DCC - Louie Roberts Action & Entertainment Award 2014

A lot of people have posted who was in constant action, but no one has mentioned anything about someone being more entertaining than others. With the entertainment aspect being equal, shouldn't the highest amounts played for be the deciding factor? In that case, I think Brian White wins.

Action Award...DCC

I feel that there is a conflict at the derby as far as the action. We are instructed to handle the action discreetly. So, it's difficult to honor the wishes of the powers that be and simultaneously be very entertaining about the action. That being said; I wasn't even aware of the action involving Brian White. But, in Brian's defense; I wouldn't want to be in that kind of action and try to fade all the circus that the action room can be sometimes. I've known Brian for many years and he is a man of integrity unlike some of the other characters around the game. Additionally, year after year Brian is always patrolling the halls of the action area trying to get something going so although he may may not have been the most entertaining; he is a very deserving candidate of the award. Plus, you don't have to worry about Brian being involved in all the dumping and double steering that seems to happen every year. Also, without kirkus; this big action probably wouldn't happen so he deserves a big shout - out as well. All this being said; my vote goes to Brian White, one of a dying breed of men of integrity in the game. my 2cents.......Randy Vaughn

I think some may not realize the "E" stands for "entertainment" in the Louie Roberts A&E Award.

In other words, if there is high-stakes gambling but no entertainment, that only fills half the selection criteria. If there is entertainment, but no high-stakes gambling, then that only fills half the selection criteria.

That said, what is entertainment to some may not be entertainment to others. There is a conflict or tension in the American pool culture of pool purists versus action enthusiasts. What is entertaining to a pool purist may be like watching paint dry to an action enthusiast, and vice versa. :D

No matter who wins, there will be those who think the awardee is the wrong guy/gal. It happens every year, but one thing to keep in mind is that there can only be one winner.

I did not attend this year's DCC, so I have no idea who should win, but I thought I would just offer the above-referenced words as food for thought to those who may not be familiar with the selection criteria for this annual award.

action versus entertainment

So which do you think is more important overall; action or entertainment? What is entertainment without action? .........woofing of course and this definitely not the woofing award....If it was, deathball would win year after year...lol. Action without a lot of woofing is still entertaining in my opinion. So that being said; if there is not someone who has been entertaining and also been in good action then the award should go to the best action because good action is always entertaining whether there is a lot of woofing or not.

Maybe you could do me a favor, and let the TV stations A&E know that the "A" stands for Arts.

I quit careing when they gave it J. Lee a few years back. So sad.

She was in more action and bet higher than the others.

Almost anytime you stuck your head in the action room, she was there betting it up on both the big table or the bar table with a crowd watching.

That is what the award is all about and IMO she deserved it.

well said.... and add to the fact that the venue is "tolerating" if it is "not in the open" this activity... Those that can pull off Large sets and not get the whole thing shut down should be rewarded....

OR breakout out the woofing, the booze and the hookers and REALLY put on a show...

Yes I agree I should have mentioned Brian too. The only problem for me re: Brian was I didn't see much of his action because it was in Ray's streaming room with the door closed. That might have been "entertaining" for the streaming audience but not for all the rest of the people at DCC not in the room. I did see the replay of the stick smash though.

To go further with this post, the whole idea of the Action & Entertainment award is to reward entertaining action in hopes that it leads to further attendance by action makers (player, backers, etc.) as well as action railbirds , sweaters, and bettors. Greg Sullivan wants to embrace, highlight, encourage, and showcase just how fun and entertaining action can be.

Having action to entertain only the stream was not the original intent of the award. Greg wants people to come to the event. He wants a continued word of mouth from those that got entertained to spread the word. The streams are great, don't get me wrong. They give people who can't attend a great look at the DCC. But stream viewers can't vote.

Quiet action that people at the DCC can't watch and get entertained goes against the award.

This is very spot on. I don't understand how it was allowed that they locked the room and had private action. I would have loved to watch Bart and Josh Roberts playing. Seems a little ridiculous that I went to DCC and paid thousands to attend, and the only way to see something happening 5 feet from me was to buy wifi from the hotel and pay to watch pay per view. If I were Greg, I would not have allowed Ray to do so as it goes against the spirit of the derby.

I do not understand this issue. Jeanette played four or five sets for over $10,000 each. Every time she was in action the place was wall to wall. Everyone bet on both sides of each match. She was in way more action than anyone else that year. Can you and/or the other person who said something about her winning explain the issue.

Maybe SAJ should have gotten the award that year! She also quit a set half way through against Richie Richeson that she THOUGHT was a lock.

I know I bet on several of her matches including that one!! They were supposed to play it out and not pro-rate but guess what!!!

They saved themselves some money when she quit!! They pro-rated!!

All her matches were drama filled Diva type stuff...not my cup of tea for sure as I'm not star struck in the least!

edit to Add: I voted for Jason Kirkus for this award this year. He staked some big games! I know the award is meant to be a player but the stakehorse deserves credit to for making these games happen!!

Also (and no offense to anyone) I will get flamed for this but this is just my opinion. The award has seen a drop in player pedigree since moving to the casino. TOP pros used to be in the running for award but it's more second tier now. There are simply too many events for the PROS to compete in leaving no time to gamble. While the addition of the Bigfoot has been popular with many, it's diluting the gambling among the elite!!!! And this is something I feared would happen from the beginning. The up and comers are the ones who are gambling more than anyone.
