutter) would be a great combination.
